She looks like she's having an allergic reaction to all the bee stings. In fact, it puts me in mind of that deformed character in Hemlock Grove (don't judge me, my wife was binge-watching it).

Excessive detail =/= Realism
It's like doing that, then calling it 'realistic', is so that they can look good even though they clearly know nothing about realistic proportions. Amethyst's design is simplistic, she has those fat cat-mouth lips, and a perfectly circular head (she isn't drawn with a neck either), trying to translate that back into reality is probably difficult, and as a result you get that creepy chicken-scratch mess...
That magical girl webcomic looks okay but something about it puts me off, not least the bad colouring in the panels. Looks like they put so much effort into the designs and promo-art that the content looks disappointing. Why did they choose flat colors with no shading? I'm cynical enough to think they know they're being lazy, but they might not.
...I also think the webcomic artist sucks at colors, what even is that palette? Everything seems slightly desaturated and muddy, what I notice the most is the girls' skin tones. Why are the black girls grayish? It looks weird.
I won't doubt it's a common thing on Tumblr to get so caught up in being realistic and 'diverse' that all these artists seem to forget the point of character designs is to be appealing. I hate generic moe anime girls but, compared to Agents of the Realm, I'd take that any day with a dose of escapism over random college girls that look like they're badly cosplaying.

Where the heck is the 'real' part of realistic exactly?
She can't be referring to it as realistic, as in pertaining to reality because Amethyst is not a real person, as a result the work of art cannot denote symbolically anything found in real life. It is a construct, a representation of an image of a person, with zero denotation. There is no proper definition of what it means to represent the image-body of Amethyst as realistic Amethyst. If we were to say that the body image of Amethyst is that of its symbolic representation of the show, attempting to "represent ... as" from its original representation when there is zero denotation would simply lead to a representational derivation of a representational derivation. It's nonsense to describe it as realistic in this sense, as its saying that there is denotation from which the body image this is based on arrives from.
Instead, she must be referring to it as realistic because it attempts (poorly) create the illusion of three dimensions, which fails for many reasons, chief of them being that it doesn't follow the structural elements of light or an ideal anatomical representation of the body-image of Amethyst. Further more, the whole work is insincere in this regard as the scratch marks and the lines of the pencils can be seen, a purely baroque element if there was one, compared to the uniformity of the material in a 'realistic' painting.

Because you gotta make sure the character looks ethnic enough. They can't look anything like whitey or their own followers will rip the artist's liver out for being racist cuz they don't look black enough. Or Asian enough.
That does remind me, though, wtf is the deal with SJWs and Connie's nose? They act like it's a common ethnic trait rather than an individual or stylistic one.

well it's kind of a stretch, but you could argue that since she has the same square-ish jaw and big lips as Garnet, that Rose looks like a black albino, but that's a stupid argument and i hope no one on tumblr ever comes to the same conclusion.
