I mean, I never said I didn't enjoy his over-acting.I think the role of lead actor in Star Trek lends itself to a larger-than-life quality.
It’s no coincidence that Shatner, Stewart, Mulgrew and Brooks had experience in Shakespeare prior to trek. It comes off as overacting at times, but Shakespeare rarely calls for subtle, naturalistic portrayals. And how can you be subtle and naturalistic when you’re arguing with guys in Klingon makeup who do nothing but yell?
Fair enough, I am playing Devil's Advocate a little bit. I wont go so far as to justify pre-emptive strikes. Still, Real Politik and all, you can see why the Dominion felt war was inevitable and if it's inevitable, why they'd strike first.the dominion made no effort to remedy the situation with diplomacy. they let the alpha quadrant do whatever they wanted in their territory for like a year while they gathered intelligence/got goobacks into various institutions and then declared war. so yes they were encroaching but only out of ignorance and the dominon let the problem fester so they could get the upper hand in the war they were going to start regardless.
That explains a lot. I'm glad at least that Quark got his happy ending in that episode. This resulted from a massive disconnect between the writers (who wanted to make it more farcical) and the director/actor (who wanted to make it more grounded). The director (Siddig) and actor (Shimerman) were forced to reshoot it as a farce after they'd filmed it as a drama. That's why its tone is all over the place.
I think they missed an opportunity by having Gul Dukat get back up again to be the final villain. It would be much more effective imo if Kai Winn did successfully just bump him off. I feel that because it would be an excellent conclusion to Dukat's overweening arrogance to see him brought low like that. A bit like Sauron being brought down by Frodo at the end (only Frodo is evil too). I think it would resonate a lot with the audience for this Banality of Evil character to ultimately take the top spot. And I think Kai Winn has earned that place through just being so perfectly authentically ambitious through out the series.Kai Winn is one of my favorite villains in anything, I don’t think I have loathed a character quite as much as her. Somehow she would always weasel her way out of her actions, it was great. Louise Fletcher did a fantastic job portraying her.
Now obviously you can't have Sisko in a fist fight with Kai Winn. You'd have to come up with something different. But I'm okay with that because I feel Sisko going full Golum on Dukat at the end was a bit of a sudden cop-out anyway. Do some light show battle at the end, have Sisko read from the book to shut it down or summon the prophets or anything else, maybe the caves collapse on them both. All of this would be better. But the main thing is that I think Gul Dukat's end should be a look of surprise that he is brought down by someone he dismissed so arrogantly. And Kai Winn shouldn't get her "what have I done" realisation. She should be there up until the end clawing for power like the Nazi girl with the grail at the end of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Just an ordinary person who has set her quest for power above compassion and wisdom.
