LLMs and (near?) real-time text-to-speech can be used to make NPCs with dynamic conversations. You can find demos of this. Other structured data like quest lines could also be generated by LLMs. Yeah, this could all suck, but it could be cool if it works.
When has a cool technology turned out to be cool? We know that this LLM will be used to monitor speech.
No way will I be able to say to the darky female blacksmith "make me a better sword you fucking nigger bitch" without getting banned immediately from PSN and my bank.
It sounds like 8-10 GB is the minimum amount of RAM you would want to set aside for these AI/LLM functions, on top of around 24-32 GB for everything else, up from 16 GB of the current generation. So that's how you get estimates like 36-40 GB. Using LPDDR5X, it won't be as expensive as GDDR6 used to be.

If a developer doesn't use AI, they get free RAM to use elsewhere. No developer is going to say no to 36... 40... 48 GB of RAM instead of 24 GB, which would be the absolute minimum cheap-out route you could predict for next-gen.
Would have been very cool in the 90s or early 2000's when devs could make games. Except, these days, it will be used for more adverts. spying, shite writing and overly-bloated, indianfied slop.

Maybe I'm just jaded.

You know as well as I do that extra RAM will be locked out to the dev since it'll be built into the OS, like the worthless Hypervisor the Xbox One had or that stupid PS3 logo that shown before each game and Naughty Dog had to beg Sony to remove.

You are very jaded, not that there's anything wrong with that.

I'm mostly interested from an academic perspective and because whatever goes in the consoles determines the direction of PC gaming and DIY/OEM hardware in general for 8-10 years. I wouldn't buy a Sony device unless it was fully jailbroken for use as a cost-competitive general purpose PC. I think hacking interest could be higher next time around because of the handheld.

I don't really play new games on PC either, but I still want to see what a fully AI/procedural open world RPG could look like (inb4 Daggerfall). Skyrim, even with Very Special Legendary coats of paint, is a game designed to run on the Xbox 360's 512 MB of RAM.

I don't know that. PS5 has 512 MB DDR4 as SSD cache, and some small amount of the main 16 GB of GDDR6 memory used by the OS. The PS5 Pro uses 2 GB DDR5 for cache and system. I don't think the PS6 OS is going to consoom much more than 2-4 GB of the RAM budget.

I would be wrong about AI RAM if Sony put in some separate XDNA NPU with its own dedicated memory that couldn't be used by anything else, kind of like the XSX/XSS's weird partitioning of slower memory. I don't think that will happen, but they'll get whatever they want out of AMD.

Imagine the real time animation of Aloy's chest hair...

Thought the same thing. All this investment into higher-end performance and graphics, and they'll just use it all on making Aloy even uglier than she already is? What's the point?

I agree with you, I want to see it. I want to see the best coders using the best tools on the best hardware push the boundaries of possibility. The last time it happened was 20 years ago. 20!!

Half life 2, Bad Company, Crysis. What a leap in computer games. Since then, fuck all. MTX, DLC, spyware, always online. I hate it all.

7800X3D is massively more powerful than the CPU in the PS5 pro, which is equivalent to an r5 3600 too
The PS5 and Pro's CPUs are equivalent to a 3700X. They're 8 core Zen 2s with decent cooling and boost clock capabilities. The only real problem with the PS5 CPU-wise is that it came out slightly too early to be Zen 3 instead which would have done a lot to ameliorate CPU bottlenecks on the console.

You don’t want to see… le gasp… LOADING SCREENS do you???
I wouldn't mind them if they did interesting things with them. Tekken 1 on the PS1 had you play Galaga while you waited. Bayonetta 1 had you dick around with her practicing move combos and shit.

You'd think there would be more of those things to keep the player entertained so they aren't staring at a screen for so long, but nope. Either that, or just optimize/program the game better so there's as little loading as possible.

I will forever hate Namco for patenting the idea of playing a minigame on loading screens. You know why so many games go the Bayonetta route of having you practice combos? Because they’re not legally allowed to do anything more interesting. One of the Crash Bandicoot games (I think it was 3) even had an unused loading screen minigame that got dummied out because they found out they weren’t allowed to use it.

Honorable mention goes to Splatoon 1, which at least had a few minigames you could play on the gamepad while waiting for online matchmaking to finish.

they’re gimped zen 2 so the performance is worse than a 3700x

come home from work- put the metal gear delta disc*
40 mins of waiting time between the shit installing and the game updating itself.

gta 6 will be the last game i ever play on a fucking console ever again

That was me in 2018, but with red dead 2 and ps4. Because i couldn’t just buy a disc and insert it into the system to just play a damn game. That is what killed future playstation and xbox consoles for me.

Great game but terrible idea for console manufactures to require installation of games from disc.

I will gladly take hour long game installs over the Switch 2 cartridge shit where 90% of games aren't on the cartridge and the cartridges with games on them are rather slow.
But I understand hating both options and the anti-christ and so forth.

They’re both functionally the same to anyone with an internet connection, so they’re both equally bad to me. At least Switch 2 devs have the option to just put the whole game on the cartridge and let people play off that as opposed to having an arbitrary system-wide mandate.

You know what happens when I insert a 20 year old disc into my PC? I can just play it anytime I want, after a short one-time install. No updates, no bullshit, I just play the game.
The whole point of a console is accessibility, imagine having to spend 40 minutes installing the game on your console and then another 40 installing mandatory updates, then getting kicked off the game when you finally get to play because it requires an internet connection to play.
lol, lmao even

Was it ever mandated, or was it just that the read speeds were so slow that even the cheaped-out hdds had to be used to stream data through?

Like I remember stupidly getting the download copy of GTA5 on PS3, and that game when played from a disc used a mix to get data from, and downloaded players could get fucked with all the pop-in.

letting the console on suspension mode so it can do all its shit when you are at work its cool ngl
I can jack off to porn, browse the farms or play another game altogether on my PC when the game is installing, something I am sure you can't do on consoles. What's your point, you still shouldn't need to install anything from a disc based game, nor should you be required to download mandatory updates. There is zero need for any of that, that's the whole appeal of consoles: plug and play, not plug and wait.

I got GTA 5 on my 360 I downloaded digitally, and yeah it is pretty fucking bad. I know it's much better when you play the game with a disc.
