I definitely get you.
SH1 was very much needed to set the groundwork, but I feel like only during SH2 did Team Silent really understand the magic they had discovered. Ito created Pyramid head, Yamaoka was given more freedom to mix tracks that sounded good anywhere (like Alone in the Town), and TS finally had a budget behind them from Konami. They got real people to use for VAs and motion capture, and the 6th generation of consoles starting meant they finally had the ability to make realistically modeled characters in-game (i.e. no faceless/cartoony models). They could step back from being on Konami's bad egg chopping block and use the established lore and broken ground of the first SH to develop the series into the psych horror paragon we know it as today. What I mean is, going from just "a cult" to an "esoteric psychological purgatory" was the true genius move.
And let's not forget, poor Takeyoshi Sato wasn't forced to live as an in-studio slave for the making of SH2's CG cutscenes...
Oh the poor developer who gets paid and could have left his job! Oh no! Konami were always shit but come on. If he didn't slave away we wouls never have gotten such a great development story and CGI.
The staff of SH3 were essentially slaves as well. They greatly enjoyed their work due to the success from fans despite how stressful it was. If you read the book of lost memories with other necessary info about these games and how they were made you wouldn't have such a retarded take on the development history. Silent Hill 2 is still a deeply occult game and everything about the cult is expanded upon in 2. Everything in 2 happens (because of) the cult and Alessa storywise. A literal ending revolves around the cult, the imagery is about the cult. All of the subtext is about the town's history with the occult. The fucking town's power is revealed to be something like Pet Semetary in 2 which was corrupted in 1. Pyramid Head was created by James seeing a rendition of a painting of the Cult's executioners, Toluca Prison section has the early Halo Of The Sun. It is not just an ordinary Cult game, its the opposite and the fact that there are retarded people who still don't get SILENT HILL 1-4 at all letalone its cult aspect is telling. Shrugging off the cult is shrugging off SH2. It would not exist without the cult idea. Silent Hill isn't Silent Hill without the specific cult. Keiichiro Toyama made the cult quite competent and structured like a Japanese cult. This aspect was expanded upon in SIREN 1 & 2 and I would like to see a full realization in this series via a parallel story like Siren did. Unfortunately...
Okay okay you get it, right? But here's my counter to Tom Hulette era anti-cult propaganda:
The beginning bathroom is littered with graffiti of various bible passages in 2. In the bathroom there is a graffiti taken from a Jewish book of (the demon?) Lilith.
The part that says שילי is roughly "a gift from God." Everything in 2 has traces to the cult, they simply went in a more personal direction to shake things up rather than making a stale sequel like they ended up having to do with 3. But everything in 2 explicitly builds onto 1.
Born From A Wish elaborates on the purpose of the Rebirth ending items via a new puzzle. Also has occult aspects with the RE title announcer guy voicing Ernest Baldwin:
Occultism is a core facet of the series and is what makes its horror potent and stands out from any other horror game of the time. It MADE the series unique. Occultism and more personal psych horror. In the making of 2 video, Sex & Death is a core design principle and idea to 2. You see it in the monsters. It is not personal demons. James is more like the protagonist of Crime & Punishment than he is some faggot deals with demons. James *is* a monster. Wanna know why we will never get another true Silent Hill game after 4? Because Westerners can't write cults for shit letalone Japanese inspired ones that actually have interesting things about them. You will always end up with something completely different than what we got with SH and Siren, which may as well not be called Silent Hill. Everyone wants to make Silent Hill what it isn't, or make their own silent hill 2 fanfic; just look at the 2006-2012 developers design philosophies.
This type of shit mocking the cult story aspect is why we are never going to get a true SH followup and is also why Konami will never understand fans or the series. You have many "fans" and tourists who dismiss the cult which ends up with chasing that 2 dragon over and over and over again.
TLDR: Silent Hill 1 you explore the town with some history and ties to the cult like the drug White Claudia, in 2 it fleshes out the town's entire occult history. Silent Hill IS SUPPOSED TO BE A WEIRD TOWN WITH INTERESTING (BLATANTLY OCCULT) HISTORY with stories revolving around complex or interesting characters. It is NOT purgatory or Hell. It should never have been interpreted as such.
