Sony also claims that Spider-Man 2 is profitable, but the leaks say otherwise...
Eh, ten million copies of a $70 game is probably a bit over or at least closing the gap. The issue, unlike the first game, is that Sony still can't get consoles into the hands of people who want to buy the game fast enough. Install bases between the PS4 and PS5 couldn't be more different.

But it still isn't making a profit for the PS5 console

One last point, the sell-through of FF7 Rebirth is the same as last week which means both things:
- Stores still have plenty of copies from the initial shipment
- There are >70k retail copies rotting away in the shelves
Discounts should be expected fairly soon.

I stopped by Walmart and wondered over by the games section while I waited on a prescription to get filled and saw that the FFVII Rebirth SKU had at least 6 or 7 copies in it, yet the new WWE game only had a couple copies left on PS4 and PS5. Why aren't people buying this game? Is it because most people didn't like the changes they made to the story in the last game? Is it because most people just said "I'll wait until they finish the whole trilogy and then play the games"? Is it because people don't like how the newer FF games are real time instead of turn based? Is it because Final Fantasy as a franchise is way past it's prime and releavance? Is it a combination of all the above?

I don't believe they will make a PS5 Pro.

PS4 Pro did not do well and made games cost more to make. The market wasn't there for an even more expensive mid gen upgrade in the best economy in my lifetime; it isn't there in this economy.
On the other hand, Sony is arrogant enough to do it.

Because of all of the above plus it's shit.

PS4 was sold at a profit,
https://www.ign.com/articles/2014/05/23/ps4-already-profitable-for-sony “From a profitability perspective, PS4 is also already contributing profit on a hardware unit basis, establishing a very different business framework from that of previous platform businesses," Hirai said.
Sorry for coming back to this, but I just realized that Sony claimed their console was already profitable less than a year after launch.

But then that Black Friday, literally bundled it with free copies of The Last of Us Remastered and GTA V. (and maybe even other third party titles, as I got Call of Duty Advanced Warfare with my bundle as well, but can't remember if that was Amazon bundling it on top or not)

It was the fabled Black Friday Bundurur that basically cemented their number one position for the generation, and there's no way you can convince me that bundle itself was profitable for them.

Is it a combination of all the above?
I think it's this.

I've said for a while Final Fantasy has lost it's relevance as a Sony system seller. The average Playstation player wants a sports game and a movie game, not a JRPG/Action JRPG/Whatever FF is now.

Looking beyond that, I have to wonder who the fuck wanted FFVII Rebirth as well. The people that wanted a FFVII remake probably felt burned as Remake...wasn't a remake. The people that like new Final Fantasy probably don't have the reverence for a FF game that, quite possibly, came out before they were even born.

Edit: I am speaking for the West, of course, but from what I'm hearing the same holds true for Japan except they don't want Sport and Movie games along with whatever FF is now.

You're right. People (including me) wanted an actual remake and when they got a bait and Switch, they said "Fuck it. I'm not getting the next one, this sucked". Square have only themselves to blame.

I think you're right though. The FF audience has moved to the Switch. It will be interesting to see where FF17 ends up.

Would be nice if they could make smaller-tier FF games like back on the Wii. Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers wasn't exactly amazing, but it was pretty unique and took advantage of the Wii remote.

Well, as a person who freakin' loved Final Fantasy as a child and has always kept an eye on it, here are my anecdotes:
  • The whole damn series started falling apart once the PS2 rolled around. Final Fantasy IX may as well have been the swan song, as far as I'm concerned. Final Fantasy X was okay, but not even remotely as compelling as the best SNES and PlayStation entries.
  • Final Fantasy XV was the newest mainline entry I've tried, and it was a weird boy band simulator. FF6 has always been my favorite, and I swear, even Fallout 4 has more in common with that game.
  • Final Fantasy VII Remake was just... not great. The most enjoyment I got was getting to see familiar environments in full realistic 3D. The battle system is an obnoxious mess, and any content I didn't get nostalgia for was just middling at best. If it weren't a Final Fantasy VII game, I'd have absolutely no interest whatsoever.
  • FFVII Rebirth is a PlayStation 5 exclusive. That is a $500 console, and the game is $70. We're also going through a point in time where money's tight for everyone, and while I could come up with $570 in case of a serious emergency, I am not spending that much money on any kind of frivolity. Plus, I bought a nice computer and a Steam Deck a couple of years ago, so I'm pretty well established on PC from here on out.
  • Sony's pretty woke, so it wouldn't make me feel great about giving them any more money.
  • I've also never had a single PlayStation console make it all the way through a generation without something going wrong. My PS4's disc drive started activating by itself, so I figured I'd repair it sooner or later, only to shelf it and give up on the platform. I haven't been happy with the PS4 as-is anyway. I already had one hard drive wipe (that erased all my saves, AND MY FUCKING COPY OF P.T., THANKS ASSHOLES), so I'm not too eager to add more problems to my life.
  • Oh, and the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters are overpriced as hell and don't include all the fun extras from the 2000s rereleases. I pirated FF6's remaster just to see how it is, and somehow, it has obscenely long loading times when you start it up. How is that even possible? The original SNES ROM is 4 megabytes!
But it's a series I was wild about when I was a kid, and that's why I still pay it mind. Even though it's been borderline universally terrible for nearly a quarter of a century. It must really speak volumes as to how good FF6 was if I'm still giving this horrible series, made by horrible people, exclusive to a horrible platform my attention to this day.

Final Fantasy X was okay, but not even remotely as compelling as the best SNES and PlayStation entries.
Don't most hardcore Final Fantasy and JRPG fans put this one at or near the top? It got a sequel, remasters, soundtrack is incredible. The world is probably the most unique out of all Final Fantasy settings as well. I'm looking at a dozen lists on various sites and social media posts and a bunch refer to FFX as the peak of the series.

It’s one of those games that’ll really kick your nostalgia up if you played it at the right age, or if it was your first RPG. That is my own personal opinion. I have never completed Final Fantasy X. I got near the end and just never cared to finish it.

It's the last good one. The series has been objectively terrible since, including that fucking sequel where you''re a J-Pop idol. Retarded.

Sakaguchi leaving was the death knell for Square.

It's a tad divisive. FFF6-9 are basically unanimously loved, but 10 rubbed some people the wrong way, and despite it being my favorite it's understandable. There's legitimate reasons, like having no traditional overworld and having a stronger focus on romance than any game since FF4 (which used it more as a plot device than an emotionally resonant love story).

But the only criticism that irks me is the infamous Tidus laugh that's memed on, which made a lot of people hate him. It's the single most misunderstood scene in all of gaming and is often cited even by fans as one of the worst parts of the game, but it's actually really good.

No need to force yourself but if you haven't tried replaying it via the HD remasters I'd recommend that. The new soundtrack is somehow better than the original, which was already legendary. I think it's one of those games you could go back to after seeing the current state of JRPGs and find more to like.

The j-pop sequel was a curveball and an objectively bad direction to take the game in, and it was Square's first game published as Square-Enix and so it really set the tone for their fuck ups going forward.

Still, if you play it for what it is and don't take it too seriously I think it's still really good. What's arguably more of a problem than the direction the game took is the true ending, I like it personally but the "bad" ending might be better thematically.

FFX was the last good one but also the start of the decline
FF16 has pretty much finished off the series, now that all the console warriors stopped caring because it's getting ported and the hypepigs moved on to the next shiny thing it's being slowly accepted that it was a mediocre game at best.
It would take multiple good FF games in a row to bring the franchise back into the limelight and they dont have the desire to make games people actually want
FF7 remake should have been their "In case of emergency, break this out for guaranteed success" move and they even fucked that up
