The fact that RWBY's power system is at this point no more than fucking Calvinball with inconsistencies, doesn't surprise me at all.

Aura and Semblance have been poorly explained ever since, with this only making the latter seem even more messy compared to Basic Bitch Shonens where they at least can be consistent;while RWBY just tacks on more shit that doesn't add anything new or logical.

Maidens are no different from a Huntsman with a Semblance, despite this whole spiel of them being forces so much above but still beneath Oz, Salem, and the Gods but it's poorly conveyed to the point where you ask why does anyone want to be one? Magic is useless.

Christ, this show has worse focus than a kid afflicted with ADD hopped up on five bowls of sugary cereal drenched in pop.
Hell, Jojo is more consistent, and that entire manga runs on a power system that replaced a completely different power system.

Even when Jojo forgets an established rule, it's not some world breaking rule, it tends to be some small minutiae.
Even if it somehow is a pretty significant rule that gets broken, Araki is talented enough and has charismatic enough characters that he can pull it off. RWBY, on the other hand... is not so fortunate.

Araki also just goes balls to the wall insane with his power system so you don't give a flying fuck if rules are broken if you can even notice at all. Rwby is so bland and mediocre that when a "rule" is broken its really obvious and your brain latches onto it because its the only interesting thing happening.

There’s a simpler reason than that.

Araki makes it very clear
A: When a power is being used
B: What power it is, both by visual tells and naming techniques.

Anime in general is good at this.

One thing that separates semblances from many other anime powers is that Semblances don’t have a name or any sort of universal call out. It’s never clear what’s a semblance, what’s a skill, and what’s some other thing. The only power that works really well is Silver Eyes, because it has a name, it’s got an extremely clear tell, and it has a defined use and limits.

So, at RTX they gave character birthdays for all of Team RWBY. CDC0D627-4D58-4EF8-9C25-75871C582813.jpeg 093D119B-5EB4-4DC5-AE36-690F5D0B851B.jpeg
