Silent Hill

Fair enough. SH isn't fixed camera, but the camera changes quite a bit. Tank controls is the best way around that when dealing with transitions.

Fully analog plays like shit in REmake and Zero remasters, but those weren't designed for that. But something like the Outbreak series was, and even that still plays kinda shitty and I resort to tank controls since one little bump on the stick will make you change direction during the camera change.

But if you're considering getting this, I wouldn't worry about tank controls since no developer wants to challenge their players anymore.
I will just stick to SH2/3. The story + atmosphere is the real draw to the game. Not considering getting any new SH game after the slew of mostly garbage soft reboots that happened post-team silent made by studios that really didn't get it. Zero was alright though.

Really couldn't get into Umineko. Its a complete tonal whiplash from Family reunion to "everyone can be randomly instagibbed at any moment" to pseudointellectual bickering about cheese in space wizard court for 70 hours behind the scenes. Just call them aliens already and get it over with. Umineko's story plays out like an alien holodeck simulation via whatever "gameboards" are. Most fans I have encountered wont even define what a "gameboard" is in the first place and there is no real mystery to it beyond solving Beatrice's hidden pirate treasure riddle.

Unpopular Opinion: I prefer the original Silent Hill over Silent Hill 2.
Had a friend once who was of a similar mindset. Rather, he preferred SH1 and SH3 over SH2, although granted, he at least gave SH2 a fair shake to impress him by playing it through from start to finish. Even got the Leave ending on his very first playthrough, totally blind.

I believe he said it was because he prefers the solid narrative-driven horror of SH1 and 3 compared to the more psychological and "personal" horror of SH2.

The first Silent Hill is just more strange and unique in general. I've never quite felt the way I have playing that game. The 1999 setting and original artistic venture of the developers really contributed to that.
It was made before video games started becoming realistic and orchestral. They became more cinematic than video game, which is heavily prevalent today.

Silent Hill 2 is good, but people really love to suck that game's dick and overlook Silent Hill 1.

It's been 23+ years since survival horror dropped tank controls, it's not a new thing devs are doing, it was an old thing they did because of the limitations of digital inputs like d-pads and arrow keys. Here's a quick montage I made. Notice the analog controls in SH2.

Alright then, tell me, what VN do you think has better writing than Umineko.

Its over, they're adding more combat to SH2 remake... This thing is going to suck
....Seriously? Without exiting Ryukishi07 wheelhouse Higurashi > Unineko

Recall seeing some documentaries of former team silent members where they actually say that was the reason behind the tank controls.

Don't know if its an unpopular opinion or not but I liked shattered memories quite a bit, yeah its not a Silent hill game, and the segments where you are running are boring as hell, but I liked the story, and I enjoyed it like I enjoyed some of the better TellTale games, but I would say this game is better than those because it at least has a lot of optional stuff you can do with the phone calls

I somewhat respect shattered memories. It didn’t try shoving itself in the silent hill canon and was its own thing.

The outfit is too clean, I don't know why they gave them shiny stockings. Is Silent Hill now taking place in a S&M building? lol
And they have actual human skin. The old nurses weren't human like that, they were human-like.

And it stops being tank controls and turns into regular ass 3rd person controls as soon as the camera follows the character.

Dont quote me on this, but i thought it was generally agreed that Shattered Memories is one of the, if not the best title out of the post Team Silent era? I remember loving it on my first playthrough, music was spot on, and that ending was a real tearjerker

...It's over.

I could've forgiven some gameplay changes, *maybe* a little tiiiiny bit of the art direction being changed (okay maybe not really) but this...?

If there's anything ive learned from recent years in media is that "modernizing" is the scarlet letter for anything you were looking forward to. I can safely say i have no hopes for this Remake. Not anymore.

Also, "Enhancing the Scare Factor": Walking in the dark when SUDDENLY PYRAMID HEAD TURNS YOU AROUND AND SCREAMS IN YOUR FACE

fuck this shit im booting PCSX2 again

Go on YT and find a video with instructions on how to download and install the HD fan project of SH2. Very minor bugs in it, at least the copy I have. But it looks fantastic and runs great.

They also give you the option to save anywhere.

Did anyone not see it coming? The moment that Bloober was announced as the dev, you should've abandoned any hope that they would preserve the original's anything.

It's why I want them to fix the combat and make something fun out of it. There's zero chance they preserve the atmosphere, tone, story, yadda yadda of the original - zero. But there's a nonzero chance (maybe 5%?) that they could iterate on the moment-to-moment gameplay and turn it into a fun little ride. Survival-horror and horror in general these days are sparse in anything remotely approaching memorable or worthwhile experiences, so I'd take something that didn't piss me off during my time with it (unlike, say, callisto protocol) over something godawful and aggravating.

Can i get anal on you?

Sure, based on the og trailer pretty much everyone picked up that a faithful, loving recreation this wasnt, but i was hoping that *at least*, we'd be getting some love there...

What is there to even "mOdErNiZe"? As far as i know, the only potentially triggering subject is that of sexual assault, and if they try to downplay or remove those themes, then congratulations, you just fucked a huge chunk of the story and some characters.

I believe what's most likely to happen is that Maria won't be as "vulnerable" as in the OG, for some reason western devs have this fear of making their female characters appear helpless no matter what the situation is. That means no death scenes, no abuse, hell, she probably wont be a stripper anymore, damn males and all...

...but again, you do that, you end up fucking the spine of the entire story. Mary is not her own character, she is not her own woman, the town created her *especifically* for James. Her dressing like she does, acting like she does, being abused like she was, dying like she did, it's *intentional*. Maria's both punishment and relief for James; A twisted reminder of his own deceased wife, and a tillitating, guilty fantasy of what he wanted Mary to be.

Born from a Wish delved into a metaish aspect of her, Maria becoming self aware of her being nothing but an illusion created for someone else's sake, and while i can see them attempting this route, i can also see them missing the tragic point of the scenario itself - No matter what she does, or what she feels, Maria will always be just a dream in James's mind... And she accepts it.

Another thing i can imagine pulling is based from an old vid i remember... Some chick did an analisis on Eddie that somehow turned into a rant about gun control... I guess that could be done and have it count as modernizing?

Last thing i can see them pulling is turning Mary/Maria or Angela black. Stretch, i know. But what's more modern than blackwashing white characters these days?

You know, it's kind of funny. They did a remake of Jacob's Ladder, the movie that was practically Silent Hill's progenitor, back in 2019. And they "modernized" it, too. Now it's an Afghanistan vet instead of a Vietnam one, for example. And a lot of the pre-release talk from the creators sounds so familiar, the same stuff you hear in all of these pointless revivals of corpse IPs:
"the producers are looking to make something more akin to an homage and not mimic the original. The plan is to contemporize the story with new situations and characters but still maintain a story that examines issues and poses existential questions"
"not be "necessarily going to the same conclusion, and finding a new way to give the audience an experience that is similar in terms of impact and feeling, but that doesn't play the same tune. It was a very tricky situation in the sense that we were trying to recreate something, but honor the spirit and concept (of the original), while telling a different story"
"a total re-imagining of the cult classic"
And you know what? It fucking sucked. Everybody hated it, and they all pointed out how it was completely pointless garbage that missed the themes of the original, and failed to be entertaining on its own, let alone live up to its namesake. But I bet this remake is gonna be lauded, no matter how much it misses the mark. It'll sell off of name alone and the usual critics will applaud whatever they mangle to make it fit "modern sensibilities." IGN - 9/10 - "Horror game of the year". They can claim again and again that they're sticking to the "traditional story canon", but how many times have we heard something similar, before the project is released and the tune changes to "These modifications to the source material make it even better!"

After twenty, thirty years, some things should just be left alone.

Well yea, it's an example of how giant corporations have bad habits of reviving certain existing IPs and reviving, remaking or rebooting them for a different generation. 2019 Jacob's Ladder was absolute unnecessary dogshit, and this will lierally be the same with the upcoming Silent Hill remake.
