Steven Universe - Now a Griefing Thread

Having mixed feelings about this show. I’m not going to deny there haven’t been highlights in this show, particularly Volleyball, Little Homeworld and Why So Blue. At the same time, it can get really bad and I can’t help agree with some off the criticism here. The series tried to address problems in the original but it’s either too late (calling out Rose’s bullshit) or done hamfistedly (Steven using violence against Jasper). Steven is written to be sympathetic and overworked but comes off as a jerk sometimes, with other characters seemingly taking steps back in their character development. (Also the vegetarian line makes sense on paper given this is Steven, but keep in mind this also the same kid who munched on hotdogs in the intro).

The show has introduced several new Gem characters but somehow their even more boring than the townies; only Larimar has any semblance of a personality. The actual pacing of many episodes is off, with them trying to pull off that Season 1 feel that just doesn’t work at this point anymore. I can’t place my finger on it but the show has such a different tone from the previous entries and not in a good way. They really should have just ended the show after the movie imho.

Autistic ramblings on a cartoon aside, here’s a clip of tonight’s episode. God give me strength.

OOF, Lars being cucked by a they-snowflake. To be honest though, I never liked Sadie after trapping Lars on an island and not telling him there was a way out while he gradually grew more hopeless and paranoid. That's pretty fucked up imo. At least it'll make the shippers angry.

The show may have good songs, but oh boy is the writing very shitty; EZPZ's take on the show was great and he found out that some of the people who worked on the show made Ed, Edd n Eddy porn.
He didn’t find this out though, it’s always been an open secret, even before Sugar went into animation. Pan Pizza even mentioned it in his review of SU in 2013.

On one hand, shipper salt is always welcome. On the other hand, I don’t like the ship and even I thought it was a pretty unsatisfying conclusion after all the focus it was given; I felt the same way with Regular Show.
And I can’t help but roll my eyes at people creaming their pants over a random non-binary character.

I saw a snippet where the new gems got a job doing what they were made to do and Steven got upset at them for fitting back into their assigned roles. It’s funny that the moral of the story was to let all the gems get back to doing their pre-assigned tasks. Very progressive lol

It would’ve been better if a few gems did decide to change their jobs from Steven’s meddling. Because now, all I got from that clip was that people are born to stay in their caste and will willingly follow it. The writing is so deep it loops back around to being re.tarded

With every problem, the Crewuniverse tries to fix in Steven Universe they ended making far more problems than solutions.
Take for instance the current townies episodes, those episodes were dull to watch because nothing of noteworthy happen and it wasted time for the audiences when there were many interesting things happen outside them. All they have done is to replace the boring human characters with even more gem's characters.

To be fair, one gem benefitted from Steven’s meddling. But yeah, the episode straight ends with Amethyst saying some people are better of sticking with what they’re good at. Keep in mind, this is the same show that pushes the change is good message and how we don’t have to do what what we’re fated to do.
It feels like they want to deconstruct the show but end up just shitting all over the original show’s messages.

I hate it. But at least Lars is moving on and leaving Sadie to her bullshit. Unless he isn't, in which case just fuck this show.

The show's kind of a hot mess, but I still find myself enjoying it.

It's sort of like the one dumb kid that keeps doing weird shit, it clear they don't entirely know what they're doing half the time or why, and sometimes they end up making an ass of themselves. Yet, once in a while they'll actually do something kinda cool, and even if they screw up, they at least do so in an interesting way.

I did miss that part. Though, that gem was made to claw out ice sculptures for the diamonds. And what I noticed was that someone who was commanded to piercing sounds of nails on ice found a liking to or more likely was made to like high pitched noises. Is it really that big of a change that this gem instead opted to enjoy the reees from children instead of the shrill sound of clawing out ice? It’s the same allotted reaction the diamonds programmed her to like.

The only gem who found a purpose besides listening to their given role in this episode was Amethyst. And that’s only because she wasnt indoctrinated into it.

I know someone said it, but "they/them" and Sadie's new "partner"
Stop jerking off sjw sexist "diversity" Sugar. God, imagine if in the 2000s every show had an edgy emo character. Except the emo characters didn't convince you to pull something that convinced you to do a flip. Not to mention the word partner gets under some peoples' skin because a lot of gay/lesbians had to use it to avoid being outed but now it's the cool thing for "I'm female AND I like to play sports AND I wish my breasts were smaller uwu uwu I'm GNC and totes trans!"

I remember when I watched the episode where the gems come in a hand shaped ship and thinking to myself, "Yeah, the american military would rain nukes on that thing by now". The goverment and military doesnt seem to exist for some odd reason. And its not like this is addressed in the show like the CGs have a deal with the goverment or something. I know that they say the world isnt like ours but you can tell its just an excuse for them to get away with shit they would never in a "somewhat realistic setting" that the show goes for. It seems that outside of the obviously white corrupt mayor, there isnt any major signs of goverment structure. Or media for that matter. You would think after the water of the ocean began disappearing SOMEONE would fucking investigate that shit, but no, that interesting plot point never happens.

And its not like its something that would be too "adult" or out of place in the show, or is the concept of the Crystal Gems having to be talked down by white goverment males with guns too much for the target audience to handle? I remember how the powerpuff girls had to constantly answer to the damage they cause and be talked down by mostly adult white males (even if the mayor could be a dummy most of the times), one of them being their own father (a patriarchal image talking down to young females?...not very current year if you ask me). I have read a theory that the crystal gems are just that "powerful" that they are able to intimidate the military away...

Aw you mean the painfully incompetent trio that actually makes beach city more in danger than not? Its not like we see them actually solving human issues, only those that most likely wouldnt have happened if they werent around. Lets just say J Jonah Jameson would have a field day with those girls. Besides, we have seen Gems poofing over stuff weaker than a bullet soo...no. Not likely. The Gem Empire only works within its own little logic.

What disturbs me is that there are people who identify with Sadie and Lars...Lets just say that I wouldnt want to be in a trapped room with them for more than a minute. Sadie acts like a victim but she is just as unlikable as Lars deep down. Same goes for Lapis. This is where I start to wonder if Sugar doesnt have a "thing" for abusive toxic relationships...

I’d love an episode where they discuss how all of beach city is getting outraged at the mass of gems (there should be thousands to millions of gems being restored. Not a dozen or so as two militaries were mass corrupted) working either for free or for pennies that kick out people looking for jobs. Or maybe outrage over the gems taking up spaces for themselves or the general fear people would have at a mass of actual ALIENS coming in to live among them. It wouldn’t just be Ronaldo freaking out.

Though even if Sugar wanted to, there is no way in hell CN would let such an on-the-nose issue being addressed to a children audience

I find that a lot of the woke crowd have creepy obsessions with toxic relationships. They say they're deconstructing them and exploring why they're bad, but when it gets to the point where they can't or don't write healthy relationships, it starts to seem like a fetish. The recent Volleyball episode sticks out in that regard. They could have written a Pearl who was genuinely over Rose and her own person, but she spends the entire time being jealous and insecure, and the conclusion was about her relationship with Rose again. Plus they really didn't have to do the infatuated angle with Volleyball too. It's been done and just felt gross.

It’s somewhat similar to what Star Vs did; after pointless will they or won’t they tension, a female character randomly shows up with a LGBT suitor, for the sole purpose of woke points. And I bet you Shep is only non-binary to pander to the people who said Stevonnie wasn’t “real” representation.

That’s my beef with Future so far; despite the heavy handed theme of change, everyone has been regressing from their character development. Pearl is back to admiring Rose despite her flaws, Steven is back to not wanting change, Lars now wants to be a space pirate again even after reuniting with his family, Sadie quit her band and is now with some rando, etc. Kind of contradictory if you ask me.

Here's a video on the state of animation that gave rise to Steven Universe.
tl;dr: Pendelton Ward of Adventure Time started the trend of hiring artists from Tumblr and not enforcing any standard of professionalism whatsoever, and literally stole IP from a retarded child. He hired Rebecca Sugar from Tumblr and she got her own show where she repeated the same formula, and that is what pozzed Cartoon Network.

You know, I was fine with SU despite the show's direction but now that I'm giving SU:F a watch I'm just shaking my head at getting into the whole damn thing.

Oh, and I just learned that Indya Moore voiced Shep in the the most recent pair of episodes. I was fine with Jinx Monsoon, a known drag queen, voicing Emerald but having a nonbinary troon on the cast is where I draw the line.

I think you had the right idea earlier. This show had so many chances to end but it just keeps going and dragging on, making things worse. Compare this to GF which managed to wrap things up more or less with two seasons.

I hate defending modern CN shows but a couple of things I need to point out;
The IP wasn’t stolen, CN contacted the child who made the character and got permission to use it.
Also, Rebecca Sugar didn’t have a tumblr when she was hired, she caught people’s attention with her webcomics.
That being said, tumblr has been used by CN as portfolio to gather artists and nepotism is partly to blame for the current state of CN.

I once felt bad about not liking SUF; I’m well over it now.
What frustrates me about Moore’s character is they’re such a non entity; outside of a stupid name and an ugly design, they’re only appeal is being non binary and in a supposedly good relationship with Sadie. It’s almost like they were designed to be a token character...
