Yeah, I’m gonna need some citations for that, especially considering that this is RWBY, a show that has no consistency.
I mean it
can work, but there's a lot of inconsistencies in the show that hint otherwise.
Here's some points that support the argument of them being in an abusive romantic relationship:
- In the Adam character short, you can argue that he was abusing her early on through gaslighting, but it doesn't mean "that's an abusive romantic relationship". It's an abusive relationship, whether it be a mentor-apprentice one or just as co-workers, but I don't think there was really a romantic side to it.
- During the fall of Beacon, Adam refers to Blake as "my love" which can be taken as "they were in a romantic relationship", but can also be interpreted differently (eg. one-sided love, obsession, etc.)
- In Volume 6, I think Adam spends a good chunk of his time stalking Blake and trying to get a good opportunity to attack her. During the fight, we can kind of see implications that they were in a romantic relationship through the dialogue.
However, those arguments can work in the context of them being in another relationship, like a mentor-apprentice one. The first one already goes without speaking, second one can be seen as Adam being obsessed with Blake as she's been the (only?) one that always stuck by his side, third one can be seen as a revenge scenario of why did Blake betray Adam and the White Fang as a whole.
The inconsistent parts:
- The Black trailer doesn't really hint at them being in a romantic relationship. Granted, this was released when the show was in the early stages of production so it probably doesn't mean much.
- I believe in Volume 4/5, Blake refers to Adam as 'spite'. She doesn't talk about him as an abusive person or what shit she's been through, she just talks about how her perception of him changes as she spent more time with him - that his ideals and perception of humans lead him to use more violent methods. There weren't really any implications of a romantic relationship happening between the two. Please correct me if I'm wrong about this.
- If Adam was that possessive of Blake, why didn't he take more action to get her back? If he couldn't go find Blake himself, he could always tell his subordinates to keep an eye out for Blake (or just bring her back to him).
- Volume 2 was about going after the White Fang and trying to catch Torchwick and the other baddies. Blake was the main driving force behind the whole operation (?) to the point that her teammates had to tell her to chill out and relax. Blake knows that Adam is one of the leaders of the White Fang, so the possibility of encountering him is there. If Blake and Adam were in an abusive relationship (doesn't even have to be romantic), wouldn't Blake be more careful and hesitant about going in?
