Scott Pilgrim Netflix Animated Series - Animated by Science SARU

I remember nothing of the original (I've never seen the remakes) except for the cool organic mecha and the obvious fact that it pandered to fucking degenerates. As expected of the dude who did The Secret of Blue Water which was like a Studio Ghibli series written by a paedophile. IIRC the original VHS dubs of Evangelion had "on next episode" voiceovers proclaiming more skin of (underage) girls. It's mildly bewildering to me that it has some mainstream appeal now.
So the voice of the narrator in those was supposed to be promising something that (usually) never happened because fanservice was common and the director Anno was increasingly annoyed with otaku culture. The overarching message of Neon Genesis Evangelion in a nutshell could be summed up in "leave your house, talk to normal people and have sex" but tragically the fan base was too distracted by fighting over who is best girl and has continued doing so for nearly 30 years.

iirc the rebuild scene where shinji jacks off to a comatose asuka and then cries about how much of a fucked up loser he is was supposed to be a shot at the fans who were jacking off to cartoon children

but yeah, the whole point of the anime was "stop being a shut in freak and deal with your problems" but that got completely lost on just about everyone

I don't think there is anyone who literally thinks killing Michael Cena with their time machine gets us to the 2023 Tradwife timeline, it's a funny joke because Ramona Flowers was an early example of the aimless hipster manic pixie dream girl wannabe archetype that realized that women could get a basically inexhaustible amount of male attention from 5-6/10s if they are willing to pretend they like anime, video games and Neutral Milk Hotel.
I don't think WE think that, I understand the meme and I do think it's funny on occasion but I think we've both met enough people in life to know how inexplicably retarded they can be and how literally they've taken that song. I've had to argue with some of them, they explicitly blame that movie for an entire generation of degeneration. It blows my fucking mind how dumb people are.

Yes, "tune in for more fanservice" was at the end of most episodes during the first half in the original version, too. But the only underaged girl who gets sexualized is Asuka, who is already a college graduate by the age of fourteen and looks exactly the same as a 28-year-old in the Rebuild movies.

And before anyone mentions Rei, she isn't a human being.
"It's fine that they show a naked 14 year old because she is mature for her age" and "shes actually a 28 year old in a 14 year old's body" and "Rei isn't a human so its fine"

Average rebuild fan.

ok but what about the "you must fight the aliens" part that seems pretty important too but people fucking ignored that.
Seriously though the rebuild stuff undoing the ending of the original kinda feels cheap to me, it ends with a dire yet hopeful moment that gets undone by the rebuild reveal of "OOP NO SEE IT WAS JUST ONE OF MANY FAILURE LOOPS HAHA" as if it was aping off better groundhog day-esque drama type shit in a way that was cheap and only served to make shit kinda sloppier overall.

Saw an episode. I like the aesthetic of the show, but the animation is jank.

I don't think it was lost on anybody. We just don't care about some little faggot's social anxiety.

Expecting an honest adaptation of the source material is wishful thinking and rare nowadays. It doesn't help that the creator resents the comic because it's a time capsule of his youth and interests while downplaying it due to the negative (XP) attention it received. It's a shame that the fans that were letdown, but I am not surprised that people are eating it up due to Ramona being the focus. Getting the actors back to do the voices seems like a consolation prize.

Well, if we were talking about some novel into live action, yeah, adaptations nowadays seem to diverge from the original material quite a lot, and yes, usually with a political/cultural verge to it.

But Netflix was selling this as a "anime", and Scott Pilgrim was taken as manga by a lot of people back then. And considering that one aspect that anime fans like is that the adaptations from the mangas are pretty much 1-1.

I don't see why they couldn't have done the same thing they have done in Jujutsu Kaisen, keep the story the same but beef up the action scenes to 11. I'm not a reader of that manga nor I did watch the anime, but such is the buzz around that show that it is hard to not notice.

And while I don't think the SP animation is a failure, in a week or two is just going to be "A thing that heppened".

This is really bad if we're resorting to tired talking points about fucking NGE.

"You were already amazing, you just didn't realize it."

This, in and on itself, isn't a bad premise and it's been done properly countless time.

The problem's not a bad premise, the problem's deranged writers.

BenDavid Grabinski

So he's got Early-Lifed by the name. Huh, neat.

Bryan Lee O'Malley is a leaf faggot and everything good about the Scott Pilgrim movie comes from Edgar Wright's directing. This series being written by him just proves it.

Seconds was interesting and started good, even though he, for some reason, insisted on the gayness of a completely ancillary character. Then it got fucking weird. Not David Lynch weird, more like Chris Chan weird.

Did people really want a panel for panel remake

Oh, hell, yes!

with all of the jokes sanitized and cleaned up for modern sensibilities

Oh, hell, no!

I can't say I was all that excited to see this show, because the thing that I find most interesting about Scott Pilgrim is that how much I soured on the comic with the passage of time.

I have soured to it too.

I cannot really put my finger on it, probably is just that I am a more mature individual (ha!) or probably is that I'm much more cynical now (most likely).

Rate me autistic if you want, but Scott Pilgrim is one of the many, many, many media titles that are, ultimately, the offspring of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and tried to cater to the yung'uns with catty, quippy, snarky remarks, and a cast of quirky, brightly colored, attractive individuals living a life that was very much unlike your actual teenage/young adult middle class life.

The reason you are probably hating them all is because they all came true. While all of those predate woke, their mindset and world is woke, and is woke utopia at that. You are now old enough to have seen in person how these characters and circumstances actually play out in real life and you probably have observed it's not, by any means, as wholesome or interesting as it's depicted. In fact, it is quite disgusting a show.

But what I struggle with this is I can't tell if Scott Pilgrim is just a bad story

It is not a good story, but it is not a bad story. It's just a feel good, juvenile story about jerkasses being jerkasses with no real consequences and the occasional hilarity that comes from it.

Like if Looney Tunes had a bastard child with Family Matters, and that bastard child overdosed on Tumblr and Buffy.

or time has made it bad for me with it's irreverent way of storytelling aging like milk.

It's too juvenile for us now and too tame irresponsibly written for younger generations. A group of white jerkasses beating up a lesbian and some POC and gloating about it? The nerve!

why didn't they just follow the comic

Because they'd be burned at the stake, probably, if they replicated some of the shit that went on the original comics.

And because Netflix just can not do propaganda. They'd manage to turn fucking Peppa Pig political.

Because they wanted to make a redemption arc to Ramona Flowers

Ramona Flowers, bear in mind, is heavily based off BLOM's real life wife, and he's an autistic, liberal, terminally online, leaf-asian weaboo nice guy. Guy literally is cursed.

He simped his way to a slutty white hipster reject girl and he is going to declare jihad on anybody who doesn't worship her. Up to and including his own self-insert.

Michael Cena

Epic.

I'm guessing none of you were fans of Rebuild of Evangelion, Final Fantasy VII Remake, or Scream 2022.
I really liked Rebuild and like it 100% more than the original Evangelion series which I honestly think is overrated and pretentious. Never played FF7R, and I watched the new Scream but actually have no memory of it, so it probably made no impact on me. This show though is just......bad. So bad. I couldnt get past 3 episodes. The bait and switch, the ruined character arcs, the lazy writing and stilted line deliveries, and maybe the worst offender, the meta commentary. So sick of meta commentary. Very disappointed with this show.

So far, how has the "mainstream" Scott Pilgrim fanbase reacted to this?, what has been their reception to this series?

Also, to me this will always be the official Scott Pilgrim series opening, it encapsulates everything about it perfectly:

I can not wait for the other parts of this to come out and absolutely shit on the entire storyline so that the faggots who are making it can retcon FF7's ending so that Aerith and Zach live.
I sincerely want that to happen. The modders will go to extreme lengths to fix that and the ending will be 10x better than what Square Enix could’ve made if they just kept it canon to begin with. These little turbo autists will spend 6 months re-animating Tifa’s tits, the only thing they care about more than that is that specific, canon ending.

Oh bonus points for the "Official" Ending to have some stupid reference to Final Fantasy X-2 and that little Nigger Shinra.

If that doesn't end up being a thing in the outright plot and FF7 (the actual game) is using "The farplane" to travel through time or some horseshit.

Well, on Rebuild, 1 was just a rethread, 2 made it clear shit was different and got me interested, 3 managed to do a mobius strip into it's own ass that by the end I wanted to never know anything about Evangelion ever again and 4 is still waiting for me to give a shit. I do know the spoilers of Shinji just saying "pass" and going with glasses waifu and I'd dare say that's enough for me.

FF7 Remake, once you go beyond the title being a fucking lie, is entertaining enough. I think it fucked up royally blowing it's load at the end because it really really really wanted to end it with a Sephiroth boss battle but I'm treating it as a sequel with funky alternative realities and it entertained me enough that I'd be willing to play the second part once it comes on PC, assuming that word of mouth doesn't classify it as absolute shit.

Scream no opinions since I didn't see it

Basically, you can do these funky pseudosequels/reimaginings, but be open about it and well, they are not all going to be winners.

As for the topic, Scott Pilgrim. I enjoyed the movie in it's time, though no idea what I would think of it if I watched it now and read the comic ages ago. I do have a certain nostalgia for it but I'm convinced I'd hate it with how I am today. Doing another bait and switch is horseshit, just call it a fucking sequel by the original creator which is what it sounds like and cut the bullshit. Then if it shits the bed, well, it shits it, but at least you save yourself from the "bait and switch" part of the hatred. And it's such a stupid thing to lie about or be quiet about, people will notice from episode 1 that it's not an adaptation.

Having worst girl as your avatar and shit taste go hand in hand.

I was completly done with the Rebuilds after the "Kaworu on the moon" scene, that was the second film IIRC. The third was bullshit to a degree that i can hardly remember anything from it, the time skip is mind blowingly terrible. The last one is so forgetable and unecessary that i couldn't even get mad at Anno for that ending, it was a bigger middle finger to the fan base than EoE (which i always liked, much like the omedeto ending of the original run). I heard a ton of bitching about the addition of Mari before i got around to watching the Rebuilds but honestly, the films have a ton more issues than some pointless new character.
The almost ten year wait between 3.0 and 3.0+1.01 plus the hideous CGI in the last film is just the cherry on top of the shit cake.
