I used to follow the guy from 2017 back when the first sub hour was a huge deal and most runs came down to "fast nut" until about 2019. I even went so far as to set up an autohotkey script that ran while I slept to steal bits from the "watch interactive ads for bits" scheme that Twitch used to have. Just to donate the $50 some odd bucks worth of bits it got me because I genuinely liked the streams and community around the game.
Alas over time interest fades, the community becomes more pozzed and you just gotta move on. Checking back from time to time just made things sadder watching things get less fun and the chat/community becoming weirder and more taaahxic.
Small thread tax of a few things I still have on hand since I do miss those good old days. Probably have more and chat clips in old backups. Little reminders of when things were much more fun.

Other than the community submission, the only time I've seen this guy was on that guy Glink's channel when he got banned from AGDQ. That glink guy really seemed to have shot himself in the foot with his channel/momentum, not doing too great. Shift's misery is quite funny though.

I wonder how the SHiFT of when he started really running this game, like, early 2017, would react to seeing him now. Would past him see the raging and muting that he constantly does and back away from it all? Find Jesus? Get a proper job and limit his BfBB time to hobby status? Or was he always destined to turn into what he is the instant he found the game?

I almost feel sad for him. Almost. Doing the exact same thing, all waking hours of your day pretty much, over and over and over and over and over would cause anyone's brain to atrophy away. All his happiness and unhappiness now comes from this one fucking Spongebob game. It's gotta be analogous to people who've been in prison so long that they become instituionalized, not able to function properly anymore in the outside world because their brain has become so used to and tuned with the routines of prison. SHiFT's mind has been institutionalized by this game. He would not know what to do with his life if all his copies of BfBB and any other Spongebob game got scratched and he couldn't just get another one.
 
How close is he to hitting the peak of how fast someone can beat that game without hacks? From what I seen in his older world records they're really near the peak of refinement that can be done in completing the game.

smb1 is one of the most speedrunned games ever, and it's only 5 minutes, and they still never got the perfect run. Shift is one guy playing a 20 year old Spongebob game without any competition. For him I don't think he'll stop even if he gets a sub-40 minute run.
 
Used to watch this guy back before Rehydrated came out, I'm amazed he's still going. You can visibly see his health is deteriorating from chronic stress.

Sum of best segments is 37:59. That isn't going to happen. But it is technically possible

Because this gets asked like every two pages, no. Not even close. The current (I think) TAS of BFBB is a 39:20.10 by FusionVaria.
Only 1m20s off from Shift doesn't sound too bad, but this TAS is done on the Wii version, compared to the Xbox HDD which loses five entire minutes.

This was (partially) before the switch from disks to HDDs, losing probably another minute or so.

Also keep in mind that this TAS was made over 4 years ago, and there has definitely been some discoveries to improve the TAS.

So no, he is currently ~6 minutes behind the theoretical limit from nearly half a decade ago, and only God knows how far behind he is now with the new shit that has been found since then. There is so much more Spongebob left to be played by one singular ~30 year old man with anger issues.

Also while looking up Shift's age this is the first fucking result :story:

It's never over bro. This is the worst outcome, because it's like hitting two jackpots in a row. One would be bad enough, but now two? He's beyond hooked into this shit
 
Slightly surreal to see a thread about this guy but not at all surprising. I remember watching him back in the day when he wore that beanie instead of looking like MoistCritikal at home, guy just looked so much happier and relaxed. His videos made some decent background noise, like his 8hr Movie playthrough. Now he just seems miserable whenever he plays BfBB… but all he does is play BfBB. Nobody’s forcing him to, it’s like he just knowingly chooses to exist in a state of perpetual fuming.
