It's sad because Metal Sonic has all the groundwork for being a really interesting character. It just so rarely gets taken advantage of. A robot that's hard-wired to always think that he's the real Sonic and that the actual Sonic is a copy is interesting...but it rarely ever goes anywhere.
Now that there's Sage around, I wonder if Metal Sonic will be made even more irrelevant. In fact, early Eggman would have not made robot lackeys unless it's to torture them for fun (like Archie Eggman did). Sage's helping Sonic from time to time wouldn't be tolerated by classic Eggman, he would have zapped her or something, which I doubt it will happen these days.
By the way, the sequel to the DC crossover comic is coming soon, likely to be even more superfluous than the first one.

he's less hard wired to think he's the real sonic and more that in sonic heroes he let his baggage from being beaten by sonic a few times despite being supposedly "better" than him get to him which in his quest for more power eventually spiraled into the madness and delusion we see of the final boss of that game. Every other thing he shows up he just fucking is seething silently over being beat by the same guy he was literally built to be better than.
However him being similar to sonic in mindset is kind of an implied thing in some games and just outright full on a thing in the OVA because he's literally been completed using a brain scan of sonic in that and it eventually kind of comes to the forefront as the movie goes on.
idk, it seemed like they had something going in Heroes, but the execution at the finale went to shit IMO. Metal Sonic's form before the transformation was fine, he didn't need to go all "space alien lizard thingy" on Sonic and crew.
Like, he made all that effort to copy the "life forms" of the entire cast, and practically did nothing with them. Just imagine a Metal Sonic where he has Knuckle's strength while using Shadow's Chaos Control as he shoots you with bullets coming out of his arms like Omega.

The final boss alien lizard thing is technically a combo of all the data he's copied for the final fight.
I think the "inexplicably becoming a giant monster" is one of the weirder metal sonic abilities that came out of nowhere and has never really been explained beyond the "data copied" shit in heroes despite it literally happening a few games before too.
Also the cutscenes weirdly seem to play out of order in this bossfight and it's something that's always stuck with me whenever I see it. It shows a beat up metal sonic escaping with robotnik and then jump cuts to you fighting the massive metal sonic.
I guess the implication is he charges him up with the ring offscreen but it's odd.

Considering Metal Sonic obliterates everything in the bad ending where you don't have all the chaos rings, it's safe to assume that by the time you knock him down a peg, Robotnik wound up getting the other rings and gave them to Metal. So he's practically invincible by that point. So in the good ending, since you have all the rings, he can't turn big and red again.
Tangle and Whisper are clearly being pushed for playable character status. It's possible for Sonic to actually reference the former in Frontiers in the right circumstance.

Because IDW Sonic has no cool male characters other than a try hard villain, two mooks, an ugly mobster, and a second rate Tails abused by his older sister stand-in from time to time. Just what boys reading the comic (if any) would like, right? Sure, there's the regular Sonic cast of the games, but you would have expected someone meant for the new readers.
