Anyway, Tumblr artists are so insistent on trying to say ugly things are cute, but they go out of their way to make everything they draw exaggeratedly super ugly, it's really counter-productive to what they're trying to preach.

Knowing them, these Tumblr artists are probably doing it out of some critical theorist/Marxist existentialist bullshit regarding social constructs that they didn't quite fully understand after reading about it in philosophy class or some shit. Since beauty is a social construct, they're trying to redefine beauty as, well, that.

Anyway, Tumblr artists are so insistent on trying to say ugly things are cute, but they go out of their way to make everything they draw exaggeratedly super ugly, it's really counter-productive to what they're trying to preach.

That hits the nail on the head regarding most of the problems with many art styles on tumblr. You'd think the best way to encourage people with typically 'ugly' traits would be to show them in a positive light, not exaggerate them in a way that has probably made more than a few people utterly self concious.

Really, in the hands of someone who knows what they're doing, most of the typical 'ugly' traits could probably be made cute. But it takes skill and effort... and intention of actually making it cute.

I like the first two actually. The rest are pretty meh though, even by tumblr standards. But I guess I am thankful that they aren't super hairy or a ambiguous dark-skinned race for once.

The only saving grace they have isn't being like most Tumblr art where they look like a shallow attempt at diversity or like a failed attempt at making a design where the face could look like something from say Aeon Flux. Hell, compared to most if not all art on this thread, these aren't the worst in said comparison.
