What annoys a lot of people about Pulaski is that they tried recreating the Spock/McCoy dynamic with her and Data, but the difference is that Spock could hold his own and gave as good as he got back to McCoy. Data, not "getting" a lot of it didn't so it felt more like Pulaski was picking on the special needs kid.
Still, it definitely played a huge part in fleshing Data's character out to something more than a meatloaf made from scraps of Xon and Questor

A major difference was Spock was actually half human, so while he favored his Vulcan side, he had no real difficulty returning bants.

Remember that time Pulaski almost became Riker's stepmom?

How many other actors appeared in both TOS and TNG?

Somehow Tasha Yar is a beloved classic Star Trek TNG character and Pulaski went down the memory hole never to be referenced again. Laudable to include a female character who does nothing of note but get raped and killed, but I felt Pulaski was the stronger character nevertheless.

Pulaski gets a lot of hate for being the "replacement" but honestly on further viewings of S2 she grew on me and actually is a pretty decent and strong character in her own right.

And Yar owns, I'll fight you. Not every woman can woo Shooter McGavin.

I think the forced replacement of Crusher and insertion of Pulaski was the main sticking point over the fan rejection of her. If she would have been around from the beginning, or as an occasional recurring character, similar to Barclay, she would have been fine. Bev Crusher as a maternal/compassionate counter to the almost Vulcan-like logic and rigidity of Picard was a great part of TNG. Diana Muldar was older by the time of TNG, but in her TOS days, she could definitely get it! BmDsUllud77ex_vsOSzKLse0lMayvJhJ9TBs-5mQa60.jpg

As far as Denise Crosby, her stated reasons for leaving TNG (Little character development, lack of optimism about the future of the series/character) I can't say that I don't blame her for leaving, without the benefit of hindsight. It doesn't help that the first season of TNG was objectively bad, and even Patrick Stewart has said that when he took the job, he didn't unpack his belongings in his apartment until after the series was renewed because most of the cast and crew weren't even sure that it would last past the first season. However, bringing her back for "Yesterday's Enterprise" was great. I think it was one of the best TNG episodes, and a great character redemption. The later episodes with her as Sela were pretty decent as well.

Spock, Scotty, McCoy, Spock's dad.

Nurse Chapel was Troi's mom and the computer's voice.

Malachi Throne played Commodore Mendez in The Menagerie and Senator Pardek in Unification I and II. Carolyne Barry played The Metron in Arena and an unnamed Engineer in TNG episode Home Soil. Brian Tochi played Ray Tsing Tao in And the Children Shall Lead and then Ensign Lin in TNG’s Night Terrors. Gene Dynarski appeared in two TOS episodes as Ben Childress (Mudd’s Women) and Krodak (The Mark of Gideon) and then in TNG’s 11001001 as Commander Quinteros. Michael Pataki was Korax in TOS The Trouble with Tribbles and Karnas in TNG’s Too Short A Season. Joseph Ruskin was Galt in The Gamesters of Triskellion and then as one of the Son’a in the TNG movie Insurrection. Ned Romero played Krell in A Private Little War and Anthwara in Jorney’s End. (He also appeared as Chakotay’s grandfather in an episode of Voyager).

Now if we count the movies, Kirk appears in TNG: Generations. Then from Trek 2 there is Merritt Butrick appearing as David Marcus then as T’Jon in TNG Symbiosis which also had Judson Scott who was Joachim, Khan’s #1 guy.

That's about the most comprehensive list I can find.

EDIT: I almost forgot!

Michael Dorn was the Klingon lawyer in Undiscovered Country, the rare achievement of first appearing on TNG before a TOS property.

Established as the grandfather Worf was named after.

Brock Peters played Admiral Cartwright and then appeared in DS9, if that counts. Of course, then we get to also include the actors for Kang, Kor, and Kodos. And Rene Auberjonois.
Don't forget Kurtwood Smith.

Oh and we can't forget Tim Russ.
  • Trek 6
  • TNG
  • DS9
  • VOY
I Think he may hold the record for series and eras.

I never understood the fandom's fixation of Yar. She didn't even last a full season.
Then I went through puberty. I saw her nudes. I had a girlfriend that looked like her in high school.
I see Tasha differently now, needless to say. It's a shame she left the show. I would have rather seen Wesley or Troi killed off.

I was gonna say Tim Russ is often forgotten other than his role as Tuvok, but he is in quite a few series as well. IIRC Michael Dorn has the record for most Trek appearances overall as Worf over multiple series, mainly TNG and DS9 of course. And I absolutely love that Mark Lenard reprised his role as Serak, Spock father across TOS shows, movies and a few excellent TNG episodes.

I would rather see Wesley killed off every episode, South Park style. Troi was a useless character

I was going to agree until you said this part. JJ Trek is NOT a good entry point for Good Star Trek. Quality aside, it creates all kinds of wrong expectations when watching old stuff. Star Trek is frenetic action? No. Star Trek characters shout at each other? Very rarely. Technology looks like the Apple store? Not really.
JJ Trek doesn't even have a Nazi planet, a mobster planet, or an Alice in Wonderland planet.

The only thing I remember about Tasha Yar is the fact that she talked about the rape gangs in her home planet about 10 times per episode.

Encounter at Far Point: Do not judge us by our past for we have risen beyond our base savagery and are now enlightened explorers and seekers of knowledge.
Very next episode: I was five when I learned to evade the rape gangs.

You see, Tasha Yar's planet didn't accept the tenets of the Federation Utopia so they had to be punished. The people of the Alpha quadrant have two choices: Become a Federation NPC or have your planet over run with rape gangs. The only difference between the UFP and the Borg is that the Borg don't smile when they assimilate you.
