stores that waste enough resources on cart wrangling invest in this annoying bullshit. you have to pay to get a cart, and you are given your money back after returning it. usually it's only a quarter because that's enough to make the ape brain do what you want. it's a pain in the fucking ass and good luck if you need to do a quick shop on a day the apes have broken something.
imo shit like this, and park benches you can’t lay down on or ugly paint to defeat graffiti, is the real dystopian hellscape. everyone is "free" from social mores or rules to obey, and the walls of our collective pen are just built narrower and shittier to account for the lowest common denominator.

These have existed for decades, probably longer than I've been around. Back in my day it was a quarter, now its a dollar because of BIDENFLATION. That being said I don't think they're working because I went to a Walmart yesterday that had them and there were still lots of loose carts without coins in the slots.

Seriously though, just put fucking coin locks on them, like most eurofag countries do, and this issue would disappear overnight. Even if all you have are your worthless quarters, all the leftover carts would be tidily put back by a horde of druggies and menials who want every penny they can get heir hands on. I always take the coin locked cart with me.
My home is less than 15 minutes away from the supermarket.
That way I only go there 1/2 a week and no need to lift a ton of things.
There's even a coral next to my appartment where people return the cart.

I know it can seem weird to some but it works.
