Sony forces Japanese developers to censor sexual content - For Japanese audiences too.

I honestly don't think this has anything to do with sjws or gamergate shit and everything to do with Sony wanting those sweet sweet China shekels.

People actually thought that? Of course it's for China: They're the largest gaming market on Earth and literally right next door. Japanese publishers have never marketed to SJWs and even the SJWs know it, which is why they spend all of their time screaming at Western game developers because they know the Japanese won't even acknowledge them.

Reminds me of Japan adopting puritanical laws to appear "civilized" to the Victorian Western world around the start of the 20th century, when they were modernizing.

[something something history repeating]

On a side note, I think the modern obscenity law came from that time. Nowadays that law is interpreted as "you can't distribute anything depicting uncensored genitalia," hence the (in)famous and ubiquitous mosaic censorship in Japanese porn.

Japan actually adopted puritanical laws to resist western culture. The Chinese were the ones interested in destroying and censoring their own culture to appear more western but they'd been anti-porn for millennia anyway.

I must've been misinformed then. Was this around the time Japan was modernizing?

The 19th century was actually an extremely pornographic period of time. The issue is that this stuff wasn't preserved.

From the USA to France and even Russia there was printed porn widely available for both the common man, capitalist and aristocrat. The average soldier in the US Civil War had access to pornographic fiction, woodcuttings, photos and even drawings. The British aristocracy were viewed as a bunch of degenerate sex fiends because modern art was porn and they even had monthly porn magazines in circulation. There was even a dedicated street in London for pornography. France... well France was France.

The whole idea of the Meiji restoration was the idea that Japans superior culture would be preserved by adopting western style institutions and technology. They kinda lapsed into western culture in the 1920s but there was a pretty strong reaction to that in the 1930s.

Did a quick search on this and they passed the 1869 anti-porn/anti-democracy law as a copyright law. Spooky.

Both China and Taiwan banned martial arts films because they were viewed as superstitious and counterproductive to their modernization efforts.

A very odd country.

I think copyright law started because of censorship in the first place. The printing press worried the British monarchy, so they gave a Stationers Guild the exclusive right to copy books. That led to modern copyright law with the Statute of Anne.

It's a historical and current trend: whenever a technology is introduced that allows rapid spread of ideas and free expression, people in power may not exactly like it.

Sony censorship-related crosspost from the Billy D thread
I'd like to remind everyone that there was a Gayfaqs/KIA rumor about Sony banning all VNs that was so autistic that even Mr. William "Soy of War" Usher himself was willing to call out their bullshit. Getting called an alarmist assclown by Billy D is like losing a wrestling match to Ricky Berwick

My prediction is that's it's an "all of the above" answer. Sony wants these devs to make "universal" builds of these games so they can please Western leftists, prudish Japanese politicians, and censorship-happy countries like China and Saudi all at once in a crude attempt at maximizing their profits

They're going to have to take out all the fairies and troon shit to satisfy the Saudis.

A worthless endeavor, even if they manage to sell consoles with impunity China still have a draconian way of rating and approving games, unless that system is gone that shit is not going to fly and lord gaben will still have his grip there, it sucks being a console peasant in china

That doesn't seem to make that much sense to me though, when China virtually allows companies to steal others work and repurpose it under their own name. Marketing to them is basically asking for you to have your ideas stolen by a Chinese company and resold.

The Chinese government adheres to the logic of "rules for thee, but not for me" when it comes to international trade, hence why shit like borderline piracy is ay-okay to them, but Winnie the Pooh has to be censored in KH3 over there. Regardless, it's still money, Niggerbusters '16 probably would've succeeded if China was given it
