I remember them from the 90's but they never really caught on and eventually disappeared for a few reasons...

1) We simply don't have coins in common circulation that are worth enough. People didn't give a fuck about a quarter in 1995 they sure as shit won't give a fuck today.

2) The devices cost money to put on the carts and neighbors will do shit like fill them with gum and generally destroy anything they can. I remember them getting stuck/jammed quite a bit.

3) Karen gets real pissed off when she has to walk inside to get change from the service desk only to go back out and get a cart and that takes up more employee time then simply collecting the carts.
