I get that individual states have had less meaning in a post-Civil War world and that the federal government continues to extend its reach further into states' territory, but the Electoral College was created because we're a union of now 50 states, and the Founders wanted to be sure that a President would be elected by a majority of the states, not a majority of the people. Because each state is different, the chief executive of the nation should be someone that appeals to a broad swath of the country, not just a few metropolises with huge populations. Down that road lies tyranny of the majority, something that the Founders explicitly set out to prevent, or at least make more difficult.
