Starfield - Bethesda's new space IP: will probably be full of fun and easily trackable bugs

How do you think Starfield will turn out?

Brain damaged kiwi manlet, Quin69, refunds Starfield after streaming it for 25 hours, because it's not released yet so steam allows full refunds until the release date.

Todd is seething.
I assume you are at 1080p? I'm at 1440p on a 3070ti and got around 40fps on high settings, 60 when inside. DLSS is Nvidia's ai upscaler that runs the game at a lower resolution and then upscales it to your desired resolution as a thing to give you better framerates. FSR is the open source version made by AMD, as Nvidia locked DLSS to their hardware and it requires their tensor cores to run. All the upscalers do is just make the game look blurrier, but you can never see it on youtube because of compression but people will literally have flame wars over how much they want to ruin their image quality and how one vaseline smear is better than another vaseline smear, all instead of just turning the settings down to improve framerates instead. It has also made people deathly afraid of any sort of shimmer or aliasing in the image, as they both use previous frames to blur out all fine detail that would result in shimmering. Its like TAA on steroids.
Probably. My monitors are old and I doubt they support above 1080.
I'll always say that I care more about artstyle than looking as realistic as possible, and Starfield wants to look realistic but the artstyle and quality is shit.

Ahh... I love the smell of buyers remorse in the morning. There is a reason why Bethesda fanboys are looked down upon in the gaming community. They are the living embodiment of "turning fans into fanatic's". This game was overhyped to all hell and given Bethesda track record over the past decade of course the game would disappoint. Yet their fans are still trying to delude themselves into thinking that the game is the game of the year and everyone who says otherwise is a toxic hater.

Tbf, X-23 in the Marvel comics is also a female clone from a male character (namely Wolverine) as is Cammy from M. Bison, so this isn't as jarring as your companion being an outright tranny and it would make some sense in the far future, people would have mastered how to take a dude's one X chromosome, duplicate it and make a biological woman. Still, the whole delivery of that scene is giving me massive troon validation vibes and more than enough reason not to even pirate this game. Like, why not just say that you are the clone of some dude's X chomosome and leave it at that. The entire scene makes it feel like she was once a dude when she was always a chick. It's not that dramatic.

I really hate this forced troon representation in this game and in thr games/media industry in general.

Wow, no wonder many people are refunding the game. Starfield doesn't appear to have a lot of replay value to it so you may as well take advantage of the refund policy and refund the game after playing the main story. This might be the dumbest thing Bethesda and Steam has done as of late. This also happened with Sonic Forces were people took advantage of the Steam refund policy and refunded the game after beating the main story which was only a few hours long. That lead to a change in Steams refund policy. I have a sneaking suspicion that something similar will happen because of Starfield.

"Same guy who made Skyrim's first nude mod returns to Starfield to do the same. That's will, that's honor, commitment -- like that Roman soldier standing guard at Pompeii."

Can we just take all the NSFW modders and bury them alive? That shit is fucking cringe.

Just had to search them up, the religion the Lodge guy follows is Sanctum Universum. I did not pick a starter religion or cult so someone else will have to answer that as I really don't want to play the game again. Enlightened, the other group, is more of a charity than a religion.

The Serpent's Embrace and the Universum's gods are just Starborn using their magic space powers to manipulate people in order to get to the artifact relics.

Perhaps I am projecting and speaking out my ass then, in which case disregard all I said and wait for someone who actually knows something about him to correct me. I just dislike his writing in Skyrim and now this because its boring, and I found in Starfield's case it was pretentious. Also apologies if my posts are scatterbrained.
I can't help but notice that the House Va'ruun sounds very close to the Hindu god Varuna. Varuna is typically depicted holding a snake in one of his arms. This seems too similar for coincidence. Could it be yet another example of a lack of creativity? It's one thing to use names of gods from various mythologies like Final Fantasy does and have them be their own sort of larger than life spectacle. Starfield doesn't seem to do that though.

How about Freespace? I used to hear about that game a lot back in the day. Since Volition went under I doubt we'll ever see a remake or re-release.
freespace is a different genre, it's a combat sim like the old x-wing games. there's no trading or sandbox elements. the x games (newer ones at least) are what you get when some germans take the old elite or privateer and go HAM. everyone likes to jerk off ED, but that's just a space-trucking pseudo-mmo...

as for a freespace re-release, volition lost the license 20 years ago, which then made volition (back when they were based) release the source code for it. so a modern version of it already exists: https://www.hard-light.net/
same reason there never was a freespace 3 (or at least not one by volition).

Everspace. I have it on Steam and Switch. I think there is a sequel as well. It's a space game. It has alien races in it. I haven't played much of it. It's rated as Mostly Positive on Steam and only costs $20. The sequel is $50. Everspace 1 released in 2017. You can do space battles and upgrade your ship. I don't know if you can buy other ships.
first everspace is a roguelike, you fly your ship and see how far you get while upgrading it over time trying to get further next time. haven't looked into everspace 2 much yet, all I know is they apparently removed the roguelike stuff and upped the budget for it.

That's one of the complaints people have about Bethesda and their games. They keep using the same shitty engine.
the engine is what makes their game what they are. no one would play skyrim without mods (console peasants not withstanding, they're known for their shit taste), if bethesda would switch to a "real" engine like unreal as lot of retards demand, it would also mean no mods, or at best some creation-club tier model swaps. doubt we'll see much of that for starfield anyway (similar to how FO4 never got as many mods), but in the end the engine is just a tool, and you need to pick the right tool for the job.

a "real" engine also wouldn't mean bethesda suddenly become god-tier coders with QA on the level of payment platforms, because again the engine is a tool, and it comes down how you use it too.

speaking of engines and spacegames reminded me of some other shitposting bait:
ubisoft's failed toys2life game from 2018 running on the division engine...

it's actually a pretty fun game you don't even need the toys for (never did apparently), but in true ubisoft fashion they had to fuck up the pc port where you have to disable virtualization otherwise their way oversensitive denuvo throws a hissy fit and refuses to launch. worse the official reply is even more clueless (at least they still respond years later, even if it doesn't help much). I can totally see the normies the game would appeal to be able to deal with that retarded shit...

EDIT: also blows my mind how fucking white the cast was allowed to be just 5 years ago, might have something to do with the starfox collab for the switch version and japan...

been playing it the last few days

- Combat is Fallout 4 but a bit tighter. It seems to be slightly improved but not by much. That said, I have been enjoying the combat, especially larger firefights with enemies jumping / jetting around the map.

- The game's been running smooth for me. Performance has been fine on ultra settings at 1440p and outside of a few visual glitches I haven't had any bugs.

- The perk system sucks. Most of the perks are just bland +5% to [x] stat type stuff. What really hurts it is that you now need to complete a challenge to unlock the next perk rank. All of them are really boring 'do [x] [z] amount of times'. Some of them are really retarded, like leadership's challenges are all 'sprint [x] amount of meters with a companion'.

- Equipment is an improvement over F04's but that's not saying much. I mean, basically it's FO4's but with more variety.

- Exploration is gay and pointless. They accurately recreated space by making it an empty void that takes forever to travel anywhere. I've tried traveling between planets in a system but I'm not even sure if you can. The distance markers on far away objects never change, which makes me wonder if you're tethered to the nearest planet. Planet exploration is similarly boring. To give the game a fair chance I 100%'d one of the planets with a temple on it, figuring that since it was tied to the story it might have more content on it than a random one. Most of the 'points of interest' were not, in fact, interesting -- they'd just be a cave, a 'lone hill', a crater, or something equally boring. Every once in a while I'd come across an abandoned outpost taken over by pirates and clearing that out could be fun but that's about it. I've yet to build a single outpost and I doubt I ever will.

- Ship building is a pain in the ass. The whole Lego thing is fine -- connecting the pieces is easy enough. The problem is there're dozens of little requirements and limits you won't know about until you hit them. Like, I upgraded my grav drive and suddenly I'm getting the error 'cannot reach cockpit from landing bay' even though I didn't touch either of those two things and the grav drive didn't affect the physical layout at all. Trying to upgrade my shield generator (which is a tiny little module) resulted in an error telling me I now needed more landing gears. Then there's' the fact that a lot of pieces are tied to perks and other pieces won't appear until you hit a certain level. The cherry on top is that every shop sells different pieces, so if you really wanna customize and compare parts you'll be constantly jumping between planets and stations.

- Ship combat and control is surprisingly good. Given that it's Beth's first attempt at usable vehicles at all I was expecting nothing but clunky jank. But, no, it's all surprisingly smooth. Different ship builds have different feels when it comes to maneuvering (especially at high speeds in combat).

- Side quests are the major saving grace of the game for me. You typically have a few options on how to proceed and the game reacts to how well you do at completing objectives. The faction quests in particular are nice. Factions are so removed from the main story that you often feel like you're in a completely different game when you're doing their quest chains. Faction quests typically have different branches you can go down (e.g. betraying your faction, helping someone else take over), plus your rewards and how NPCs react to you change depending on how you carried out a mission. Overall, I've really been enjoying the side quests, especially the faction ones.

- The main quest isn't great. If you're following it then at no point do you have any reason to interact with the rest of the game's world. Not even something like 'you need x amount of money to finish a project before moving on'. The space powers are pointless and seem to have been added just because Beth probably figured people expected them (the only one I like is the precog ability, which allows you to see how a NPC will react to a dialogue choice). I only got about halfway through it before putting it on hold to explore and do side quests.

- The main companions are dull. The only one I like is Andreja due to her connection to the weird snake cult and the fact that she's' a bit more morally flexible than the others. That said, they do seem to have quite a bit of content -- they're constantly speaking up during quests, remarking about your actions and current location, and sometimes you can even have them speak for you in dialogues. There are other, non-full companions you can get but I'm not sure how much content they have so I haven't bothered much with them.

Overall I'd probably give it a 6/10. So long as I have a side quest to follow I'm usually enjoying myself. Admittedly, I never expected the game to be more than a Bethesda Fallout but in space and that's pretty much what the game is.

They own Id Software and even got them to do the gunplay in Fallout 4 (and probably the precombine vis stuff too but I can't verify this). I'm sure Id could put together something that is modular like creation and still loads data from external plugins and add all the features Bethesda needs but is apparently impossible on other engines for some reason, at least that's the big cope I see from fanboys.

I just don't understand people and their obsession with DLSS instead of just lowering graphics settings

High settings + DLSS looks better than low settings.

FSR is the open source version made by AMD

FSR doesn't use any sort of ML-trained algorithm. It just uses edge + motion detection. DLSS uses ML trained on 16K images in the base game.

All the upscalers do is just make the game look blurrier

No, that's not all they do. Can you tell which of these images was rendered with DLSS?

So, basically, a bog standard AAA game? It's about what I expected from Bethesda. Overall, from everything you have said, I don't think the game is worth 70 bucks. Maybe when it is majorly discounted on Steam and GOG but not full price.

What confuses me about the debate about wokeness in Starfield is that EVERY TRIPLE A GAME MADE IN THE WEST has been woke for 5 years or so, they didn't include that last minute. Bg3 is woke, and I actually like that game and it is pretty well written.
They all have troons, everyone is bi, and racial diversity is stronger than in San Francisco or London.
That is simply the way things will be for a while, the decision was not made by the consumer, it was made by developers, journalists and investment fonds.

I am annoyed by it too, but the choice is pretty much to either tolerate wokeness or sticking to indie games or games made outside whiteoid territories.

Yeah, the $70 price tag is ridiculous. I'd just pirate like I did it if you have any interest in it. Like all of the Beth's games, the game will undeniably be better In a couple of years once all the expansions and DLC are out, giving the game more content, and there're mods that improve the UI, ship building, space exploration, and the like.
