The Elder Scrolls

Been playing a fair bit of Oblivion. I didn't really dig this game until I rolled a Battlemage, like I play in other games in the series. Now I may be chemically addicted.

Thinking of getting Morrowind. Had Oblivion for a while but I'm not use to its leveling system. From what I understand is, I shouldn't bother leveling up in vanilla Oblivion?

There's really two ways you can do it. You can bump the difficulty way down, which keeps things fair, or you can just not sleep (and therefore level) Since your skills are independent of your level, you can be a god and still be level one.

And I really recommend Morrowind. It's a bit dated, but still a great experience.

Just got Morrowind. What should I expect? I'm trying to unlearn everything that became a habit to me in Oblivion/Skyrim.

Being a crazy, right-wing shitlord I can appreciate Ulfric and wanting to preserve his cultural identity. And to everyone who say the Stormcloaks are racist, I ask this: Yeah, the Dunmer homeland blew up, that sucks, but why does Skyrim specifically have to house them? Did they sign some specific treaty? There is an whole continent out there; they don't have to just settle for the Gray Quarter.

As for the Argonians, well, they're just doing the jobs the Nords won't do. What's wrong with that?
Well, they ARE segregated and are given shitty wages for working in an environment that's probably not good for them.

Expect to miss sword strikes at point-blank range. Morrowind has really old-school, occasionally unforgiving mechanics.

And to get around that, invest in a main weapon skill. Like using a long sword or great sword? Invest in long blade skill. If that isn't enough, be sure to invest in agility as well since that can determine how often you can hit.

I thought the Civil War storyline was a great idea, but it was very one-dimensional. While it didn't explicitly say anyone was right or wrong, it made both look like assholes. The Stormcloaks are racist and the Imperials are under the control of the Thalmor anyway.

It would've made more sense if the Stormcloaks and the Imperials merged their armies for a Thalmor insurrection.
It would've been nice if you could've found a way to convince the two sides to put aside their differences and go after their common enemy: the Thalmor.

Personally, unless I'm RPing specifically one way or another, I choose the Empire if only because Skyrim might not be able to support itself yet and a united Empire stands a better chance of defeating the Thalmor than a divided one (and a divided one may leave Skyrim deprived of some supplies they can't get in their homeland.)

I think it's even mentioned that the Empire is at the moment biding their time and grinding up their axe for round two with the Thalmor - which considering that the Thalmor are running into internal problems apparently, will probably see an end to the white gold concordat.
I think I saw mention of that too, or at least found implications of it.

I think it should be mentioned that the Thalmor didn't set up shop and start dragging off Talos worshipers until after the Stormcloaks became vocal about Talos worship. Before then, the Empire was more than willing to look the other way.

Regardless of which side you're on, there's a nice little detail I've always liked. Nobody likes the Thalmor, not even the Empire. If you murder a Thalmor agent in front of a guard in an Imperial Hold they only give you a 40g bounty (which is, I think, for assault) instead of the usual for murder because, even though they despise the Thalmor, they have to charge you with something. In a Stormcloak Hold, you can kill one right in front of them and you don't even get a bounty. In fact, they might even help you. (An Imperial Hold guard will help, I think, if the Thalmor lands the first hit or if you used a spell to make them hostile, but I'm not completely sure.)

Been playing Daggerfall again, and am reminded why I adore this game. It has a freedom you just don't see much in games anymore. I love being able to just say fuck the main quest and become a full time vampire hunter or whatever.

I notice a strange bug in Morrowind where I cast a spell, nothing happens. My character just waves his hands and then nothing. Not even a fail message. I had to reload a save and there it is. Is this common?

Let's talk about Giants. Or more specifically, their relationship with the Nords culturally and historically. And with the Thu'um- their history, after all, is written in great long power-shouts.

Now, giant artwork makes heavy use of swirls. They use it on their bodies, the cattle offered to them, and on rocks. This swirl pattern is apparently their written language, as the Nords were once capable of using it (Consult the Seven Great Fights for more on this) to communicate with their "cousins". So, what? Giants use swirls, no big deal! There's more to this, though.

Now, we take a look at ancient Nordic structure, Dragon Cult and otherwise. Word Walls feature swirl patterns, as does Bromjunaar and the Dragon Priest shrine. Most notably, Bromjunaar's monument has these swirls coming from the "mouth". Obviously, one could take this to represent the Thu'um. This swirl-language, in Dragon Cult statuary, is inexorably linked with the power of Dragons and of the Thu'um.

Did the Giants not come to Tamriel from Atmora? Now, a hidden image after the Fifth Fight shows an Atmoran king as a giant (Note the seeker's head on the belt - a Miraak connection?) . Perhaps, this is why Ysgramor was seen as a dragon in lore, he is an Atmoran giant-Nord and thus wields the power of dragons as one of the Dragonborn- the Thu'um. Thus, men see him as a dragon rather than what he is.

So last week I decided to start playing skyrim again after abandoning it for months. Has anyone else had the displeasure of having your mannequins suddenly come to life and just fucking stare at you with their blank faces?

Not gonna comment on the maps, since pre-alpha and all, but those controls look awkward as all fuck.
