Here’s a few scatters thoughts on the game 8 hours in-

Playing on Hexbox Series X-

Gunplay/Combat
I have only used guns (bullet not energy) and the gunplay feels like a more refined Fallout 4. Animals only seem to try and rush you down, this isn’t all bad since getting rushed down by a group of giant mantises was fairly harrowing. Humans seem to have had some work out into them. They don’t just sit behind cover popping up and down like targets at a shooting gallery. If you hide behind cover they will move around to get an angle on you and flush you out. I have also had a couple of enemies jet pack off one catwalk to the level below when I have had them pinned.

Space Combat
I haven’t done much of this besides the mandatory bits and a couple of fights entering a system. So far I hate the controls, the default gamepad controls feel very unnatural, I’m sure I will get used to them in time.

Ship Builder
Haven’t done any yet, looking forward to trying it out. Hopefully Incan make some cool stuff along with a flying cock and balls.

Levelling/Perks
I’m level 11 and wish I had more perks, so far I have picked up the base gun damage/carry weight/scanner range and basic jump pack skill. Depending on what the level cap is I don’t know if I will have enough to get all the weapon/suit upgrade levels/settlement levels/ship skills and to specialise with a couple of weapon types. The picks I have so far seems pretty necessary seeing as you need to invest 4 points into a tree (Physical/Social/Combat/Science/Tech) to get the second tier of perks unlocked.

Main Story
I don’t hate it. I’ve avoided spoilers so this could deteriorate rapidly. The main group you are a part of aren’t terribly annoying and the Slav woman seems a ok companion so far. This is a huge upgrade for me over Fallout 4, I really hated the minutemen. Got my first two powers. Unlimited sprint is meh, I guess the anti grav will be ok in combat but I haven’t used it yet.

Side Quests
Haven’t done any so no comment.

The Starfield Stare
Yeah it’s pretty bad. But I will make the most of it later on when I’m overpowered and can return to New Atlantis in order to purify it.

Overall I’m having fun and barring any major missteps in the story I will be sinking a lot of time into Starfield. It is shaping up to be more or less what I wanted which is a new Bethesda game with the parts of Fallout 4 that I couldn’t get on with either fixed- insufferable main faction to push the main story forward, or removed- voiced protagonist with a fixed back story.

At those resolution scaling settings even something like Dragon Age Origins or Witcher 2 looks better than your modern game, far better IMO.
Is it even having texture settings? Can't find any. At least with textures you could run them at max and then decrease the rest, but nope.
I don't think it's acceptable to have games look and run like this. That 1070ti thing can run Witcher 3 at Ultra at 60-ish and Cyberpunk at 40-ish, 1080p. And the way they will look is not even comparable to low settings Starfield, with FSR2 on top to make it even blurrier.

It looks detailed at Ultra, in a realism-seeking way. Kinda stumbles into uncanny valley though.
However, at Low, Medium, or with scaling, especially at 1080p, it looks horrendous.
Scaling doesn't work well in most games I have no idea why devs insist on it. Just do fewer polys ffs and concentrate on artistic direction, gameplay etc.
I literally couldn't care less CP77 looked well, cause the game was fucking boring, and when it got a bit interesting, it immediately ended in the most abrupt way.
These idiot devs don't get that they will never make games that are as popular as Skyrim, or Dragon Age, or Witcher if they just try realistic gfx, it's never enough. I mean, maybe it will for the new generations of players that will not understand games used to be different.

If you like Bethesda games you will 100% like Starfield.
It probably won’t win Game of The Year, the game that looks like it came out on PS3 where you can fuck a bear will. But it’s packed to the brim with content and despite the fact that most people on this website like to be contrarian when it comes to gaming just to make themselves stand out, (calling everything “soulless” despite not knowing the meaning of the word), I’m having a good time with it.

So yeah if you like the Bethesda charm but with a lot less bugs and a lot more polish, you’ll like this game.

I will probably get it eventually. I'm just waiting to see the levels of cringe in the game. Some people seem to think this is supposed to be a space sim and I don't think that's what this is. I think some people are expecting Elite Dangerous a finished version of Star Citizen and No Man's Sky.
