Michael Cusack and Zach have confirmed that Season 3 was the last season of Smiling Friends, but they don't deny that there will be more special episodes in the future.

This is the premature end of an amazing era of Adult Swim, but my god, they ended in a pretty high note.
you have got to be fucking kidding me.

well they released the very first episode on april fool's so until then I'm gonna cope and pray that this is a joke

Okay, but if you can't give me a special, I'm gonna fucking shoot myself and make you two watch

This is speculation, but I bet what happened was that they sat down to write new episodes and realized all they had were rehashes and sequels to old episodes.

Gonna have to frame my Smiling Friends sweater up like a sports jersey now. This show honestly meant a lot to me because I grew up on newgrounds, and Zach was probably my favorite animator from that era. This show was like a perfect love-letter to that time period as well as all the new talented artists who've made great content in recent years. Rest in Peace, Smiling Fellas, even though I was always sad Hellbenders never got a chance this show sorta filled that imaginary void.

Man, what a shame they were never forced to bring on a bunch of women writers to turn the show into a boring pile of shit.
Perhaps this is exactly what happened.

*insert a SF-esque skit of Michael and Zack trying to politely refuse hiring some new shitty writers until things get so awkward they just abruptly go "uhhh... actually the show's over" que end credits.*

I can understand it. Not just to keep the series from deteriorating, but IIRC Mike and Zach made it to have fun. Better stop before it stops being fun anymore.

Rick and Morty is on its ninth season, go watch that lol.
It's so strange to me that Rick and Morty is still going because I have literally not heard someone talk about that show in like... half a decade. I have so many friends that are into adult animation not one of them mentions it in conversations about them. Like who is even watching it at this point? How does it have the ratings to keep going? It baffles me.

The last thing post-schezwan I remember hearing about it was the Evil Morty twist thing, and that shit must've been like 8 years ago.

I never watched it so I only ever heard about it from the internet swarm and if you told me it ended 5 years ago I'd believe you.

If you know about this stuff, this isn't burnout or "leaving on a high."
This is a fallout behind the scenes between the creators and/or Adult Swim. It was weird to me that they would have 2 more seasons to do before the ratings were out for season 3. Gotta remember these are NG guys, they wouldn't have liked that weight of expectation on them.
All of these problems would've been solved if they were simply given a year break rather than this milking of the IP. These guys also are known for commitment issues in their work, the moment there's even a hint of something going stale or losing some control, they bounce. They'll be bound by an NDA so we won't hear the truth.
By the way, I'm really not a fan of Michael's humor but then I'm not a fan of Zach's laziness/attitude so might just be over speculating. Just trying to find meaning to it.
