SUV hits crowd at Lapu Lapu Day Block Party in Vancouver, BC​

An SUV has been driven into a crowd of people at the Lapu Lapu Day Block Party in Vancouver, B.C., according to witnesses, causing an unknown number of casualties.

The incident happened at around 8 p.m. on Saturday when the vehicle plowed into people attending the event, which is an annual celebration honoring the Philippines’ first national hero.

Footage from the scene showed multiple victims on the ground, some of whom appeared dead or seriously injured. The exact number of casualties was not immediately clear.

A large number of emergency services are at the scene. It’s unclear whether the crash was an accident or intentional. Police did not immediately respond to a request for information.

The Lapu Lapu festival was taking place in the area of E 43rd Avenue and Fraser Street.


About 30 police cars, fire trucks, ambulances have gone by on West 41st heading east in the last 10 minutes. Anyone know what’s going on? Seems big. They’re continuing to pass every 2 minutes or so.

My brother witnessed the scene unfold. He hasn't returned home yet, but called saying he phoned the police after witnessing people get run over, he said he saw people flying over top the car. I hope he is okay

Yeah this is getting more and more curious. It goes without saying that someone that does this isn't right in the head, but the number of events like this is greatly outweighed by the number of people walking around with profound and under-treated mental illness not committing massacres. I'd like to know the circumstances of his brother's murder but I get the feeling information about this guy generally isn't gonna be forthcoming.

Lo's brother, Alexander, was killed last year. The 31-year-old's body was found in a home near Knight Street and East 33rd Avenue in January, the Vancouver Sun reported on Sunday. Dwight William Kematch, 39, was arrested at the house and charged with second-degree murder

Ghalib said that during the last week of January, he received via Facebook threats from a man named Dwight William Kematch, who wrote that he was going to kill Ghalib by shooting him at the next City Council meeting, set for Jan. 29. Some members of Hamtramck City Council received similar threats, he said.

“He specified the time and place, during City Council meetings, so I took it seriously and I reported it to the police,” Ghalib told Niraj Warikoo of the Free Press. “I have been receiving many threats, but never took any of them as serious. He sent his threat to me through Facebook, then he immediately blocked me. That was another alarming and warning sign that made me act and report it to the police.”

Three days after the threats, police in Vancouver arrested Kematch, 39, on Jan. 28 and later charged him with second-degree murder in the homicide of Alexander Lo, 31 of Vancouver. Media outlets in Canada said it was the first homicide of the year in Vancouver.

The brother was murdered January 28th of 2024. Murders occur at a rate of maybe 5-15 a year in Vancouver. After Lo's murder, the next murder would not occur until April of that year. A man has been charged with his murder, Dwight William Kematch. Kematch was arrested at the scene. Kematch is sometimes used as a Native name, but idk. Alexander Lo, the brother, was found after a 911 call in a house at Knight and 33rd, so about ten blocks west of where Adam Lo would eventually go on a vehicular murder spree. Alexander was 31; Kematch was 39. I cannot find any other court judgements for Kematch, which doesn't mean they don't exist, just that my very cursory search didn't reveal them.

Adam Lo (the SUV driver) made two gofundme drives: one for expenses related to Alexander Lo's funeral, (archive) and one for his mother's expenses after Adam reported that he found her unconscious after a suicide attempt (archive). The first was very successful, raising nearly 10K, and the second raised only $175. Interestingly, the first references the mother having built "a tiny home" for Alexander Lo. Tiny homes are not generally legally parkable in Vancouver and building one for one's 31-year-old son suggests that Alexander, too, may have had difficulties of some sort. According to Alexander Lo's instagram account it was a laneway house, so the mother put a small apartment in a separate building in her backyard. This is expensive. Alexander worked for Sephora, went to a lot of Broadway musicals, aspired to work for Westjet (a discount airline), and was going to school for animation (not a real profession).

There's film of Alexander's dog, Lucky, and you can briefly see at the beginning a very distinct pink house and next to it, the house number, 2262. There is a 2262 E. 44th Ave that is next to an identical pink house, the one in the video. Across the street is a house with the distinct fence seen in the video of Lucky.

Lucky is in the house across the street. This is less than five minutes' drive (perhaps 20 minutes walk) from 43rd and Fraser, the site of the festival.

Adam Lo's family is from that immediate neighbourhood. Very, very sad.

I believe that the Dwight Kematch who is being prosecuted for murder is this guy.

He has a Youtube account with some schizo shit on it. Most notably, this video. This Dwight Kematch lives on the east side of Vancouver, goes to Sunrise market (which is in Hastings), and speaks with an eastern Canadian or Native accent.

Kematch references living at 965 Main Street, an SRO in the Downtown East Side. SRO -- single room occupancy -- are the lowest possible stop on the housing chain, and living in one in this area strongly, strongly suggests that Kematch had a history of substance abuse and/or severe mental illness. 965 Main Street has since been purchased by the Province of BC with the hopes of turning it into a supportive housing site, but when Kematch was living there, it was just a privately-owned slum.

Lo appeared very briefly in court for a bail hearing Sunday afternoon, wearing grey sweats. He did not request bail and will remain in custody until his next appearance, scheduled for May 26 in Vancouver provincial court.

A publication ban prevents other details from being reported. When such bans are in place, journalists can only report three main things: the fact that a bail hearing took place, whether or not the accused was granted bail and whether there are any conditions to their release.

there's a huge amount of really horrific intense mental illness in this part of the world which is obviously due to the weather

and there's never any security at filipino events because filipinos are simultaneously extremely chill and extremely racist, there doesn't need to be any security normally because there are dads everywhere and they don't let anybody do any ghettoshines

this is horrifically sad and I hope some good comes out of it, like someone ends up running for mayor behind it on a "lock up crazy people" platform

Canadian media is shockingly uncurious in general.

The systematic failure here is intense:
Daddy Lo is MIA and may well have returned to Asia, as is common.
Mrs. Lo appears to have taken a second mortgage on her formerly-working class property to build a laneway for Alexander.
Alexander needed a laneway because he was a partial fail-to-launch, hopping from one education program to another while working retail.
Alexander also needed a laneway because the cost of real estate and rent in Vancouver is eye-watering.
Building a laneway in Vancouver is absolutely obscenely expensive and almost never worthwhile, due in part to the fact that Vancouver has its own building code. It probably cost Mrs. Lo what a house would cost in a reasonable place.
Alexander Lo was murdered by a DTES resident who has crazy and scary rantings going back years. It's not clear why these two people would ever cross paths, or why this would happen in a house in Alexander's working class neighbourhood.
Mrs. Lo is then unable to make the mortgage payments and overdoses, herself. Her inability to make the mortgage payments mean that both she and son Adam became housing-insecure.
Adam Lo seemed to have pre-existing mental issues. People in his orbit start making increasingly desperate attempts to get someone to pay attention to his deteriorating mental state, culminating in someone calling a psych hospital less than 24 hours before the event.
Adam Lo appears to have chosen the festival because it was a few blocks from his house.

Adam Lo has a very limited digital footprint.
