I know those worms infesting some Trill call themselves "Symbionts," implying some sort of symbiotic relationship, but I've always thought they were more akin to parasites.

It's clearly the worm doing most of the driving, even if they take on a lot of the personality of their host. Jadzia didn't kiss that one lady because Jadzia is a lesbo, she kissed her because the worm in her gut was married to the worm in the other lady's gut several lives earlier.

Only "the best" Trill get to be infested, presumably because there are so few worms to go around... and fair enough. But what if you're an awesome Trill and you get stuck with a loser Symbiont? Think about it, it's not like the worms are *only* sending their best in return, so they can't all be winners.

Also, and this is the most damning, if you pull the worm out of a Trill, the Trill dies almost immediately, but the worm lives on. This doen't sound like a 50/50 partnership to me.

It made no sense how Riker wanted to do sex to this person. She wasn't even funny:

I get that Riker would probably bang a knothole in a wooden fence, but he could do better than Veiny McBowlcut here. The Enterprise was full of impressionable young ensigns in tight spandex.

I don't think even Geordi or Barclay would've gone there. Maybe Riker's dad had a point when he wanted to beat him up.
SFDebris went on a tangent in his review that Geordi does make the most sense in that story. Especially going to great lengths to try and save her even at risk to his career.

Ruler would never risk his career for a woman. That was LITERALLY the backstory of why he and Troi broke up.

The general idea is that symbiotes get better the more hosts they have. The symbiote itself doesn't have any real personality, just inherited memories of the previous hosts. So if a new symbiote is put into a trill, there is little to no influence going on. But then you have dax, a 300 year old symbiote whose hosts have (mostly) been extraordinary. The memories and personalities it brings are much stronger and have greater subtle influences over its hosts.

The Trill sending their best ensures that symbiotes will get better with each host due to the acquisition of more knowledge. This is why trill and symbiote become one and the same once the merge is completed. Its not a takeover so much as a pilot (the trill) and co-pilot (symbiote). The Jazdia lesbo episode is simply a bad episode that was made to pander to fags in a way that was acceptable for TV and should have been more about a real conflict between Trill and symbiote when there is disagreement.

How did the Trills even get the idea to slice their guts open to stuff a worm in there?
Maybe they evolved together as humanoids with detachable brains in their guts. Kind of a life boat to carry the dead Trill's memories and implant them in a Trill without a gut brain. Survival of memes over genes. Over time, the worms discovered the cave ponds were a more fit environment for them, and the humanoids without the gut brain outbred the humanoids with gut brains, and they became separate species. But since they evolved as one species, they're still compatible enough that you can shove them back together if you have a notion to do so. They would still have the neurological and vascular plumbing, genetic markers, and maybe some folklore about how they lived before the great deworming.

The first episode with the trills wasn't very woke.

Beverly hooked up with one of them, an ambassador whose body died in some attack. They had to put the worm inside Riker's body to keep it safe until a new host could be sent and it's a big deal for Beverly because despite the trill still loved her, she was seeing her friend William and couldn't do it. When the new body arrives, she's very happy to see the non-Riker trill, but the little fella is a woman now. And you can see her disappointment.

I can imagine the outrage right now because the writers didn't force Beverly to have sex with a woman despite she wasn't into that.

It made no sense how Riker wanted to do sex to this person. She wasn't even funny:

That confirms she was a woman... that's why.

They also retconned the fuck out of the first showing of the TNG Trills so how much of that is still "canon" cept for the worm?

Thanks, now it's headcanon that there is a better than 0% chance the Dax worm has been stuck up somebody's butt before.
As long as the butts been thoroughly cleaned first it's all good. However it is more then likely the Dax worm had gone in and out dirty more then one occasion. 🤮

Does this thing look clean to you?
