It's more complex than that. Seth left FOX after it got acquired by Disney (I don't think he wanted to work for the huwite slavers). He signed a deal with NBC. Does he owns The Orville entirely or was it co-produced by FOX?It's a shame he's content to put The Orville away after this season so he can do a "Ted" series that nobody wants.
They kind of did in the first season when Alara was put in charge of the ship after Mercer and his XO got captured and put in an alien zoo. While she wasn't ready for such big responsibilities, she never acted like a girlboss and didn't get her crew killed.The Orville would have taken a situation like this way more seriously.
