It was cancelled halfway through the first season. Fox intended for it to fail - it was too expensive to bother with and it was only offered to Whedon to get him to do more seasons of Buffy and Angel. The movie resolves some of the intended plot lines, but they couldn't do all of them so they had to kill some of them, like Book's past. It kind of works the way they did it because you enough get hints of who he was to still keep the character interesting.
The problem was that people started to watch it, even though they put it in a shitty time slot, in the same way that people had started to watch the live action Tick. Both shows were put into worse and worse slots until Fox could justify canceling them. I think after the first half dozen episodes they were on at 12:00 and 12:30AM eastern (on Wednesday, IIRC) . They let the Tick wrap up, but they didn't even air 4 finished episodes of Firefly and somewhere around a third of the season was never even filmed. I never understood this, a western in space was something that should have done well.
Fox did a lot of wierd, unexplained shit like that - get shows and intentionally torpedo them. They did it with Doctor Who - Paul McGann's doctor (the 8th) was a joint thing between the BBC and Fox, bringing the series back after it had been off the air for a few years. Fox aired the intro episode against the Super Bowl, obviously got bad ratings, and cancelled it immediately. It did really well in the UK, but Fox is Fox. They were rolling in money from The Simpsons and Married With Children which were both at their peak so I guess there was no reason for sane decisions.

I don't know if I want to bite the bulled and watch old escapist episodes where Bob was the third guy with AIDSmoby and Literally Who. I was morbidly curious to read the comments on the video immediately after his firing but all of the comment section kept saying that the show needed MovieBob's insight to bounce ideas against. That is pure lunacy. I can't imagine a scenario where Bob has anything meaningful to add to a conversation.
I'm playing devil's advocate but "Kill all gentiles" has been a thing since the 1920's and you can find people with enough rethoric to make you go for the nearest bridge. When Bob tries to campaign to kill the Midwest even the Black Israelites start to rethink their position. He is that bad at public discourse which is why I refuse to believe he can do a show with other people and bring anything to the table.

From what Bob have said (take it with a grain of salt) his dad was a blue collered republican who watched Fox News.
