Silent Hill

The sound design is all over the place in the remake. It's like as soon as you make it into town, you suddenly hear the great knife screeching that you hear in the apartments right before the boss fight with Pyramid Head. It's so tone deaf.
That was so fucking jarring, I noticed it immediately and came to the conclusion that the sound team of the remake didn't stop to think what that sound was and where it took place, and decided to just copy and paste it into completely inappropriate locations.
I just know that someone, at least one person out there, will claim that James is hearing the echoes of the previous time loops or some shit because he's been through this before.

I can't remember a single track from the remake and I'm trying real hard. It's wild how unremarkable they are.

I think that's another part of the issue is that because the game doesn't let you breath enough or just absorb the ambience of the levels because it's too busy throwing monster encounters at you, you don't really get to listen to or absorb the music/atmospheric sounds as much because you're too busy running through it like a schizophrenic homeless commando.

How bad was the Silent Hill 2 remake? I recall when it finally launched there was a lot of "its good, ackshually!" floating around, which struck me as very suspicious.

I'm guessing it was bad.
Gameplay

Combat has been totally overhauled to something more like RE4, guns are used for hitstun to lower enemy defenses for a melee strike. Alternatively you can get up close and use your i-frame side step for openings. This system works fine, its good even. The problem is that you don't want engaging gameplay that makes you think about enemy herding, target priotization and memorizing timings in Silent Hill 2. Now you're doing something that's actually fun which kills the atmosphere. Silent Hill 2 is the easiest Silent Hill by far because all the enemies are bipeds that don't deal that much damage even on hard. They're supposed to be a chore to beat these defenseless meatbags to death. Conversely Pyramid Head is SUPPOSED TO BE DANGEROUS, but in remake it's like you're fighting a souls boss you get right up in his face juking his attacks, he even has multiple phases where he gets grumpy and starts swinging more aggressively. It's ridiculous and ruins the product as a whole.

Story

James' voice actor is the only one that might be an improvement line to line. Mary/Maria's sounds far too young and completely fails the dual acting role required of her. They also removed any sexual aspect of Maria so its more like her innocent early 20s counterpart that's also soft spoken...??? Like instead of grabbing James' hand and forcing it to her chest she tries to touch his arm and he pulls away. So the entire mindfuck of Maria/Mary is gone, they botched it.

The other characters are mostly sidegrades/new interpretations, they work, they're fine, changes are not a problem in remakes. If there's no changes why remake right? I still prefer the originals but the new versions are interesting.

One script change I really hate is right before the Eddie fight James throws the first punch. Eddie points his gun and James quickly replies with a sucker punch to the nose because they're not standing on opposite sides of the room in the remake. The problem here is that this ruins the reveal of Eddie's personal hell. James escalated to a fight when in the original Eddie's hell makes him believe everyone's making fun of him when James is supposed to be trying to talk him down. It also hurts James' arc showing he's perfectly willing to attack a human being. Of course its totally justified but its important for Eddie to attack unprovoked so I don't know why it was changed.

James also doesn't have his "I killed a... human being" line instead reflecting in silence afterwards. It was a good line since its something that the player can pickup on to have dual meaning on repeat playthroughs since he's obviously remembering what he did to Mary at this point.
tl:dr yea, not great. you can play many other games for similar gameplay and ultimately it spits in the face of a work of art.

Don't you just love the comforting, relaxing beats of Silent Hill 1, perfect for studying/programming/whatever?
(god i hate the "who's here after remake announced/can't wait for remake version" commenting faggots, literally "huge game fan excited to play it for the first time")
oh yes, perfect soundtrack to study with, with bangers such as:
I find it weird how konami never bothered to port the original game to pc, even mgs1 had one, truly an eternal exclusive to the ps1(ignoring PSN re-release). No chance in hell they're gonna port it now, what a bunch of lazy niggers, we're lucky that the other games got pc versions from back then for people to work with, and that GOG gave a fuck to make SH4 fully playable without emulation
Regarding SH1's remake, I'm only interested in how the monsters are gonna look on ultra 4K HD 666fps, since there's more variety in design than SH2. I can't imagine them without the ps1 graphics, literally made for that console
The stupid fucking droning screeching in the first apartment and unnecessary string addition to the opening music told me everything about the demake's dogshit taste in ambience.
I still don't like bloober team, they fuck up the little(and big) details that enhanced the experience of the games back in the day, It doesn't help that they're gonna remake 1 and 3 now.

Guy Cihi is James regardless if redditor fans and softies see him as a crazy wealthy conspiracy theorist. David Schaufele is Eddie. Donna Burke is Angela. Jacquelyn Breckenridge is Laura. Monica Taylpr Horan is Mary/Maria. Forever.

I don't see how people can defend the new performances. Luke Roberts didn't do much better than Troy Baker in the hd collection and had to use a gruff fake voice to sound American.
The voice performances of SH2 remake and the cinematography is a step down from the original genius casting. They didn't even use American actors this time (which isn't an issue, Angela's original voice is Australian but it adds a unique level to her performance) Or C list VAs who resemble the originals.

Of course nostalgia plays a role, Kerri Hoskins and Richard Divizio will always be Sonya and Kano to a certain generation, but the remake can't even manage to improve on some random non-actors pulled off the street in Tokyo in 2001? And yeah, using Troy Baker was lazy and predictable and fans had none of it.

Of course nostalgia plays a role
It's not just nostalgia it's genuinely something clearly special enough to unite those who have an eye and ear for art and talent. Lightning in a bottle. Those special moments like watching David Lynch's work and Stanley Kubrick's and Andre Tarkovsky's films. All were clearly a cut above many other works. And for a silly horror game, even compared to Resident Evil and other horror games of the era Silent Hill 1-4 stand out with their storytelling and emotional moments. 2 specifically was designed to hit home.

I don't understand how nostalgia is seen as a bad thing these days, villified even. It's from same people who'll be like "'Remember when?' is the lowest form of conversation".

A Silent Hill 4 thread to tie up.
The game starts strong but sucks near the end.

That said, the twist with Walter is great. Up until then, ghosts are shown as these poor wretches who can't control their own limbs. Then Walter shows up and is more goal-oriented. He's not being dragged. The game keeps rewriting the rules (with Andrew and Richard, too)

I wonder how Kago Shintaro would direct a Silent Hill game. IYK, YK.

Great art but not Silent Hill. Wouldn't be bad but doesn't really belong in Silent Hill. I can see a little bit of Francis Bacon gore mess in his stuff but it's too clean and precise to be Silent Hill at all.

Surreal as it is, it leaves zero room for imagination compared to any distorted and disturbed figures you see in 1-4. It's just guro with a surreal flavor.

Silent Hill monsters ARE Francis Bacon in style. And there's really nothing more that I think works. Each team silent game brought their designs and made it work well. 1 is centered around Alessa, 2 James, 3 Heather and the God, and 4 Walter's mind. And in the next planned PS3 Team Silent game I can imagine since it dealt with daylight horror and shadows it'd be distorted shadow figures or people turning into fucked up Texas Chainsaw + Jacob's Ladder looking grungy monsters or a mix of both ideas.

Now if we're going "let's just copy 2 again" which is a predictable move (and a proven thing Team Silent was against) then they'd definitely just use him for a story about someone who suffers with (actual) OCD or some shit.

Plus it really is just Hellraiser.
Hellraiser had more provoking images. The religious themes also greatly help relate it to Silent Hill's cult themes.

If you told me this screencap was from a Hellraiser game (and I didn't know Silent Hill) I'd believe you.

Also a more obvious possible Hellraiser reference:

I want to see more cult tools in new games. More of the cult overall, we haven't really gotten anything like SH1 in terms of that. Silent Hill 3 was close but still lacked the direct occult imagery throughout the world since it was more level based. Only reused stuff from 1, and had a new sect of the religion.

It was foretold by gyromancy.👵📜🔺🐐

I did like the little intra-cult beef going on. Kaufmann and Vincent weren’t fire and brimstone true believers, they were just trying to grift.
