The ESRB (or PEGI, or CERO) excuses are just an attempt to point fingers. Many of the games being censored are teen rated (like Senran Kagura) which makes sense when these games often aren't that violent and are the game equivalent of Baywatch.

Sony and Nintendo already have a blanket policy of no AO rated games on their systems, but these games wouldn't fall foul of that so they need this extra layer of censorship to stop them.

The federal government regulated and censored films under the Hays Code until it was found unconstitutional in the 1970s. Now film is regulated via corporate entities like the MPAA.

The ESRB was created because there was a genuine concern that the government would step in to regulate videogames like they had with film. Videogames didn't have the same respect as film in the 1990s so it was possible and people still don't respect them so it still is possible.

Love it or hate it, the ESRB is probably a good idea. The ESRB doesn't actually stop the games from going on sale - it has no power.

Might have been a localizer. This was back during GG, so I doubt I can find it. A lot of dirty laundry aired back then and I was naive enough not to archive. That said TakeTwo has been scummy for years so I'm inclined to believe it.

Though, like it’s been said numerous times in here, it seems like western devs in general are being “kidgloved” way more by censorship than nips. Can you really imagine a game like Witcher being allowed to be released by a lower-end Japanese studio even prior to the Sony censorship?

My issue is that it’s now starting to bleed into AAA games like DMC5. Even with Trish butt being uncensored, Lady’s is still censored on all platforms in the west. It’s not a big deal, DMC is still wacky fun, but it’s just weird given that what they’re censoring is network television tier-“indecency” on a game made for adults with an entirely adult cast of characters

Since Sony moved over to America, I would only expect bland 3rd person cinematic action game from them as well as including unnecessary politics.

I mean I like Uncharted and Spidey looks neat, but I also like my variety, I’d prefer to have a variety of exclusives as opposed just TLOU and “TLOU set in ancient Scandinavia”
