I like how you don't mention the fucking morons who dev Palemoon don't even steal FireFox's up to date security and feature code, and it's entirely because they're so fucking autistic they can't emotionally cope with the browser's new interface.

People who use Palemoon should literally fucking die.
they have introduced security measures from firefox actually, but they can't take the fixes that revolve around their new sandboxing without changing up the entire browser. They instead came up with a different solution, which they also use in their new browser Basilisk which is very much similar to Pale Moon in a lot of ways.

I have tried Basilisk and it is extremely sleek, they even have support for WebExtensions addons, but for the life if me I can't figure out why they're avoiding implementing sandboxing.

I don't know why people are recommending fucking VLC player here, I personally recommend PotPlayer:

Pros:
  • Very customizable (skins, codecs, UI options, hotkeys..etc.).
  • Lightweight.
  • Full keyboard controls.
  • Plays everything out of the box, and if you can't play something, then just download a codec/renderer/whatever you need and tell the program to use it).
Cons:
  • Options menu can be dizzying at first, so many options!
  • Tweak the update reminders, or you'll get constant and annoying nagging.

Bonus for Weebs:

Instead of downloading the vanilla version linked above, use LAV megamix (Download, Set-up Tutorial) to utilize the awesome thing called madVR, your chinese cartoons will never look better! The installer also gives you the choice to MPC-HC as well.

super secret addition: https://www.svp-team.com/wiki/Main_Page

this uses trickery to make videos play at your monitor's refresh rate for super smooth video. It has a special switch for direct integration with PotPlayer that for some reason the documentation isn't up to date on. So I'll tell you here and you can be one of the cool internet elite

simply install it with only these components, nothing else...
upload_2018-1-22_14-44-21.png

open it up and double click on the system tray icon, you wanna here and click application options
upload_2018-1-22_14-45-23.png

in here find main > setup > potplayer > native
it'll say false, change it to true
close SVP4 and potplayer too if it was open
then open svp4 back up and play a video with potplayer

you'll know if it's working if you highlight over the system tray icon and it says something like this

there is a paid 'Pro' version that will use VapourSynth instead of AviSynth but it's just a very slight increase in performance

download this version so you don't have to worry about addon signing and also potentially use older shit

Now, why wouldn't you just use Waterfox at this point? All the benefits of Firefox, but without the nuisances that come with it.

www.waterfoxproject.org
  • Disabled EME (doesn't work on 3rd party builds anyway)
  • Removed Pocket completely
  • Removed all telemetry/data collection being sent back to Mozilla
  • Disabled the 64-Bit NPAPI white-list so that the user can decide what plugins they can run (doesn't make sense for Mozilla to do this as most of their user base probably aren't technically proficient), but it's something Waterfox users are capable of handling.

mainly because waterfox is a buggy fucking mess right now and they have absolutely no clue how they're going to get their browser working with v57+ addons, there's been github and reddit discussions about it and a lot of shrugging of shoulders it's already obsolete and becoming moreso every day.

the only firefox fork even worth considering right now is Basilisk. It's made by the Pale Moon people and it runs really well, it's superior to Waterfox and Pale Moon in every way that matters. It has by far the most compatibility with addons than any other browser.

the problem?

despite being an extremely new browser, they're stubbornly foregoing implementing electrolysis. they're doing it to improve compatibility, but it's seriously not worth it. Without it, there's essentially no barrier that separates a website from the browser's user interface, and a new exploit could potentially reach into that user interface and do terrible shit to your computer. that's why the sandboxing is so important.

but on the plus side, they have a thumbdrive version of the browser that doesn't need a hacky 'portable launcher'. And it's still probably safer than any chromium browser not running with the spectre/meltdown security fix flags enabled that turn it into a laggy shitty bloated mess

but seriously just use firefox (developer edition)

Another piece of Software that I consider nearly essential after I began using it is VoiceMeeter. This is free.
https://www.vb-audio.com/index.htm

It allows you to digitally control audio channels independently. It is a must have for streaming/VOIP.
There are other mixer programs better suited for voice recording, but for general use and even hobbyist level recording, VoiceMeeter is hard to beat.

This is VoiceMeeter

There is a more intricate version known as VoiceMeeter Banana that gives you complete control with many more channels, but for simple ease of use, this is my daily.

this isn't free but it's one of the only programs of its kind and if you're interesting in mixing audio from different sources cleanly, it's certainly worth the meager $20 cost

basically you get to assign a sound device to each of your applications on an individual basis. so if you're streaming a game or something you can assign that game to one of your little voicemeeter mixer channels and wahlah

I remember there being a freeware equivalent somewhere but it was really buggy and shitty

If anyone needs a good WAMP stack (Windows, Apache, MySQL/MariaDB, PHP) get this:

https://www.apachefriends.org/index.html

XAMPP is idiotproof, comes with support for MacOS/Linux too, and if you are totally lazy and/or have no damn clue how to set up web software for localhost use or testing purposes, it even comes with support for Bitnami, which does all the hard stuff for you.

I use Opera for my browser. I prefer StartPage for my search engine. A lot less clunky than DDG
opera is shit and startpage is shit

just use DDG's !g bang if you need to search google so bad, it'll do an encrypted search that doesn't track you and if you have an adblocker won't give them revenue either

opera completely abandoned their unique and well-performing engine to chase after chromium and now that the chromium engine is getting royally hammered by firefox quantum so are they

it even supports spaces in the file path. it's really damn clean and smooth

the alternative, universal server i think it was, is shit.

Most of the stuff I'm gonna share is stuff most of you probably already have, but that means there are some of you that don't know about these.

SoulseekQt
Music sharing service. If you're looking for an album, chances are that you'll find it here.
I've used it, it's good. You can find some pretty rare shit on there, and with how hard the RIAA has cracked down on music torrents, even private trackers, it's one of the few good options left.

JDownloader 2
Download manager. Worth noting is that you can easily rip videos (or sound) from Youtube (and Pornhub) or even batch-download from anime streaming sites and manga hosts.
this is good but if you're going to link this at least link to the adware-free version jesus christ
http://nullrefer.com/?http://jdownloader.org/jdownloader2

MSI Afterburner
Good for setting custom fan curves and with RivaTuner you can have on-screen displays that show FPS and other metrics, take screenshots more easily (no fucking black screens) and generally just improve your gaming experience. It's made for overclockers but it works for everyone.
'no black screens'
there are still people who don't play every game in windowed borderless mode?

JPEGView
It's a good, lightweight image viewer. Customizable and better than the shit Windows comes with.
fucking garbage trash
https://www.bandisoft.com/honeyview/

Foobar2000
Music player. Lightweight and customizable beyond human comprehension.
definitely. and it's one of the few programs that can play vidja game music in its native formats so long as you get the proper plugins from their webzone
https://www.foobar2000.org/components (download the proper decoders as needed)
https://www.zophar.net/music

Paint.NET
Image editor. The simplicity of MSPaint with the utility of Photoshop.
for the life of me i cant figure out why people like this godawful fucking program. no, it doesn't have the utility of photoshop, not even fucking close. i don't even know where to begin in explaining how limited this software's capabilities are. stop dragging your knuckles and at least use something like GIMP.

OpenOffice
Microsoft Office but better and free.
possibly. but no company would ever use it because it is fucking plagued with security vulnerabilities, mostly thanks to the parts of it that are still in java.
just use MS Office because it could give you potential job experience, and there's also countless videos of lolcows telling you how to do advanced things in it

0xjqKce.png

Everyone should have a copy of this on their computer at all times.
Cmon, if you're going to do this at least link to da big boiz

DDG niggers need to learn to code better and git gud then lol

Opera is starting to get a little shitty, though. They fucked up their built-in VPN and now it's putting me in places like Ukraine, despite being the "Optimal" location.

they're doing pretty damn good considering they're well over a decade late to the webcrawling party. they also do index a lot of stuff that google already got DMCA'd over.

my only annoyance with them is if I surround a word with quotes it doesn't always give me results that have that word in it and that makes me want to commit hatecrimes

just use firefox. i don't like having to use it any more than you do but it's the only decent option right now. plenty of addons offer free nigger welfare proxies

Nerd Stuff

Vagrant
Pros

  • Spin up virtual machines like crazy.
  • Customize them easily to run local web servers or whatever and recreate them quickly using a script.
Cons
  • Finicky as shit sometimes after OS updates.

SpeedCrunch
Pros

  • It's a calculator.
Cons
  • Math is for gay nerds.
DroidEdit
Pros

  • Basically Notepad++ on Android. Text editor without any other bullshit.

Been playing around with ConEmu and Cmdr in Windows to help bring my usage of cmd+MSYS2+cygwin under control. Cmdr is a fork of ConEmu with extra, somewhat unnecessary features including an annoying tendency to pause when you move through git directories as it automatically checks the repository.

Speaking of forks I like to use KiTTY over the popular PuTTY, specifically because it came with the PuTTYcyg patch by default but these days cygwin uses the just fine mintty: http://www.9bis.net/kitty/

I also use Neovim over Vim because it's simply faster. YouCompleteMe is the best/fastest C++ completion plugin I've found, it does everything else too, but C++ is especially hard to do intelligent completion. I should mention that the Windows QT client is nice, and supports copy+paste clipboard stuff, you can drag files onto it, it doesn't feel like a weird POSIX hack: https://neovim.io/
