The Clock Tower (and Haunting Ground) Series

I've completed the original Clock Tower's fan translation.

I wouldn't say it's one of my favorite point and click games. It was leagues above it's PS1 sequel though which used a lot of strange lapses in logic. Like the reveal of the villain especially.

I haven't played any of the subsequent games

It was shown in the PSX version of the original CT in the form of Dan's new body rising from the ashes of his cocoon, but that still doesn't change the botched logic in CT2.

Oh god. Jessica Harper was a goddess in that movie. A great shame she slowly disappeared from the screen.

I loved the lighting in Suspiria, personally, and I can see how the lighting had a real influence on the first CT game too. Shame about Jessica Harper though - I'm just glad Jennifer Connelly went on to do other things like Labyrinth.

I personally think the creepy doll room was also inspired by that movie, with all those well-dressed mannequins hanging out, waiting to dance...Connelly thankfully stayed on screen, for instance as Hulk's waif...Speaking of that, I was really unsure what to think of the budding romance between young Jennifer and Nolan. It honestly made me feel uncomfortable if anything.

It's endings G and H.

G has Jennifer escaping but dies later. H has Jennifer dead in the car.

Oh, you *beat* that game, not *translated* it. Sorry, wrong meaning for completed!

I've played an emulated version of the SNES game, plus the PSone sequel of that and 3. Haunting Ground, as well. I've seen other people play 2. It seems...kind of strange, but kind of fun in a way. My favorite is Haunting Ground but I loved the original and the PSone game. Horror is missing elements these days of what made the Clock Tower games so special.

As for Dario Argento's influence on Clock Tower, the first game especially plays out a lot like Phenomena, with a girl going to a new place to live and experiencing horrific events (though I think Jennifer from CT was an orphan, where Jennifer Corvino of Phenomena had a father). Clock Tower is what introduced me to Dario Argento years ago, so it has an extra special place in my heart.

Haunting Ground was recently released on PSN in Japan. Let's hope Capcom brings it outside of Japan though.

For me it was vice-versa. I learned about CT first and then found out about Phenomena, and it, too, has a very special place in my heart. Hell, I've even drawn fanart of Patua (the little deformed kid who inspired Bobby), I love it that much!

One thing to remember about Clock Tower is the main theme:
*It's just the first song that plays in this compilation
Even though I didn't play much of the game, this theme can be memorable.

I played the SNES one on an emulator and did get the third game. Over Halloween I ended up watching livestreams of the other games... Which saved me from The Struggle Within. I really liked the duel personality/ability idea and creepy doll girl, but the last boss ending I saw was pretty meh.

Three bugged me after I finished it and unlocked the outfits, they didn't carry over to the cutscenes. I wanted to be a cowgirl... (:_(

Apparently the Japanese version of Haunting Ground has English audio. I'm wondering if it's worth the trouble of buying it on Japanese PSN and just try to guess the what the text says. I know some minimal Japanese but you guys on the other hand might find it distracting.

Ah, but the currency exchange rate could be a hassle.

I used to have the original clock tower game on SNES and I used to stay up late at night playing it with my dad. I mean sure I had constant nightmares about a little dancing midget with gardening shears coming through my bedroom window and decapitating me, but damn those are some pretty fond memories.

I wish Haunting Ground would come to PSN. I loved that game. It's a survival horror gem.

Sadly, you'll be lucky if any copy on eBay is below $90. Ugh, I hate scammers.
I must be super lucky then. Someone traded in a copy in a small used game store I used to frequent. Snapped that sucker up as soon I saw it on the shelf. I think I only paid like $20 something or it.

How did you get a hold of it? It was never released outside of Japan.

It wasn't? I honestly have no idea where we got it. I think my dad might have mentioned that his friend got it for him somehow, but I was like 4 or 5 when we had it so I guess I just figured it was just some game he got at a video store or something. Come to think of it, I remember we also had this one scary movie that we got around the same time from the same friend that wasnt in english so I guess maybe we just knew someone who went on a lot of trips to different countries or something? I honestly never really thought to look into any of this stuff but it is pretty neat that we might have had some rare foreign game.
