I think that's just a shitpost. There's no reason that would cause food poisoning. There's nothing wrong with the general concept, although of gimmick marinades my preference is pickle juice (like Chick-Fil-A uses) or buttermilk. Using soda is pretty white trash.

Using soda for poultry is dumb. But using Coke as the poaching liquid for a big-ass ham is pretty bomb. Throw a few cloves and a halved onion in and let it bubble away. Once you’ve removed the ham, discard the cloves and onion halves but save the cooking liquid — it makes a great base for black bean soup.

See, these recipes can sound like a joke, I don’t mind. The rule is they just can’t taste like a joke. Bob’s no doubt tasted like a joke at best, but more likely like death.
