Stable Diffusion, NovelAI, Machine Learning Art - AI art generation discussion and image dump

I never get tired of throwing random screenshots of old video game crap at qwen edit and make it redraw it:

Let's take this random Deus Ex screenshot i found on image search:

deusex.png

Let's qwen edit rework it into a pencil sketch, turn the character around a little, and remove everything except the character:

deusex_pencil.jpg
This is not terrible but also just kinda accurate and looks a bit low-poly. To be entirely fair, the texture of the original model doesn't give you a lot to work with, especially the arms are really funky on the original mesh. So let's give Anna Navarre a small cybernetic upgrade. We feed this image back into qwen, photoshop the eye implant clumsily from the original screenshot as the generation's one is a bit wonky. Find some better looking arms from screenshots from that cyberpunk game and photoshop them roughly where they should go, also push the image around a little with the smudge tool to go back into the original pose some more and then use both images to generate the next:

deusex_pencil2.jpg
(I wasn't investing the effort to make that smudging well so the boobs are a bit fucky. The eye implant also is because the source material just isn't that good and would require a bit assisting to make look better, which I also didn't do. The original mesh from the game doesn't even have any ears! This took me an embarassing amount of time to figure out. Qwen helpfully added some and that's what mainly makes the face look different. Funny anecdote: I first thought qwen put big boobs on the character for some reason, then I realized Deus Ex was from 2000 and women were still allowed to have big boobs in videogames)

It really is that simple. And this was almost zero effort for anybody just slightly computer and photoshop (but really GIMP) literate. If you really wanted to go the extra miles you could go places. Use long workflows with different models etc.. Sky's the limit, really.

The next one I won't post because it might dox me is something I doodled on my Amiga. I'm not an artist but I like doodling pixel art sometimes and that computer is just very approachable for it and it's fun to use the old machine here and there. When I draw characters I mostly focus on the face or landscape behind them, then get bored and draw some colored blobs in the empty spaces and promise myself I'll finish this later, and never do (As a result I got really good at faces consisting of relatively few pixels, think wing commander, and really poor at everything else). On a whim, I took a blurry picture of my Amiga screen with editor program (Brilliance 2.0, those who know, know) with one of my drawings open with my old smartphone and fed that picture into qwen edit, telling it to finish the picture. And it did. It wasn't a great finish but it was very interesting how it kept the quality of "shitty smartphone picture of pixel art on computer screen" and nothing looked edited our out of place. Might've been the original picture I've taken, really. We're really slowly kinda through the looking glass on what places this stuff will take us, aren't we? If you offer me a tired smile while I say this please remember I am from a time where it was impressive a computer could display 64 different colors at once. Thank you.

The best case scenario is that a lot of users who generated content which Civitai classifies as NSFW basically for free by expending blue Buzz will just stop posting, freeing up system resources and bandwidth for other tasks.
Not gonna lie, the biggest thing that annoyed me for the past two years was uploading LoRAs and having it fail 95% of the time; creating a showcase gallery was also irritating when a picture would get stuck and I'd have to refresh. Didn't notice that happening when I did a test upload.
Its bullshit, plus they did it out of nowhere, some popular niggas had tons of blue buzz and now cant do shit, didnt give them a grace period or anything
Some Reddit comment I read somewhere pondered that if advance notice was given, the servers would be overworked from everyone trying to spend their buzz as quickly as possible.

They could have done shit like if you have 1k blue att you can still use that amount for nsfw and any blue you get after that its sfw only

Could do other things like a longer generation queue for free users and make you pay for instant gen like other sites do, there were tons of alternatives to this get-fucked scheme, now the site its fucking dead because a lot of people left out of spite and it sucks because despite the coomers it was a neat community and there were tons of resources to do cool stuff

Most of the internet is dead now, forums are gone, social media is just normalfag retards who cant use anything more complex than dalle, discord its full of troons and bots, the fuck are we supposed to go?

Pixai figured that out.
Yeah it takes fucking hours to generate anything there, and the UI is shit, the lora directory a fucking mess, its jank af but still in biz so it works for them
Kinda funny that the majority of the new image page is still just porn like it always was.
Used to be almost all porn but now theres more sfw cuz nsfw costs actual money to create, but check the likes theres barely anyone browsing anymore, traffic must have gone down a cliff

I don't really care about the timing honestly. There are times where it takes literal days but at the same time I don't need my gay furry diaper sex images within seconds, I can wait a few hours. Like a couple years ago it didn't exist, anything faster than 0 is good.

The lora search being dogshit is inexcusable though.

If Civitai didn't make this a sneak update, the entire server would collapse from overload as soon as the message was given. And they want the bankers to tolerate the NSFW? Once they discover you can simply reveal the hidden porn with a single switch flip, Civitai's gonna sweat trying to explain why "Timmy stole his dad's credit card to make prompts of Chun-Li naked and now the dad is asking for refunds".

So, how long till the site goes down because of people jumping ship? It's a miracle Tumblr survived after its own porn purge, albeit as a zombified, rotting carcass. Civitai surely won't have the same luck, because at least fandoms keep the leftovers of Tumblr around (and most Tumblr alternatives either were scams, given how easy it is to trick gooners, or else they ended up being just hubs for fandoms as well).

This doesn't surprise me at all. There are a disturbing number of deranged coomers on welfare and jeets who would rather spend hours making sockpuppet accounts and astroturfing likes instead of paying $10/month or generating locally. This group is a massive annoyance, taking up GPU resources, moderation time, and spamming popular galleries with low-effort shit in the hopes of getting a few buzz from likes. This change is pretty precisely targeted at this group, while letting people still demo the tools with SFW. Plus it gives some degree of verification that the people generating porn are 18+ (or at least can access a credit card).

Civitai themselves are to blame in this case, given they created the buzz system to be that exploitative.

Freeloaders and coomers will always go after loopholes, it didn't surprise me knowing they'd take desperate measures once they realized it's either that or operate at a loss.

Looks like the website is far more usable right now, given the usual suspects ragequit and it's kinda lulzy seeing them seethe on the Civitai subreddit.

I can’t stand seeing the sheer number of sloppa all over Civit AI. It’s not the horrors of the autistic fetish content that annoys me, I can begrudgingly give them some sliver of merit for the creativity and clever LoRA use. It’s the massive swaths of posts, the same image with only slight variations that grinds my gears, wastes of space and server bloat all for a crumb of buzz to do it again.

I thought they were but now I think civitai will survive, a shadow of its former self but still around

Many were using external generators anyway and civitai never cared much about content being posted or not since clearly they werent monetizing that or didnt care to

And jumping ship to where? all the other online generators are worse

Could have just turned everybody's blue buzz to yellow so when its gone thats it, they have to pay, but this bullshit was unnecessary
in the hopes of getting a few buzz from likes
Buzz from likes was capped at like 100 a day so it didnt matter if you got 4k likes you would only get 100 blue buzz which you couldnt transfer anyway

I hate this about Civitai's userbase (and AI slopmongers in general) the most. A lot of people just don't bother fixing their images with the combination of inpainting and photoshopping or using more advanced techniques in image generation, such as ControlNet, Regional Prompting and/or Segmentation. What ends up happening is that your one or two well crafted images are competing for visibility against a sea of similar looking futa horsecocks. It's r/K selection theory all over again. All this could be mitigated in the future if Civitai ever bothers revamping its image feed system in such a way that it discourages spamming. Better filtering & search tools would also help users finding the kind of content they like. Anyway, rant over.

100 blue buzz per day... per account. You'd see people so lazy they had username1, username2, username3, and so on all generating the same type of images and sockpuppet upvoting their own stuff. Occasionally you'd see people whining in the CivitAI subreddit when they got caught and banned for this.

Yeah this is just another step in closing the loopholes. Remember when they just had yellow buzz? It's the classic VC playbook - offer free stuff to users to get a critical mass of users, figure out a business plan to actually make money, and then taper off the free stuff and get rid of the freeloaders.

One of the positives is filtering the flood of futa.

You mean back before blue buzz existed? cuz after it doing that shit didnt matter, you got more free buzz for upvoting shit and following others anyway as blue buzz couldnt be transferred or exchanged at all

Gonna say it again: there were alternatives, civitai could have lowered the amount of free buzz, make it more dependent on generating shit others actually liked, then monetize that content, and do stuff like limit how much stuff you can generate every day per free user, make them queue for a slot like other sites do, instant gen for paid users only and shit like that

What they just did nuked 3/4 of their users, even the ones submitting models and loras

Is civitai dead? no, but its not going back to what it used to

Minor thing but was doing a bit of work with non-Stable Diffusion AIs at home and in the course of that, updated to ROCm 6.4 native on Windows (i.e. not WSL). Mainly out of curiosity I fired up ComfyUI and SDXL and Flux Dev and Flux Kontext and gave them both a go. I'd tried ROCm before on an earlier version but used Vulkan normally. I don't have formal numbers to compare but it has improved a lot. Anything like SDXL it tore through. Flux dev at 22GB size took a bit more but it could do it. ROCm 7 is out in preview for Windows which I didn't try but I see others are reporting further improvements over 6.4 again. Also, installing and running was pretty straightforward. Compared to the hassles I had with AMD and Windows for this stuff at the start, night and day. Pytorch 2.8 working straight out of the box.

Are we at the point where if you're serious about this you shouldn't buy Nvidia? No. But the jump from where we were to now, having not touched this stuff in a year, is very noticeable. If you're dual booting for the sake of having an AMD card you want to use, much less need than before. ROCm version for version on the two platforms, seems pretty similar.
