SAW X - This time, it's personal.

I'll probably see this since I've seen all the films except for Spiral (just keep forgetting to watch it). Seems interesting in concept where Jigsaw doesn't hide from the game this time since it's way too personal, but it does seem odd regarding the already weird timeline in the series. Also, how many fucking factories does this city have for the cops to never find the games before it's too late?

I mean, this a literal zodiac killer we're dealing with. Any Jigsaw killer can be more of an imposter, yet nobody would know until it's too late.

Same tbh. Like, there’s s legit discussion to have about the Saw series and its merit besides faggot saying ‘Only the first one was good’, which is the generic reply they say about every single fucking horror series and its boring.
I can think of a few franchises where the sequels were better than the original:

Friday the 13th (part 4, also a lot of people love part 6)*
Nightmare on Elm Street (most fans go with either part 3 or 4 as the best)
Leprechaun (not a prestigious franchise but I think this counts)
Evil Dead trilogy (everyone has a favorite)
Alien (debatable)
Child's Play/Chucky (most people like part 2 or Bride more with Cult of Chucky very close behind)
Puppet Master (parts 3, 4, and even 5 are easily better than the 1st)
Phantasm (also debatable)
The Purge (part 2 being miles better than the 1st movie)
Wolf Creek (sequel BLOWS THE FUCK out of the original and keep in mind that the original was good)
Final Destination (most go with part 2)
George Romero's Dead Trilogy (everyone has a favorite and mine is Day of the Dead)

Unpopular opinion: Halloween 2 is better than the original and Season of the Witch is the best of the franchise.

Another unpopular opinion: Sleepaway Camp 2 is better than the first movie.

And of course, Internet Boomer Criminal loves the Hotel Transylvania sequels more than the original.

*Edit: Friday the 13th might be an example where nearly all of the sequels are better than the original. I would watch virtually any of the movies excluding part 8 and Jason X over the original. And that includes the remake which I really enjoy.

I like this franchise, it's very dumb and overly convoluted but fun.
I haven't seen Spiral yet but out of the other ones, 5 is the weakest one.
There's also the problem where the hero and villain look exactly the same in 5 and I legit sometimes had problems with figuring out which one is which.
1 and 6 are the best ones for entirely different reasons.

I think the biggest mistake they made is killing off Jigsaw in 3.
After that, they were like: "OK.... what do we do now?" and they decided on flashbacks when the easier solution would be that he tricked everyone and the body was some other guy or it was his twin brother or some other bullshit excuse, nobody would mind.

2nd biggest mistake is that the original plan for part 7 was that it was going to be a 2 parter but they just stopped after 7 because Paranormal Activity was doing better or some other nonsensical reason.
It's sad that we never got a real conclusion to the insanity and it all ended on a cliffhanger.

I hope the new one is retarded and fun.

people still care about Saw after Saw 3?
Or what about that shitty spin-off Spiral? I cannot believe this series has endured for basically 20 YEARS.

I remember being a teenager in 2005 and watching the first two and thinking how awesome they were (granted I was 15).

I maintain the first one at least is still a decent B-Grade horror/crime thriller but they got worse and worse every year.

Personally I would add Hellraiser II to the list. I really love what Atkins built on foundations laid by Barker in terms of mythology.
As for Saw - if the story is convoluted enough and they somehow squeeze another outlandish twist there - I'm game.

Funny, I was going to mention Hellbound but most fans would agree that it's equally as good and see 1 and 2 as one long movie.

Alright I won't lie, I could see that.
A plot I thought about then, probably cliche as shit. The original Jigsaw dies and arrives into the Hellraiser weird hell dimension. He meets the Cenobites and is told that he did so well he gets to be the arbiter of who gets tortured forever and who gets reborn.
Jigsaw does his normal modus operandi but progressively gets grander and more malevolent, with him physically changing to look more like a cenobite. Eventually he makes his greatest contraption, a puzzle cube, each part razor sharp. He gives his next victim, a young woman, to be the first to try it and she fails in it, Jigsaw happily tells her she will be punished forever since that failure obviously means she doesn't repent on her past actions.
Immediately afterwards Pinhead comes to Jigsaw, he informs him that he did a great work and that he was surprised how ruthless he was, after all, his last victim was his wife.

On that realization Jigsaw collapses and screams at Pinhead and curses him. Pinhead fires back how he was overjoyed at inflicting suffering, and as punishment for his bitterness he will now spend eternity in the hell dimension, alone only with the cube and the knowledge that his wife's soul is damned because of him.

The End.

The /tv/ meme of arguing that Jigsaw would not be convicted because he didn't murder anyone in the most literal sense is way more fun. I wish Hollywood would just steal it and make a 2 hour court drama. I imagine the Saw Legal Thriller ending with the Jury finding him not guilty, the prosecutor freaking out and realizing that each jury member was kidnapped by Jigsaw but won the traps and through the lovably insane SAW mythology came out loving and respecting Jigsaw for making them better people.

I've seen Saw being comparable to something like Se7en, and watching it, I understand the comparison. But Se7en wasn't a horror movie as it was also a psychological crime thriller.

@BrunoMattei Yes, I deserved that and more. My post here is dumb.

I'd say FD is that one in a million franchise where 5th installment is the best one somehow
For me, it's the second best as it's a return to form since the second film. The third film had some drama, but it was a bit more tongue-in-cheek. The fourth film, however, was embracing the idea of its over-the-top death scenes that it somehow acts like a slapstick cartoon similar to that of either Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry or SpongeBob.
The Purge (part 2 being miles better than the 1st movie)
I'd say the third one is the best of the Purge franchise

How are these movies still getting greenlit?
Paranormal Activity and Final Destination already repeated the horror movie trope Saw established of getting hyped, doing gangbusters at the box office, and then slowly failing yet somehow Saw is still trucking on. Tobin Bell's like 80 now.

Horror has always been low-risk, high(ish)-reward in terms of money, but Saw movies are especially cheap to make and consistently have done well at the domestic box office so they aren't much of a gamble. Spiral though really shit the bed but you can blame COVID I guess.

Compare:

Final Destination

Plus with horror movies, you can roll the dice and release a cheap movie when nothing else is in theaters and wind-up making a shitload of money on something no one even likes:

Nostalgia. Every big name company wants to inject nostalgia rather than focusing on something original

Anybody ever play the Saw video games?
Some of the worst movie tie in games I've ever seen in my life.
They do have a lot of unintentional comedy though.
Here's an example of some epic voice acting from the menu:
