I think that every volume you could name something he goes through.
Let’s see…

  • Vol 1: Being severely weak compared to everyone else, faked papers, heavily bullied and blackmailed.
  • Vol 2: Rejected by love interest and eventually helps rival get with said love interest
  • Vol 3: Unable to help/save Pyrrha because he doesn’t know what’s going on
  • Vol 4: Survivor’s guilt/depression at the death of his partner
  • Vol 5: Faced with his partner’s killer, is still unable to actually do anything, misses the one good chance he had to take her out, made to watch someone else close to him “die”, unlocks Semblance which ironically could have saved Pyrrha had he unlocked it sooner.
  • Vol 6: made peace with Pyrrha’s death and finally able to get out of his depression.
  • I didn’t see Vol 7 or 8, but I know he was essentially forced to mercy-kill Penny to protect the maiden power.
And I guess in Vol 9: brainwashed into a wonderland knight. Possibly has to face his friends finding out he killed Penny, then not initially understanding why.

Penny killing was in 8. V7 had Jaune being approached by a bunch of moms apparently.

RWBY would have been a better comedy show than an action-fantasy.
The lighter tones of V1/2 were pretty much ideal and where the show should have stayed. It could have stood to have a bit more of an edge in regards to elements at work within the setting, but the show really started to fall apart when it pivoted into serious drama around V4/5.

A more serious tone would have perhaps been better overall with actual writers behind the wheel, but M/K decided that the only way to shift into grimdark mode was to sand off every trait that made the heroes appealing in the first place. Now we've just got a bland kitchen soup of vaguely sad anime girls written like one bad character instead of four.

So I have lurked on this and the Rooster Tooth thread as I used to be into RvB And wanted to see how god awful RT has fallen. So I just decided to give RWBY a shot as I have seen people discussing how awful it is as I had a morbid curiosity. I am on the first season/volume so I havent gotten to the lesbian/ultra woke parts yet.

I hate Ruby as she’s just annoying as fuck and Monty’s waifu. Plus I have a feeling she has some Rey from Star Wars ”I am flawless” character about her. Her sister is clearly just there for weeb waifu eye candy. Blake is the “loner Waifu“ character that weebs love. Weiss I am intrigued by her story as she seems to be the only interesting one out of that group.

I like Jaune so far of course I haven’t gotten to some parts that others in the thread has mentioned. Pyrrha is best girl(I know she dies) and if RWBY was centered on her rather than RWBY that could have made the series much better. Perhaps seeing her have a fall from grace and redemption or Jaune screws up so bad that it affects Pyrrha’s reputation that they have to fix, etc. I also like that JNPR is based on mythology whereas RWBY is just Monty and crews waifus.

These are just my initial impressions as I just started. I like the schlock so far as it’s fine. However, I know it’s going to get a lot worse, but I do not know when.
