So disks can be damaged by being read too hard/much?

Never would have thought. Learn new things every day.
Hard drives used to be so big and heavy that the right access pattern could cause a reader head to physically slam into the side of its housing, potentially causing damage, cabinet movement and (if done deliberately) really funny hard drive races across data lab floors, which for legal reasons I won't admit I've ever personally witnessed or been a part of at a company with a name similar to MBI.

And yeah, it can seriously damage the platters and/or heads. We never held those cabinet races (which of course never happened) until a disk was confirmed unsalvageable. MBI was a real stickler for using hardware until it died, but rarely cared what happened to the corpse.

Also, that shit's hilarious. There is something surreal about watching a program running on an ancient AS/400 mainframe drive a pair of washing machine-sized hard drives across a raised floor lab an inch at a time while the engineers and techs placed bets on which unit would reach the finish line first. Or so I've heard.

So disks can be damaged by being read too hard/much?
On very rare occasions, yes. The early 360 machines were shit; prone to overheating (RROD) and damaging themselves.
This won't happen with regular play though. Remember you are forcing the game to do things it is not meant to do and look for data that's not there. Pair that with the early 360's prone tendency to infinite looping (as opposed to the PS3 that just likes to take a big fat shit and die when it starts getting the slightest memory overload) which causes overheating and rather than crash and shut down still wants to continue it's fruitless task until it physically can't.
The discs get damaged by the 360's faulty parts + constant reading by said parts that keeps grinding and wearing out the poly-carbonate disc, which is why I said that looking for 'The Freezer' once or twice won't cause your disc to be useless. But constant "hunting" will, as you're making constant and fast contact between the disc and drive.

It's always fascinated me.

trying to upload downloaded music to Saints Row 1 on Series S. from what i gather you have to have the files on your machine and then theyll appear in the category "Downloaded" in the Scratch That store. what i did was with a usb and VLC UWP and transfered songs onto my series S, then created a playlist of them on that app. Now im trying to get these tracks to appear in the Scratch That, but it's not working. what step am i missing? is it even possible via the backwards compatible version of SR!?

Emulation is still using the original 360 operating system, it can't see your Xbox Series S. I don't think there is a way to move music to the emulated OS.
You can however just play music using the Series S guide UI, but I know that's not as good.

Yup! Though the gear itself is much smaller and faster these days and the OS continues to improve (and is still actively developed and supported), it's the same "ecosystem" that's been around since the first System/360 (heh) appeared in the 60's. They're esoteric, fucking expensive to acquire and maintain (you can't really "buy" them, at least from IBM; you have to lease them), and still usually require "dinosaur pens" (raised floor data center environments with active air filtering and cooling, and redundant power) to operate, but for the niches they fill, they're unbeatable. And they do now make smaller versions of them about the size of a dorm room refrigerator that can live in an office instead of a raised floor. Retailers tend to go for those models now.

Incredible machines. Reliable as hell, too. They're self-healing and self-monitoring, and will phone home for help if some piece of hardware is failing. Processes and data can be seamlessly transferred from one CPU, memory module or disk to another transparently (without anybody noticing and without interruption), so when something breaks, you won't even notice. The typical mainframe experience as a customer is "it's working fine, oh hey an IBM service guy just showed up, swapped out a part, and left again, also the mainframe's still working fine so who knows what he actually did."

But yeah, a lot of retailers use them on the backend because the basics of inventory control and logistics haven't really changed all that much since that software was written (and it still gets updated anyway to keep up with the times) and there's nothing better out there that meets those needs. The most impressive thing about mainframes to me is the fact that you can load up a software package from 1970 (assuming you still have a copy) onto a brand new modern mainframe and it'll still run the original binary unmodified and it'll work just fine. Retailers love that too.

AS/400/OS/400/IBM i on POWER is a midrange system that is not the same thing as System/360/370/390/ES9k/zSeries mainframes.

Having said that each line has very nice backwards compatibility within its own range, yes.

Saints Row 2 is being revived. Again. Another modder by the name of Uzi made Rejuiced, which is a hooked .dll file to the GOG executable that supposedly fixes bugs. Compatable with Gentlemen of the Row and is planning on a proper mod in Reloaded.
Juiced supposedly unties the physics from the framerate. I haven't checked it but people are saying the game runs smoother now with the patch.

Currently trying to 100% SR1, the fucking LVL 8 Drug Trafficking activities are giving me the most trouble. Vice Kings one was so easy I barely even remember doing it but the other two are difficult thanks to A) 5 star police and 5 gang notoriety and B) the LC one has guys with fucking RPGs jumping out of cars. The latter seems like it'd be easy if I can get the glitch where all of the pursuing gangmembers spawn in trucks, no RPG guys that way, but if I get the glitch I end up dying in some other stupid way. Everybody talks about how hard Hitman is but I had no trouble at all with it, it's all RNG essentially whether or not the target spawns and I just happened to get lucky one night.

The worst part of hitman is when you're doing something else and a target spawns in a completely different area than it says they will when you don't have the weapon you're supposed to kill them with.

Another fun fact I learned is that some of the pedestrian models for the Hitman targets don't actually even spawn in the location it tells you to look for them in, rendering the activity almost impossible to complete unless you look up a guide. Forget which target it is, but the ped model for said target is a woman who is roller-blading and that model 100% does not spawn in the location they tell you to look in according to people who've used an emulator and datamined game files.

I did finally beat the LC Drug Trafficking LVL 8 last night but only after about ten attempts and even then just by the skin of my teeth. Van got blown up basically right at the end where you reach the dealer's home area and I had the infinite sprint unlock from all of the tags so I just hauled ass on foot the rest of the way there while almost dead, thankfully the follower AI is pretty decent and the drug dealer guy stuck with me. Basically the strat is quit/restart the activity if you don't have the .44 Shepherd in your pistol slot because it is damn near impossible otherwise and furthermore you're going to want to try and get the glitch where the LC pursuers only spawn in the truck, believe it's called the 'Betsy'. RPG guys do still spawn when this glitch occurs, which I discovered last night, but each vehicle only has two seats and is much slower so the RPG guys are less likely to spawn and you'll likely be able to pick them off before they can get a shot off with it. Also when you hit stop 3 there will ALWAYS be a group of LCs waiting to tear the dealer's shit up so you want to deal with them fast. I have no idea what causes the LC truck only glitch but it seems to happen if you restart/quit the activity many times in a row and helps if there's already an LC truck nearby, it's like the game won't load other LC cars into memory if one is nearby or something like that but I'm playing on Xbone so I can't exactly data mine to see what causes it.

Now I just have to finish LVL 7 and 8 of the Rollers/Suburbs Drug Trafficking which is hard as fuck too, think I might just have to hit Forgive & Forget along the route a few times. These activities are the ones giving me the most trouble though. People talk about how hard Escort is but I completed all of them and the only difficult one was the Vice Kings one because I kept getting a fucking glitch where the girl would jump out of the car and I'd be stuck. Sometimes level 8 Snatch is a pain in the ass but if you get and save the FBI SUV beforehand it makes it a bit easier, it's the only vehicle I know of that has high hitpoints, high speed and has four seats. Also having the platinum weapons from Hitman unlocked helps a lot, the platinum Tec-9 clone fucks their shit up real quick. After the last Drug Trafficking everything should be smooth sailing aside from the endgame missions. Mayhem is easy as shit if you just hit fences/light poles and patio chairs, Insurance Fraud is trivial if you get a police car and keep crashing into shit and fly through the windshield.

I'm replaying Saints Row 1 when somebody offered to help with some multiplayer achievements.

I already beat Saints Row 1 (not 2), maybe it's worth a replay for the activities. I heard SR1 is the hardest of the series with how difficult the activities can be in higher levels.

That's 100% correct in my experience, I don't remember jack shit from Saints Row 2 [or three but three was piss easy] that was even half as difficult as SR1's LVL 8 Drug Trafficking activity. I'm going to try and 100% SR2 next so I'll see directly if anything in that game is as difficult or more difficult than the activities in SR1. I finally beat both of the hard ones but only by immediately sprinting to Forgive & Forget on a couple stops and going to the mechanic's shop to retrieve the armored truck I got from doing Chop Shop, then had to very quickly steal a couple FBI SUVs too if even hoping to survive because they're just constantly dumping bullets into your car and ramming it, I think even the armored truck [with 15,000 HP] only lasted one stop. I believe I went through five separate vehicles on the run I finally beat it, all of which were vehicles with pretty high hitpoints. Even with all of those strategies you still have to be on your A-game about hitting the drivers of the cars pursuing you because there's no way you'll make it.

Now I'm mopping up the races and they're not too bad, hard in an RNG way where sometimes the physics just decide to flip your car over or send it flying through the air, or you'll get unlucky with a civilian car spawn and go into it head-on. The NPC opponents in the races are also little shits and I suspect the weight of their cars is tuned up to some ridiculously high level because we're all in the same car type [by the nature of the activity, the opponents' cars are determined by the car you use] and these supercars are extremely light and floaty but they'll mildly nudge me and I go spinning but if I hit them it doesn't do shit. Had one spin me right before the finish line on a race I'd already tried like six times. Little bastards.

Snatch is pretty easy if you save the FBI car and use it, or there's a bug you can use [which I tested and it does work] involving glitching a Taxi by blowing it up and you get a Taxi that is technically not a drivable vehicle so it's invulnerable to damage. Insurance Fraud is easy if you just keep hitting shit in a cop car and flying through the windshield. Mayhem, look for fences and patio chairs/tables. Drug Trafficking though? You basically just have to get good and get lucky in that you can quickly switch vehicles and the NPC driving you won't fucking get stuck somewhere. The first few levels of each one lull you into this false sense of "wow this is gonna be easy" and then LVL 7 and LVL 8 just absolutely tear your ass apart. Escort's not too bad either once you realize you can't necessarily outrun the news vans and focus on being elusive and making sharp turns.

I've never heard of discs getting damaged by just being read, but earlier models of the 360 had those DVD drives that'd grind a circle in the disc and destroy it if you rotated the system, sooooooooooooo maybe those drives are just really that bad?
They'd eventually do that due to the motor wearing out and being unable to spin at full speed even if you never moved the system, and MS being too cheap to put spacers in the tray to protect the discs. Xbox hardware is always that bad.

Finally finished my 100% run of the original Saints Row. Overall, still a great game though the main story is WAY shorter than I remember it being, or maybe it just took me forever to beat it when I was like 13 because I sucked. Really a great throwback to a time when game devs knew what the fuck they were doing and weren't pissing themselves at the prospect of potentially making someone mad. Only real complaints I have are some of the bugs and the radio stations are rather repetitive, with very few tracks on each station and many of the stations feel pretty 'samey' to me. Chief complaint is the lack of checkpoints, although this was extremely common at the time. Failing a mission and having to drive ALL THE WAY BACK to get a second shot at it is a real pain in the ass but, like I said, this wasn't rare or unique at the time and most games from that era had this problem. Also during the story missions, character voice lines would sometimes either play extremely fast, one after the other, or they'd play all at once overlapped on one another. I don't know if some of these bugs are the result of playing the game with backwards compatibility on the Xbox One or not, but for the most part the game ran fine with some occasional bugs or framerate chugging, but I know for a fact that the latter was still an issue on the original 360 hardware.

Some of the final story missions can be annoying, especially the Los Carnales one where you have to blow up the plane before it can take off, but once you find out where the fucking RPG guys spawn and the fact that they all have explosive barrels next to them, it's pretty easy. People said they had a lot of trouble with the last Rollers mission and the last Vice Kings mission but I didn't find them terribly difficult, maybe because I had the unlocked weapons from Hitman which are OP as fuck and I highly recommend unlocking them first before you start the story or try any of the harder Drug Trafficking or Snatch activities, they make shit way fucking easier.

Will be trying to 100% SR2 next and I'll see if it's as fucking difficult as the first game, I doubt it is and I don't remember it being all that hard when I originally played it. Might play Doom 2016 first though. It was nice playing through a game, after a slog of modern titles, where you could tell the devs gave a shit about their product and wanted for people to have a good time playing it. You can tell that the dev team had to cut a few corners here and there and were somewhat still learning what worked and what didn't in an open world, but essentially SR2 was just but with everything tuned up to 11 and SR1 was the building block, with SR2 being undoubtedly the best game in the series.

Here's a guide I wrote up on the hardest activities, if anyone cares:

SR1 ACTIVITY DIFFICULTY RATINGS [top most difficult]

Drug Trafficking - 1
Racing - 2
Snatch - 3
Escort - 4
Hitman - 5
Hijacking - 6
Tagging - 7
Chop Shop - 8
Mayhem - 9
Insurance Fraud - 10
CD Collection - 11
Demolition Derby - 12

Guide for the hardest activities [other than Racing because you just have to have a really fast car like the Attraizone and you need to get really good at driving, nitrous helps also.]

Drug Trafficking is by far the most difficult activity and LVL 6 through LVL 8 of these activities [excluding Vice Kings] are near impossible without exploiting various game mechanics or bugs. Judicious use of Forgive and Forget and picking up heavily armored vehicles at Rim Jobs garages are necessary to beat these. If you get close to the dealer's home base and your vehicle is damaged, you might be better off jumping out and sprinting to the blue marker. The weapon rewards from the Hitman activities don't really help with these activities because the weapons are randomly selected on activity start. The Titan [which I believe you unlock from Hijacking or you can just save a random spawned one] or the FBI SUV are going to be your best bet in terms of vehicles unless you can find a semi really quick.

Los Carnales Drug Trafficking LVL 6 through 8 guide:
This is hands down the most difficult one to complete without abusing various bugs and mechanics due to how many RPG wielding gangmembers spawn. The best method to beat it is to continually start the activity and if you do NOT have the .44 Shepherd revolver in your weapon wheel, instantly cancel the activity and restart. Additionally there is an exploit where LC pursuers will only spawn in the classic pickup trucks they drive, which are better for 2 reasons: Reason one is, they have less seats, ergo less gangmembers will get out of them at your stops and you are less likely to get RPG pursuers. Reason two is that the trucks are slower and less maneuverable than the typical LC cars which spawn, making the LCs less of a threat when pursuing you. I have been unable to ascertain why or how this truck glitch happens but if you continually restart the activity, you will eventually get this glitch. Essentially to make it easier, you want both random chances to line up, the .44 Shepherd in your inventory and the truck glitch. These lining up give you the best chance to beat these activity levels. Even with these exploits/bugs it will still be extremely difficult as RPGs can come out of nowhere and wreck you in one hit, so you will likely still need to use Forgive and Forget and pick up new vehicles [with high HP] at Rim Jobs. Check the map to see which drug stops are closeish to Forgive and Forgets and after the deal is complete, run [on foot] to the nearest F&F, the dealer will mostly keep up with you. It helps a LOT if you have infinite sprint for completing the Tagging activity. Try to keep the initial van that you get undamaged as possible for as long as possible, but once it is smoking, abandon it and run to the nearest Rim Jobs and get the Titan or an FBI SUV, save these prior to starting. They have the best HP of most suitable vehicles which can be saved. Without the .44 Shepherd in your weapon wheel, which is random on activity start, it will still be an uphill battle with all of these tips. You'll need full health items, "The Fist" from Freckle Bitch's is best. I basically only beat this one by the skin of my teeth, dealer was driving back to home base and our third or fourth FBI car was fucked, started flaming from taking too much damage and I just happened to be close enough that I could just sprint there and thankfully the dumb AI kept up and didn't get downed or stuck. Survived with just a sliver of health left too, this one was a total bitch.

Vice Kings Drug Trafficking Guide:
This one is actually fairly easy but the tips above will help you out with this one as well if you're having trouble, as far as I know the VKs almost never spawn with RPGs so you don't need to worry about that.

Westside Rollerz Drug Trafficking Guide:
Same as the LC guide, use the tips found in that guide but also be aware that in LVL 7-8 of this activity, there is a crazy long highway stretch to return back to the dealer's next stop and their home so be ready to switch vehicles A LOT. Infinite sprint helps here too so you can jump into your next vehicle. As a rule of thumb, the second your vehicle starts showing white smoke/steam, jump out and switch because while there is still HP remaining, in the higher levels of these DT activities the remaining HP will be gone extremely quickly and if your car catches fire at speed, it is very likely you'll die when you jump out or get run over by a pursuing vehicle.

Snatch Guide:
Essentially you're going to need a maneuverable four-door vehicle with good HP to beat these and it definitely helps if you have the weapon rewards from beating the Hitman activity. There is an exploit you can use to make these extremely easy. Call a taxi-cab from your phone menu and stand on the roof of it. Then, drop a grenade on the roof and immediately hit Y to get inside the cab, as it begins to drive away the taxi-cab will explode and the driver will get out. You can then exit the cab's destroyed wreck and get into the driver's seat. Since this vehicle is technically destroyed, it will take absolutely no damage from explosions, bullets or collisions and it's a decently fast four-door car for Snatch.

Racing Guide:
All I can say for this one is to get really good with the driving mechanics and get a fast car that handles very well, Attraizone is the one I used and the nitrous upgrade definitely helps.

Escort Guide:
The trick to this one is to focus on being elusive rather than trying to outrun the pursuing news vans or enemies, make as many sharp turns as possible, try to get the pursuers to crash into solid objects or other vehicles, run through parking lots and alleyways and other shortcuts. Generally speaking if you can stay on a wider/longer road you'll be able to outrun many of the pursuers but you still want to be elusive.

Insurance Fraud Guide:
Get a police car or an ambulance and repeatedly crash into other vehicles at high speed, you will be thrown through the windshield and launched out and in many cases, due to the 'civic vehicle bonus' you will very likely complete many of these levels with a single crash. This is definitely the most fun activity other than Mayhem, if you want to do it legit, go to a straight street and look for the cars which are speeding and weaving in and out of traffic or going around slower cars. You can get quite a high score just diving in front of these vehicles.

Mayhem Guide:
Fences. Run over fences with a car or shoot them with a weapon if you get bonus cash for doing so. It also works to just continuously run over lamp posts, mail boxes, benches, parking meters, traffic lights, etc. If you get a bonus for civilians you can just drive down the sidewalk repeatedly and it should be done quick.

Hitman Guide:
Some of these character models do not spawn in the area where the Hitman target list/menu says they do, so it can be extremely frustrating without looking up a guide. If you don't look up a guide, there's almost no way you'll be able to find most of these people given that they don't actually spawn. Roxanne does not spawn in the Apartments District, it's easier to find her in the High End Retail or Museum Districts. Juan also does not spawn in the Apartments District, and is often found in the Museum District. Tina does not spawn in the Barrio District and will often be found in Museum or Huntersfield. Many of the targets spawn in specific vehicles, if their outfit in the image looks like an ambulance driver, a meter maid, etc. it is extremely likely you will find them in their respective vehicles.

Tags are WAY harder to find than the CDs but both can be annoying especially if you don't keep track of which ones you've already gotten, thus necessitating you driving back and forth to every spot on the map once again.

I gave up on trying to unlock the 'secret stash' which is more of a easter egg and it doesn't count towards 100% completion, entering the safe code in reverse was just too fiddly and retarded for me.

the Los Carnales
Dex:"It's not the Los Carnales. It's just Los Carnales. Los means-ah, fuck it."

It's been years since I did a proper playthrough of SR1 but the Carnales final mission was always the hardest to me. I think part of that is the lack of checkpoints like you mentioned. Failing and having to do the drive all the way back to the airport, multiple times, gets pretty demoralizing. It felt so damn good when I finally blew up his plane though.

Yeah, the Carnales mission is the hardest just by dint of you having a small window in blowing up that plane. The others might be harder, but it's less punishing due to how they're constructed.

Guys, I'm having some kind of weird Mandela Effect here. There's a song that I'm absolutely sure that was in either Saint's Row 2 or 3. I don't know the band or (apparently) the title. I don't remember much about it, but it was a sort of hard rock song and the chorus went something like this:

Tick-tock and don't stop rockin' to the bang bang boogie
You don't stop rockin'
And even if the crowd gets out of pocket to the bang bang boogie
You don't stop rockin'

I cannot find any reference to this song ANYWHERE. The first line sounds similar to something in Rapper's Delight, but that song isn't in Saint's Row, the second line doesn't match, and the music doesn't sound right. Maybe it's a tribute or remix or something though? There are a couple more recent rap songs called Bang Bang Boogie, but those aren't it either. I haven't gone line by line and listened to every song in the sound tracks, but I've looked them over and nothing looks similar.

Does anybody remember this or was it some kind of weird fever dream?

I forget the name of the song myself, but I do distinctively remember that song existing in Scarface The World is Yours. I suppose you could go through the soundtracks to SR2/3 and cross reference them with Scarface's soundtrack because it's definitely in the latter. God knows I heard it enough times while doing distribution.
