Sounds like regular New England winter weather to me.
From my experience growing up in New England we usually get one or two big snow storms in the whole winter season and then that snow just sits there undisturbed for the rest of winter.

I was hearing about numerous incidents involving charcoal grills being used indoors on the East Coast during that one really nasty coldsnap a while back.

I have no idea what would possess someone to burn charcoal indoors.
At least in the Old Colonies and especially rural New England a lot of people might hear about how their neighbors have wood stoves that are approved for both coal and charcoal if the family wants to use those sources of fuel. I had one when I was a kid. it sucked, but we burnt whatever was cheapest in it. People who don't understand why those things have to be rated for certain fuel sources probably think they can just do whatever in their fireplace.

Further west where heating systems like that are uncommon or unheard of, I have no idea.

Mid-season snow storms are unusual but not uncommon. We had relatively few last year for instance, but several the year before.

Also heard a story about a family that brought their gas grill inside their apt for heat and promptly gassed themselves with carbon monoxide in Houston.
There are a few stories like that every winter. Chimneys exist for a reason and it ain't Santa Claus.
It's like when roads flood and people still drive into it and get stuck, or when kids get left in hot cars. Some folks just don't know how to survive.

I do like the snow and the colder weather, but it has its fair share of annoying features. I was a bit surprised the big storm came this late in the season this year, but we still ended up getting buried. I hate my driveway because the place I rent doesn't have smooth concrete, it's all fucking peebles. So when I'm shoveling I have to be conscious of hitting an bunch of rocks if I don't have the right amount of force exerted. Though when the snow has seetled enough it's a bit easier to shovel. I'm more concerned when the snow eventually melts, people's basements are going to resemble China during the rainy season.

Biggest killer by far in NE is portable generators. They are common because we know the grid is shit and it fails often. Every single outage you hear about people gassing themselves because they run them in the basement or garage. Or to close to a house with soffit vents. I once worked with a guy who lost his wife and kid because the guy in the condo next door to his unit ran one in the garage and it filled theirs. Left for work in the morning and came home to find them still in bed at night.

But there is some next level exceptionalism going on in TX. Idling a car in a closed garage? Hasn't that been a TV suicide plot device since the dawn of time?
And the thing is she was on the phone with someone else who didn't think a thing was wrong until she started passing out.

Aren't a bunch of those most likely to freeze to death in the South, Blacks?
You trying to get Antifa to set the place on fire? I mean I guess that would warm things up a bit...

You know you have a nuclear take when even Twitter wokies have been calling out their own for smugposting about Southerners freezing to death because "they're all racist rednecks anyway"

Twitter has never been one to concern itself with collateral damage.

I grew up in the North and moved to the South. By the standards to which I am accustomed, we are now experiencing a delightful accumulation of snow. By local standards, it's the goddamn end of the world. Every business around here is closed except the donut place, which has one heroic baker. I usually don't tip someone for picking up a donut and putting it in a bag for me, but this guy earned it just by showing up to work. I've seen only one plow and almost no sidewalks have been shoveled. Some of the locals are making the best of it, though. Being unused to snow, but knowing what to do in it, they have improvised sleds out of household objects.

Burning charcoal warm, house cold. Use charcoal in house to make it warm.

This is basically the thought process. I won't say everyone doing this is completely stupid because even a smart person will be dumb when desperate.
