Dear god I wasn’t even sure what character that was supposed to be. Pretty much the only things in common are the horns and eyes...![]()

what even is a "transmasc"? are they transitioning between masks? between masonic branches?
"DM as long as you asspat me"
I don't know what to think.Gender Wiki said:Transmasculine is a term used to describe transgender people who were assigned female at birth, but identify with masculinity to a greater extent than with femininity.
I swear, Tumblr's festishzation of trans people is so bizarre to me. I doubt many of these people understand this but trans people...don't want to noticed. In fact, many of them transition because they want to be normal and blend in. Because actual trans people understand that passing is important. I guarantee these people haven't met a trans person in their life other than some person claiming to be on the internet.
So basically Tumblr has turned being a tomboy into a super special trans identity?
How much you wanna bet that most of these "transmasc" people don't even dress masculine or have any interests/hobbies that are considered even remotely masculine?
I've always found Homestuck's different ranges of artists to be the most bizzare. The same fan group that can make the art by Sojmilk are the same people that can make this lovely piece:![]()

Appeal? What is that???
Okay, if I can give the artist some credit, they tried to give a variety of body types to the girls. I will admit that even when I was younger ( you know, the audience that's being targeted to here) I found it odd that all of the girls for being teenagers all from different places had the same body type.
HOWEVER, the fact that they changed the clothes is so odd to me. They aren't that bad in the original (hell, when I was still in highschool (the girls are 16) I saw much MUCH worse than that) so I don't know why they went to censor it even more. To add onto that, they gave everyone such derpy faces compared to the original. Which is even more odd considering the second original picture looks more like an in-between frame of animation.
But what I think this also shows these people's inability to realize the difference between "appeal" and reality.
In reality, people tend to wear pretty dull clothing unless they're really into fashion and makeup and all that. This isn't a bad thing and that's because it's easier to put on something that's darker to wear than to spend time looking for bright clothes that'll get dirtied up quicker(plus in some cases it's cheaper). In particular, many teenagers who are lazy are probably not going to wear a bunch of bright clothing everyday. It's not that they'll never will, but it's not as normal as you think. But in an animation or comic, you're allowed to take some liberties with this. So what's my point here?
The point is that in reality, to these young artists, yeah it makes sense to wear normal clothes. And sometimes that really helps to ground a character who's supposed to be normal. But that's also a problem in itself. It's boring as hell. The reason why so many character designers like to make such complicated designs isn't as much as functionality as much as it is adding life to a character. Because in real life, no one wears tacky bright clothing all the time. Therefore, when you see a character have this scheme it sticks out more and is memorable to the eye.
This is why so many super hero and magical girl shows use bright, bold color schemes for the characters. It's why you always see the red haired character acting fiery and passionate. It's why you might see a blue character be gloomy and grim. There's a whole psychology to it, but you can basically google, "color theory psychology" and you''ll find out more.
These artists don't seem to understand the nuance of this. AT ALL. For example, Tecna, the pinked haired one, is colored in bright greens and pinks to represent her femininity and interest in technology. Her original design is almost like this gaudy neo-futuristic punk. It's actually quite clever for a show about shilling out toys.
Her newer redesign doesn't stand out as well and tell you much about her personality. She looks bland. That's not fun in a fantasy about transforming into a magic pixie girl. In fact, it destroys the entire point.
Like, I can get wanting to give a character a more "normal" design. I really do. But what's the point of a fantasy, if there is none? A teenager in these shows can wear normal clothes, but they have to be stylized in some way to stand out. When they don't, you get young anime protag brown hair and same facial structure over and over.
To be honest here, i always found Winx bodies uncanny and creepy as hell, as if someone could push them and their torso would snap away from their hips. But this redraw, while not having brownwashing/inflation is still ugly and the clothes have no effect at all. Like, it's subtle but did you know you can tell which girl does what just by their designs?
Blonde girl wears an orange skirt with SUNs(solar) around it, brown haired girl has LEAFs (plant) on her skirt, pink hair girl clothes evoke a neon feel (techno) and blue hair girl looks like a street dancer(music), that leaves RED HAIR girl who uses FIRE.
These redraws make them all look bland and lame, even the red hair girl ins't red haired anymore why would do that? And the other one is wearing a NASA shirt, wtf she is the music girl wtf???

This also goes to a lot of redesigns i see. Even when they're not inherently harmful, they simply don't get the appeal of the original designs.
*Winx sperg mode on*

I linked that before, but Winx Club character designer is really talented and good in fun stylization, animation in early seasons wasn't the best (it started as niche Italian cartoon so the didn't have lot of money) and didn't give the justice to designs. And anatomy was actually well thought out (see naked Stella).
Winx actually have very distinct and orginal art direction.
BTW, as chubby kid I never mind how slim Winx girls were. Same about clothes, I will never wear something so skimpy, but it's a cartoon. Winx live in magic futuristic world where clothes are bright, fairies wore glittter disco outfits and their boyfriends wear crop tops.
They still have same bodies on this redraw, only less stylized.
I'm the only one who never was bothered by same-body/same-face? More diverse designs are fun, but same-face isn't a BIG SIN like people recently are describing it. And this ctitisism resulted in tumblr same-face anyway.

It's the textbook definition of bootleg- Cheap chunky shapes and off-colour paint.
Also hey do you think Velma likes space and aliens? Shot in the dark, I know, but I just can't tell for sure. If only the artist had made it clearer that Velma was a space-loving youth who's really in with the cool teen trends of today.
Maybe I'm showing my age... maybe I'm not "with it" with the young kids and their newfangled cartoons... but I thought Velma was the ultimate skeptic. She'd be Scully not Mulder.![]()

I actually think this is kinda cute, especially in comparison to the other grotesque monstrosities in this thread.![]()
