I think there's an argument to be made that classical Greeks looked down on the archer compared to the hoplite; there's a distinct feel that when Paris took out Achilles, Achilles fell to someone not quite worthy of the honor. Still, there's nothing that suggests the bow was considered feminine.
There's Arjuna the "peerless archer" from Mahabharata, who spent some time either as a woman or posing as a woman, but Bob certainly isn't that literate.
