I feel you. Shipping never goes right in a fandom. I want to see two characters for being two characters, not them being gay baby cinnamon rolls or whatever. Sure, I can ignore it. But it's still bothersome when the only thing you see a lot of people do with two characters is not expanding their character or giving them an interesting characteristic, it's just a whole lot of "will they, won't they" stuff with additional merits of romance. The day a fandom can actually respect two people of the same gender being in a friendship rather than a relationship is the day the internet truly changes for the better.
Its horrible when there is either canon or ""implied"" gay characters, people laser focus exclusively on that.
Marina from splatoon is a good example. The same people who say crap like "MARINA IS A VERY DEEP AND COMPLEX CHARACTER!! SHE'S MORE THAN JUST HER BOOBS YOU STUPID GOONER!!!1!!!"
And then they dumb her down to "she's Pearl's girlfriend" and salivates every time Pearl does literally anything.
She's a soldier and engineer but thats just unimportant set dressing for this people. If anything she's just "an autistic baby that likes to yap about machines"

This comic perfectly sums up how the fandom sees her:

(this was done 100% unironically, they genuinely see their relationship like this)

This makes me want to bring up something I shared on the South Park thread. This girl and two others made this thread on Twitter called spgirlstwt and it started out as a way to exchange ideas as to what the writers can do with the 4th grade girl characters and I'm thinking "Finally, a place where we can exchange ideas and what they can do with the female 4th graders". I'm not saying that Trey and Matt will do anything with the girls even if they saw that thread, but it would at least show them that they have female fans and that these could be ideas they could do with said girls rather than making them another generic stereotype clone. Needless to say that the entire # became nothing but lesbian shipping and gender headcanons. When the new season's trailer came out, this was the response from someone.

Leaving aside the fact that this person clearly only saw the one season where Heidi was a big character (and thus its weird to dislike their source material now), what did she expect when nobody in this fandom has given a reason as to why Matt and Trey should give a shit about the girls when the only thing people do with them is lesbian shipping and sometimes headcanon some of them as transgender? To tell you the truth, its not even so much the shipping that bugs me about all of this. Its the fact that these people just expect Matt and Trey to just randomly give them a lesbian couple without giving them a reason why they should even care about the girls to begin with. At least with Tweek and Craig they had their own unique personalities before they became canon. This just proves to me that they don't want Matt and Trey to do anything with the girls and just want their lesbian ships to be canon and that's it.

What is it with grown-ass womanchildren and YA fantasy books made for teenagers?
Like, she can probably just expand her palette beyond high school library books she found from Booktok and find exactly what she's looking for in the amount of time it takes to make draw two separate images complaining about it.

Small bonus:

Nigga I'm never gonna stop being pissed that politics types managed to subvert the blatant otherkin joke and gaslight all places of authority and the masses into thinking it's about trannies.

I'm also never going to forgive this fucking coward for giving up on their dream of dropping HOT STICKY LOADS to become an easily offended troon.

Really hilarious too considering how toxic their dynamic actually is. Some of it gets lost in translation between the Japanese text and the English localisation, only touched upon in a character interview that I'm having difficulty finding where Marina talks about how Pearl basically ghosted her for a month over differences in the direction they wanted to take the band, resulting in Marina agreeing to the Damp Socks collab despite Pearl setting it up without consulting Marina due to the fear of losing Pearl; the rabid Pearlina stans were justifying this by saying that Pearl was "guiding Marina out of her comfort zone" and calling her a good bandmate and girlfriend for this??? Even in Side Order where Marina flirts with and praises Pearl, Pearl just...doesn't respond and basically stonewalls her. People will justify this toxic yuri, because the lesbians are starving, I guess. It's a shame, because they're both interesting characters outside of their relationship (being boring at best in the English translation and abusive at worst in the original Japanese narrative).

Also, another thing that gets lost in translation between JP and EN is Marie's introversion and social awkwardness. On top of curating the Agent 4 Encyclopedia, it makes Marie actually more likely to be autistic than Marina who actually seems relatively normal outside of her high intelligence. If you're picking one uwu autistic agent, why not Marie lmao?

Doesnt surprise me much to see those changes. They changed Marina at first on the news dialogues to be a lot more sassy and even insulting Pearl. Apparently the people responsible had to apologize and change that in future updates of splatoon 2.
Its Funny how a lot of things they would consider bad in a straight relationship is suddenly completely OK as long as its Yuri. (I swear I saw people justify pedo stuff because it involved lesbians).
My guess is they always see her as this cool girlboss who is just tired all the time and doesn't take shit from anyone (some even think of her like people thought of Mario in 2010s of being an asshole to their sibling (or cousin in Marie's case)).

Side note but its always funny to see people who headcanon Pearl as male (very often, a biological one) specially now with that context you gave about how toxic their relationship really is.

Apparently I just can’t leave CaptProlactin alone, because she just dropped another post. This time on something that older women actually tend to flock to: Hallmark romance movies.

I’ll admit, I haven’t actually sat down and watched one of these movies, because I know I’ll probably think they’re lame and not a great use of my time. But everyone and their dog has already poked fun at these stories. Hell, I saw another comic do it years ago and better, mostly because the preachiness isn’t there (“muh pride events”, really?).

Also, large metropolitan cities really do suck. Yeah Chicago has some nice shit, but it can be hard to experience the ~cultural diversity~ when you have niggers and gangbangers trying to pump you full of lead for glancing at them funny. Actually, depending on where you are, that is the cultural diversity.

How in the fuck does lowering rent, starting Pride events and "inviting diverse communities" save the fall festival? Obviously it's a joke that the fall festival is "in danger" for no reason, but in stories like this the danger is usually that people don't care about traditions anymore. The protagonist then has to do something to get people in the spirit and remind them the tradition is worth keeping. They raise money to revitalize the crumbling buildings, or get a volunteer team to clean up the park, or breathe new life into local businesses to get everyone working together and all of the camaraderie brings the festival back because THAT'S what the festival is; a coming together of people who all live and work together celebrating their efforts.
If there's the one evil old man who hates everything, he's usually either disillusioned after the loss of someone/something meaningful to him and can thus be won over by the community coming together, or he's a corrupt official or something who will then get arrested for being an asshole whatever corrupt thing he was doing. And the hunky boyfriend overcoming trauma and their relationship being strengthened would mirror the overall story of the community!
The fantasy is that, in 90 minutes, someone can make a change in their community and reignite their passion for something beautiful. They don't have to be trapped in a sad, gray office job that doesn't nourish their soul. They can live somewhere beautiful, do something they're passionate about (I'm sure someone is passionate about making coffee,) fall in love, and have a community worth celebrating. But Captain Prolactin seems to hate the concept of a "fantasy" in general. She shits on literally everything that isn't just "and then everyone agreed with my politics and I got to have cats and hang out at home." It's like the only valid fantasy in her eyes is one that can be enacted in real life, and aligns with her political beliefs.
Even if she got what she wanted, what then? "And then everybody lived in Chicago and worked in an office and everybody was brown and queer THE END!" That's not a fantasy at all. That's just reality for some people, and it's not even a good one. Your apartment is cheap and gray, your office is cheap and gray, and every building on your commute is cheap and gray too. Homeless people constantly badger you. Some guy stole your bike but the cops won't do anything because it's a big city and there are bigger fish to fry. You have to walk to get your coffee, which is $7 and not even good. It would be fast, at least, but Starbucks has become McDonald's so it's too crowded to be fast. Everywhere is crowded. The shitty corner store with the fridges barely cold to save electricity is crowded, with shit piled up in fire hazard narrow hallways. Someone's in your way, or you're in someone else's way, all the time, and nobody says "sorry" or "excuse me," they just bump you like YOU'RE the asshole for existing. There are bars on the windows and bulletproof glass between you and the cashier, who barely speaks English, which makes your transaction more difficult. You get the wrong change but can't tell him because there's already someone super impatient waiting behind you and he wouldn't understand you anyway. The muslim guy next door beats his wife and you can hear it, but you can't do anything because he's muslim and you don't want to look racist. There are gunshots outside, which is weird because it's fucking impossible to get a gun with all the laws, but I guess criminals don't follow the law anyway. There are more news stories about kids trooning out and killing themselves, must be the conservatives doing it. At least you can go out to the club and have unfulfilling sex with someone who hasn't been STD tested in weeks, who may or may not actually wear a condom because something something gay culture. But you have to be back home by midnight so you can get enough sleep to do it all again tomorrow.
BOY WASN'T THAT A FUN, FULFILLING STORY TO SPEND MY LIMITED TIME ON EARTH GETTING INVESTED IN!!
I don't even know how to end this comment. I just fucking hate Captain Prolactin's aversion to happiness. I hope she becomes a nun and leaves the Internet and stops making comics.

To add to my other post about South Park. This is exactly what I'm talking about. I see a few fans going "Since Tweek and Craig are canon, South Park should give us a w/w couple." The problem with that is that the female 4th graders are hardly characters. Why would the creators randomly make two background girls lesbians just to appeal to the 3 people who asked for this? Again, these guys have to give the creators a reason to give a shit about the female 4th graders first by giving them personalities that aren't just "Gay". Hell, the sad thing is that even after Craig and Tweek became canon, all the fans care about is how gay the two are. Nothing outside their relationship matters because you get people going "Where's the other" when one has the spotlight.

I will also say this as well. One other thing that annoys me about the "queer" community is that when there's a character that's hinted at liking a character who's the same sex, the character has to be fully gay. You can never headcanon them as being bi or even pansexual (if you wanted to be more "inclusive") because thats "gay eraser". For example going back to Pokemon Sun and Moon with Mallow. A few people in the fandom believe she's a lesbian because of her relationship with Lillie. Yet when someone pointed out how Mallow could be bi due to her always wanting to be close with everyone in the anime, suddenly that was a huge "no no".

SPOILER_tumblr_8e229374919d946ca0e97db4dc5422e8_766f3dac_640-1.webpYoung_Mallow_and_Lana.webpScreenshot_1279.webpseason22_ep15_ss02.webpseason22_ep35_ss04.webp

Don't get me wrong, none of these pictures really indicates attraction and just shows the type of character Mallow is, but since these guys love to take small things with two same sex looking at each other as proof of attraction then why can't others do the same with two people of the opposite sex?
