I recently visited family in my state, and the distance from my place to my family's place was about the same as the distance between Edinburgh and London. I didn't even leave the state the entire time. The effect of leaving one state for another is massive, if only because of the amount of distance between your new home and what you left your old home to get away from. You can live your entire life in the US without seeing Washington DC. In the UK, everyone is bound to go to London at least once. The size difference is massive.
