What is even the point of quote-replying to a post if it's very large? What does the quote actually supply to your response if it's that big? If you're writing a response to an author and quote his entire book, how does that even help? There is literally no point (aside from giving a button to click to view the reference post), but it also bloats the page with tons of extra shit that it does not need. If someone makes a huge post with images and youtube videos and every reply is a response to it, your browser loads the same shit 15 fucking times. It's awful.
It's strictly "Null doesn't like it" and I've always used technical means to try and persuade people to use the site in a more productive way that I believe works best.
I agree with your reasoning here, honestly. If you're replying to war and peace then you're quoting inefficiently, and a subsequent reader is unlikely to be able to follow the conversation quite so well.
I feel like a better solution to your issue there would be to do something like the following; truncate quotes that are too long down into some sort of message directing the user to the original post. I'd argue this is preferable to your current "solution" of just outright preventing quoting of large posts. Example;
POST TOO LARGE, CLICK NAME TO READ
The problem with your current implementation is that many users think it's a "reply bug", and respond to these large posts through methods such as simply @ing the original poster. This makes conversations harder to follow, and often results in people spending screen real-estate complaining about the "reply bug".
You and I both know that this isnt an ideal world where all users will act optimally and make use of the highlight-quote function, so while I agree that persuading users to use the site "correctly" is preferable, I think doing it in this "softer" manner is more beneficial overall.
I'm not trying to be antagonistic, I hope you'll consider the suggestion, or at least let me know why you prefer your current implementation. I assume you're of the belief that allowing users to do this would mean they'd be less likely to quote "properly"?
If the quote in the post is too long, the post becomes unquotable as well.
Perhaps this could be fixed in somewhat the same way? If a post is made "too long" by the inclusion of long quotes, then truncate THOSE if that post is replied to.
