Tactical Indie RPGs - The sucessors of X-COM, Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy Tactics and Heroes of Might and Magic.

That's no reason to not make your own JA.

Here's another wannabe, it should be leaving early access "soon".
You know what's bullshit about End State, I'm pretty sure I've known about it since ~2018'ish. And the first time I saw it, I was really hyped since at the time I was disillusioned with how simple the firaxis reboot of xcom was.
Then it disappeared and I assumed it was vaporware, then came back in early access 2022 and I wishlisted it even though I know deep down the game will be disappointing and I don't think I'll even play it.

Ultimately "mercs in African shithole" is just an another common setting like wild west or Tolkienesque fantasy is.
Not that common actually. Like in terms of turn based tactical games, we only have this game, JA3 and Jazz: Work for Hire (which was gonna be JA3)

You could've fooled me that this game was actually set in Detroit, it looks less like Soldiers of Fortune and more like a pastiche of modern SoF tropes.
JA has more of a 50s-80s Proxy Wars vibe, which makes it a lot more appealing and interesting.
Although for once I'd like the concept played straight.

Has anybody tried MENACE?
have you tried reading the thread or using the thread search feature

I liked it a lot, but wait for it to get out of EA. Currently the game just ends once MENACE finally shows up (and I think the whole map/mission select structure is basically a placeholder but they don't mention that anywhere either).

No. Why would I do that?

I do think the intelligence feature and the vehicles make the game stand out from other tactical RPGs. You can basically have an APC mounted with machine guns and rockets ferry around troops who can use it as cover, which is pretty rad.
They did say in their dev logs that they would now focus on the SOF parts of the game so I have resigned myself to see the game lose the parts I actually liked about it.
Are they trying to push the overall game in a le heckin' special ops direction, or are they just developing the concealment and ambush features?

Why a Battle Tank?

For a long time, we wanted to keep the scope of the game a little bit under an actual “war” and wanted to focus on more mobile and special forces-oriented operations. For that, setting up a full-blown battle tank was just too much, as it implied being very heavy, difficult to deploy, and slow. This did not really fit the RMC doctrines we had in mind.

However, we have since changed our mind and feel that an actual battle tank, or at least the option to use it, expands what's possible in the game and gives players more freedom in how they set up their armies.

From a lore perspective, a battle tank makes sense for the Rogue Army to use, and to be honest, the faction is in dire need of some armored support. Its infantry and support units were already good, but the faction struggled to provide staying power, as it was mostly infantry-based. Well-equipped player units could go all-in on anti-infantry equipment and go easy on AT options, which made army building against them a bit one-dimensional.

The battle tank will help close some big gaps in Rogue Army lists and make fighting them more interesting. Also, as with all vehicles, we try to keep them usable by the player as well, so you can loot and use them yourself if you want to."

I like the game because it manages to give me a feel for the more Infantry side of a war skirmish but I think the devs wanted to come across as more SOF than Run-Of-The-Mill Marine Infantry from this post. I expect them to keep tethering the line but it wouldn't really suprise me if they decided to jump the shark into full SOF and stop providing RMC and Colaition stuff. Either way I should probably just make a game myself with the shit I want instead of doing it vicariously thru the games I play.
