Because the nhs provides something to people that they would otherwise be unable to afford. It's also a very fair system that supports the unlucky people that get worse illnesses through no fault of their own. The nhs is a good system, there's no special reason, people like it because it's good. A road doesn't stop you dying of cancer. The nhs has a lot of issues but they are fairly easily fixable by simply restricting the british healthcare system to being only usable by british people.

That said, the regimental system was reformed some time in the mid 2000s or 2010s, which mostly broke the link between regiments and their traditional recruiting grounds. The military is quite well mixed now, nationally. I suspect a lot of people see it as compared to the mess of other countries. Especially the US where a seemingly trivial injury or a check up costs a fortune, and insurance companies will simply refuse to pay out. I hear a lot of horror stories from internet friends, and even videos like the Markiplier pharmacy saga.

If we got rid of the NHS then anybody doing something slightly useful with their life would be be better off financially after accounting for decreased taxes (20%) and increased private insurance costs but more importantly they would have access to a system that actually works.

Medical students in this country are also cucked hard by the NHS - after 5 years of study they have the privilege of earning £32k doing an awful job while their intellectual peers who went down the finance or cs route are approaching or already north of £100k.

Lived in both, as in owned a home, paid taxes, worked in both countries. Both systems are fucked in different ways. The NHS has a shittier service, but having to google up reviews for doctors as you're racing home with your injured child is a uniquely frustrating experience. Being fairly seriously injured and actively avoiding the doctor because you know you're going to get fucked over for 2-3k for just for the privilege of talking to a bored and uninterested GP and get a few scans that prove nothing. Being told you may have cancer, and your first thought is 'are these people trying to rip me off for the $500 a visit it costs until I hit my deductable'.

I agree, although the issue obviously is that it will always be open to the same liberals who are intent on ruining everything.

As a baseline non-natives should require health insurance, and non-contributing natives should recieve a massively reduced service. Anyone (not in their 80s and riddled with dementia) kicking off with staff should be dragged out of the hostpital immediately.

Our current situation isn't helped by enabling lazy behaviour, and neither are the people being enabled, but obviously the rug can't just be pulled overnight. Changes need to be made across the board too, it's not just the NHS.

And the general idea wouldn't be to not treat the tramps, but to limit their services, place them in cheaper, more basic wards, and fast track wait times for people who are working all week.

An 8 hour wait time is a completely different ball game to someone who's just finished a 10 hour shift and has to be up at 6 the next morning, compared to someone who's spent his week playing Fortnite and can get up at 11am the next day if he feels like it.
