Took her out to get her nails trimmed yesterday and the guy who did it botched it and sprained one of her toes. Took her to a vet and was told if it didn’t sort itself out in a week to bring her back for a splint. She’s not showing any major distress; still climbing and mischief making at a slower pace, just irritation if I fuss over her.

now that there's a curfew from 11 to 5 in my neck of the woods some owl in my neighborhood has decided it's clearly his terrain now and is regularly letting anybody within earshot know

I love these guys' videos. They take very good care of their ducks (and turtle), to the point that they willingly turn their back yard into a muddy marsh just to give them something to play around in and forage like wild ducks. The male duck does a savage PROTECC if his lady feels threatened or simply irritated, which is really cute.

The coolest birds were the phorusrhacids (the terrorbirds). From stress testing 3D models made by scanning intact skulls, paleontologists determined that their giant beaks were not used to grab prey, but to peck it to death and with great force. The largest recorded species, Titanis walleri, was native to North America and is speculated to have survived into the Pliocene along the Gulf Coast. It was also speculated to be taller than the average man with a probable obligate carnivore lifestyle.

Their closest living relatives, the seriemas, often kill snakes in a very phorusrhacid manner, slamming the snake onto the ground until the snake dies. Unlike phorusrhacids, seriema beaks can effectively grab struggling prey, so they can be extra viscous with their snake slamming.
