I am changing the colors to balance out underrepresentation in the fandom and show and because it fits my artistic vision and helps make the characters more trustworthy and better rolemodels for children.

You're the best.

I'm not a GIMP expert, but judicious use of the scale and move tools will probably be your best bet. Scale down body parts in chunks and then realign them. Or maybe the cage tool.
