It does of course depend on context/atmosphere and such, and that does sound like the most appropriate possible student-teacher situation for the suffix! No, it was a woman. I didn't really consider it derogatory although I'm pretty sure it should have been -San, I think she was just attached to her students and treated us more as a little family, almost. A ways through the course some more students joined the class and she really used to mother us all a bit, making us little care packages and such. She was a sweetie!
My mind kind of just immediately jumped to the Japanese men my dad does business with, who refer to my dad and his male coworkers as (last name)-san but to female employees as (first name)-chan because they're women and don't deserve as much respect obviously.
