Speaking about Khan, what happened to the Khan character in SNW? Was she just nostalgia-bait?
She's still there, and gaining weight. Unfortunately SNW isn't getting any seasons after the short season 4 so we won't get Tilly-level gainer kino.

She's still fine, but it's funny how much these new Star Trek shows shy away from showing below the midsection of a lot of the female cast. In the last episode there was a shot of Otega from behind walking out of a room and it's like, "wow, big ass."

In Discovery that was terrible. They really frame shots around how chunky some of the woman actually were and then every now and then. Boom.

Whoever invented this idea that black women with buzzcuts look good should be shot. Either grow an afro and go for the Pam Grier look or fuck off.

For all the sins of JJtrek, they were at least attempting to be entertaining in spots. Sure they were low-brow action schlock, but at least they didn't make half the cast obese and ugly and talk like teenagers.

Like, even the aesthetic stuff that's nearly identical is still slightly better in the kelvin material. That's how bad it's gotten.

And JJTrek isn't even that. Abrams admitted he was more a Star Wars fan when he got the Trek gig. Its obvious the Trek movies were his test to qualify for doing Star Wars (which he ironically failed at.)
Hell, the the first abrams trek film is pretty much a beat for beat retelling of A New Hope.

Since Starfleet Academy has Paul Giamatti as part of the supporting cast, they could do something fun and have him play as a holographic John Adams. Maybe even beside his alien character.

But that kind of fun can’t be had in this very serious show of technobabble and Tilly-sized humanoids.

Uh... the Bell Riots, sir.
Bell riots were set in the 2020s while the show was in the 90s, thus avoiding currentyear shenanigans

From story elements and "twists" that have drifted down to me against my will from PIC and SNW not to mention my own existential pessimism regarding this franchise, I have a really fucking bad feeling that kurtzman is quietly planning an entire currentyear trek series based on the eugenics wars, with PIC's godawful season 2 being a test run

That maybe because of a better budget. The Kelvin stuff did look better, especially the glimpse we get of the prime universe prior to the timeline changes. The Kelvin itself looked appropriate, the bridge was modernized but not without its charm and the classic noises, we don't see much of the communicator but it appears to be inline with TOS sensibilities. The Pajeet captain sucked but atleast he died right away.

Yeah and its full of plotholes and stupid shit. I'll admit though the opening act is top notch and manages to feel like a space epic in the right ways. That 15 minutes is the best of the whole JJtrek to be honest.

I wouldn't worry about (((Kurtzman))) making anymore Star Trek with Skydance now owning Paramount and promising no more DEI bullshit. Starfleet Academy will be the last Star Trek that little jew rat will be making. It's not like he could write a show without any DEI.

I wish I shared your optimism. Even if you strip all the DEI stuff out of nu-Trek, the problem is that the base writing just isn’t there any more. It’ll still be dumb schlock, just with less girlboss kweens and diversity hires. The central plot points have all been ass.

I just don’t think the kind of writers that created the original Trek exist in Hollywood any more.

I always think back to that Ron Moore quote about technobabble being "the easiest card" to play, because writers are people, and most people are lazy and just want to go lie down. Today, the easy mode is just self-referential humor.

This of course is with the very optimistic assumption that some brand new fuckin consultancy induced gimmick will not be crowbarred in and dialled up to a thousand as part of a wider attempt to brute force said gimmick into becoming currentyear norm the way wokeshit/DEI was until recently

As for what such a gimmick would be, I cannot say for sure.....but I have some real fuckin bleak suspicions based on my schizophrenic reading of social/cultural gimmicks used to prop up execrable garbage in media (and everything fucking else for that matter) over the past couple decades and what I have noticed hit something of an uptick in terms of projects announced and shit being pushed by algorithms. I don't want to call it just yet, as I am fully aware I am sounding like some nigga convinced that the antichrist is coming because of the patterns he sees in cereal packet design here, but if you want a clue where I genuinely fear shit might be headed then I will postulate that The Boys might one day seen in a similar light to The Big Bang Theory. Not as one of the last unfunny canned laughter sitcoms of the late 00s, but as a harbinger for a cultural fucking nightmare to come.

If I am right....and I really fucking hope I aint....then when the time comes that this shit manifests in Star Trek we may learn to miss the days of Michael Burnham

Speaking of, it is amusing to look at the conversation at the start of this thread and see people shitting on both Voyager and Enterprise. 12 years later and they are remembered with fondness compared to nu-Trek. Same as it ever was, same as it ever was…

I mean Enterprise and Voyager always had enjoyable parts to them, it was just overshadowed by the bad. Stuff like that can be looked back on fondly eventually because the further you get away from it, the more the good moments stand out amongst the lackluster stuff. It's what sticks with you and you can appreciate it more in hindsight (along with comparing it to something worse).

The new stuff, however, is just nothing but liquid AIDS being poured into your eyes and ears from start to end. There are no gems hidden away, like Shran in ENT or the Sulu flashback episode in VOY. No, now it's all dogshit. We've reached the trash event horizon. No matter how much worse things get, what we have now is still worthless and will not be looked back on fondly. It's like comparing a shit that made you bleed out of your ass with a shit that prolapsed your asshole. Yeah, one is worse, but that doesn't make the other one underrated or inspire nostalgia.

Look at Star Wars. It's been 10 years since The Force Awakens, and no amount of garbage Disney shows or bad sequels since ever made that movie anything other than a shallow memberberry mystery box waste of time with no answer. It's a dry well, and people still admit that it was shallow garbage even after everything became so much worse.

In fact, peoples opinions have seemingly only gotten worse after the soyjaking and astroturfing from shills died down. This, I suspect, shall also be the fate of Kurtzman Trek. Forever ass, destined to age poorly.
