That's something that's been going on for a long time. Even pre-gamergate I saw people pointing out that progressives hate people and groups they should be allies with like MRAs, and find themselves allied with people they should hate like conservative Christians. But their biggest ally is the biggest head scratcher, radical Islam. Why would feminists who oppose the patriarchy and believe in equal rights for women be allies with a group that thinks men should rule and women are worth less than half of a man?

One reason is porn. All these groups want women to cover up. Their reasons differ but the end goal is the same. I don't buy that is enough of a reason to support groups that are against you in every other way, but then I'm not a feminist.

I didn't answer this before but I might as well now since we're talking about it. It's not hard, in fact it's easier than ever with automatic lockouts.

I forget who said it, but the answer for why they don't want the option is because (and I'm paraphrasing here) "it would negate the point of censorship.". All the arguments about protecting the children or the women or any other group is bullshit and they admit as much when pressed. The goal is that you can't have what they don't approve of. I once saw a guy in a comments section kept bringing up old games like Dead or Alive Xtreme Volleyball. When pressed, he said that games won't be acceptable in the eyes of feminism until DoA doesn't exist any more. He didn't say if the old copies should be destroyed, but I can't think of any way to make a game not-exist any more.

Finally, the lack of bite. One thing about social justice is they assume that they are the counter culture, rebels that are sticking it to the man, man. But they are the establishment. Having a gay or black character is not revolutionary, it's old hat.

The only thing funnier than censorship is when devs purposefully design characters to be unappealing to the fanservice oriented male audience, but instead it backfires as they end up pandering to various fetishes. If my lore is correct, in Overwatch they turned Tracer into a lesbian for the sake of pandering to homosexual players, only for the yuri-fandom to rejoice the loudest. Zarya's whole raison d'être, IIRC that is, was ment solely to virtue signal for muh diversity only for muscle girl fetishists to high five each other.

Yes and no.

It is bullshit that people read every little design choice as pandering to a specific fetish. eg. Hitman is not fetish material for women who like gloves, suits, and bald dudes.

But artists (at least in my experience) do design characters to appeal to their fetishes. If an artist has a stocking fetish, you can bet that as many sexy characters as possible will have them as part of their outfit. I think the most famous example is Wonder Woman. Made to be a female role model for girls, but every other comic had her getting tied up. I vaguely remember some leak on an adulter dating site years ago and some game devs were part of the leaked data. One of which was revealed to have some fetish or another and suddenly his design choices became clear.

So, was Zarya designed to appeal to muscle fetishists? Probably not, because it was made as an author insert and was pandering to Tumblr. Was Tracer and Widowmaker designed to appeal to someone who loves women with accents, full body spandex, and arses? I don't know, but it wouldn't surprise me.

They should have a system like this instead of trying to force developers to censor their games.

I'm of the opinion that children should be free to lookup whatever media but this is a good way to get the parents to shutup and still buy while also getting the people their lewds.

Of course, they can't really renege this. They've already burned the bridges with all of their devs by forcing them to cancel or completely change their projects just before release and by just treating them poorly in general. Hopefully we see these Japanese devs flood Steam.
