To be fair to the show crew, when one staff member on the show decided for themselves that Peridot & Lapis should be a couple. They were told to cut it out, then given the ol' "Gardening leave" for continuing. (can be seen in OP's post bragging about their involvement and suggesting she should of given Peridot a fidget spinner obsession)

Part of it is that the show crew are naturally all progressive types that want to be inclusive, but are fighting against where they want the story to go, trusting the crew, as well as riding out the salt produced if they choose an unpopular story route. To Sugar and her core teams credit at least, the show has managed to be fairly open when dealing with challenging characters - rather than devolving into "well obviously x is bad because strawman"

That said the whole things gotten itself muddled with the whole "sins of the mother" plot. The last batch of episodes felt like the team wrote themselves into an awkward corner as they redo Character Development that's already been covered at this point.

Lauren Zuke wasn't fired, she quit. Her quitting also had nothing to do with shipping; her comments on rubbing her "little gay hands" on the show are obviously just her messing with people who think she was "fired for Lapidot".

Let's not kid ourselves: the show's writing wasn't very good to begin with. It's just more obvious now because the series has lost its veneer of novelty.

I've said it before, I'll say it again: The show's biggest problem is a lack of discipline with the borders. That's why the writing and art are all over the place- instead of being a coherent collaborative effort, the show is a bunch of people doing different shit and trying to cobble it together.

I know she quit (hence "gardening leave") - but it seemed to be implied from what I saw that it was more of a "we'll say you quit so you can move on without a mark" kind of deal. Regardless it's still not really a good show to then bitterly joke about how you could of really done it worse.

It's not like it's not entirely unknown to let someone go quietly or with some dignity so that, even if they make a mistake, you allow them not to build a bad rep. The rest after that is on the individual to handle. Antagonising the audience after you left production just doesn't strike me as the sort of behavior that gets people keen to hire you after.

I certainly wasn't defending the writing, I like some ideas or how the show does sometimes try to approach subjects. But it often gets way too bogged down in trying to deliver some kind of deeper message, and not really delivering it.

But yes I do agree with you that the writing is inconsistent and that was really my main point. You get some weird tug of wars with the characters. Like at one point Steven is highly aware of others feelings and his own, then next arc he's tone death in these situations again.

May be going off topic a bit here ... but
@★ Lion ★, I heard you have some info on traumatizedofficial if you're willing to share? Sounds like she's worthy of a thread of her own, from things I've seen around.

Why did she quit then, and where did you hear this? I've only ever heard of her chimping out because she didn't get her tru OTP and she's exceptional enough online that it seems believable.

just what everyone knows. she’s a typical racist who hates men and white people, that she’s a lesbian but goes by he/him.
she’s kept me blocked since i was lion so i never did a lot of interaction with her.

I'm surprised that a community like this that absolutely eats up the concept of genderless, gem-based beings that date/get into relationships with whoever they want(?) hasn't latched onto "Land of the Lustrous." It was made in 2012 (a year before SU) and has the exact same fucking idea. It's just an anime, but then again, this thread's already established that said SU fans are below anime fans.

Call it :offtopic:, but I found it just a bit curious.

If I had to guess, probably it's a mix of Land of the Lustrous getting an anime series adaption only recently and the original creator of said series being 'problematic', causing many tumblr users to drop/avoid it.

All the characters are thin with pale skin so they're not touching it. The one SU character who is, Pearl, is pretty hated by these people for being a standin for white people anyway.

She said on her Tumblr that the job itself and the work environment became too mentally taxing.

They're getting into it only now. It just took until the manga got an anime adaptation, because Tumblrinas don't read anything that isn't slow burn coffeeshop AU fanfics.

Tumblr's now rallying against it bc the author has written incredibly vague manga prior to HnK and ofc tumblr can't use mental thinking to realize vague =/= pedophilia/incest themes

...but tumblr unironically defends pedophilia and incest?
