Michael Cusacks other work is nothing like Smiling friends but I personally find his Damo and Darren series hilarious. It's a cartoon about two Aussie alcoholic bums who live off welfare and get up to hijinks. Worth checking out if you're craving more comedy from one of the Smiling friends creators.
 
I would honestly prefer ending with the three banger seasons we got over having it continue just because it's popular if the creators feel they can't bring the quality they want and have it all turn soulless.
It's a premise that had limited, if really great, milage. The longer it runs the harder it is to keep the magic alive, and given how much of a success the show was I'm certain we will see more great work from them even if it's a different show.
Still hoping for some specials every now and again, though.

Venture bros was done so dirty, they didn’t even know till they were half way thru writing the next season

I knew I wasn't crazy for remembering this. That makes it a little more disappointing but maybe when they got word they reflected on what they really had left in them. I'm not so sure there's any secret reason, from day 1 they said they were so grateful for even 1 season and they never wanted the show to go on too long.

Michael Cusack and Zach have confirmed that Season 3 was the last season of Smiling Friends, but they don't deny that there will be more special episodes in the future.

This is the premature end of an amazing era of Adult Swim, but my god, they ended in a pretty high note.

Didn't Zach say he didn't want the show to become rick and morty and he was hating the fans? I heard the rumors but is it true?
 
In my opinion if there's any secret reason beyond what they gave at most it's that the show became enough of a mainstream success that the suits started trying to really interfere and they decided between dealing with that and burnout they'd rather move on.
 
Maybe when they sat down to brainstorm new eps it became clear what they feared about stale writing/moving it past its prime was closer than they originally thought?

Either way, it’s going out on a solid note which is extremely rare atp.
